A manuscript book of poetry and recipes, Compiled by Miss Abigail Sarah Williams, 1786 This is something a little different – a 110 page, leather bound manuscript book, that was compiled by a Miss Abigail Sarah Williams, and dated Aug 12th 1786 on rear end paper.  Contained inside are initially a collection of poetry (titles such as ‘An American Tale’, ‘The Choice of a husband by a Lady’, and ‘Lines in praise of single life’).  There is foxing, as you would expect from a manuscript after more than 220 years. Perhaps of more interest than the collected poetry are the host of recipes that Miss Williams has noted:

Recipe for making milk punch

Recipe for the bite of a Viper

An infallible cure, if early applied against the tremendous consequences of the bite of a mad dog.

Method of preserving fruit of different kinds

A cure for consumption

Methods for pickling Walnuts/cucumbers/pork

Recipe for tooth powder

Method for cleaning silk, woollen and cotton goods

An invaluable recipe for the spitting of blood

Method for making Lavender water

Recipe for excellent mince pies

Method for making Ink

Recipe for a tooth powder

An infallible recipe to destroy bugs

Recipe for a Rhubarb draught

Recipe for the bile

Recipe for a paste for meat or fruit pies

A recipe for cure for piles

+ more

I have done a little research on Miss Williams, to find out just who she was.  I have managed to discover that she was christened on 1st October 1766 at Salt Lane Presbyterian, Salisbury, Wiltshire, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Williams.  She married on 27th July 1795 at Alverstoke, Hampshire to Alexander Morisson.

King James Bible, printed in 1637.

This was the family bible of the Drake family. Signatures and personal narrations appear on various pages. I purchased this bible, along with other items, during a visit to Gravesend in Kent, England.

The outer cover is in poor condition, but the pages are in quite good condition, considering it's age, which is in excess of 367 years.

The family names have not been written in an ordered manner at the front or back of the bible, but appear on various pages throughout. The names mentioned are as follows;

Ffrancis Drake                      Lydia Drake

Nathaniel Drake                     Richard Drake

Phillip Drake                         John Drake

Noah Nath Drake                    John Hakins

Thomas Billett  of Rowde          Edward Billett of Studly

John Tice

Jefferies Drake was born 24th September 1730.

From the I.G.I.  Jefferies Drake is shown as being the son of Francis and Sarah Drake of Rowde, Wiltshire, and baptised on the 24th September 1730.  Other family members are Sarah (b1737), Richard (b1738), Francis (b 1740), Nathaniell (b 1744), Phillip (b1746) and Abigail (b 1748).
