Interesting
manuscript letter to a Wiltshire clergyman dated August 2nd, 1798, making
extensive references to the rebellion then taking place in Ireland, as well
as referring to a highway robbery, written in a neat legible hand, 3pp 4to.
This extremely interesting letter provides a clue to English attitudes
towards the 1798 rebellion, which was caused by the growth of the Society of
United Irishmen and its aims of making the Irish parliament much more
representative of all religions. Frustration at the British Government's
refusal to increase Catholic representation, rebellion became inevitable, and
this was put down with severe violence. In this letter, the author, Mr D
Turner (possibly a clergyman) writes to his friend the Rev J Briggs of
Devizes, and comments: '...what dreadful work does the pride and ignorance of
mankind make in the world? Much to blame I believe on both sides, tho' much
the greatest on the severity of the ruling powers I believe and now they talk
of the rebellion being at an end - it may be so at present but unless very
wise ajust and benevolent measures are taken on the side of Government, and
more real knowledge , virtue and piety prevail among the people there will be
no settled permanent tranquility' - a truly prophetic letter! |

Manuscript order from Nicholas Devereux, Parliamentary Governor
at Malmesbury to Captain William More, dated May 21st, 1645, ordering him to
fortify his garrison at Bradenstoke, Malmesbury, written in a neat legible
hand and signed by Devereux to base, 195x110mm. An important historical
document which provides new evidence of the state of Malmesbury in the Civil
War. The site of Bradenstoke Priory is in Lyneham, Wilts, and known locally
as 'Clack'. Malmesbury changed hands several times in the early stages of the
Civil War but fell to Parliament under Edward Massey in May 1644, the last
change. Although it is known that troops were stationed there at this time,
the present document is the first known indication that Civil War defences
were proposed there. It remains to be established by archaeologists as to
whether the works were actually carried out. |

Hooter. A Petition by New Swindon inhabitants, to keep the Swindon Factory Whistle
blowing at 5.50 am every morning, dated 11/1/0 [1870?], names, occupations
and addresses of ninety-eight petitioners on four sheets with cover sheet
signed by R. Palleson and S. Carlton, sl. soiled, folio Originally fitted in
1864 the famous Great Western Railway 'hooter' summoned men to work as early
as 5.15 am and could be heard up to fifteen miles away. Henry St John, fifth
viscount Bolingbroke, at Lydiard House, famously tried to stop the hooter as
it interrupted his sleep and disturbed his pheasants. His first formal
complaints began in 1868 and on the basis of his weak heart the Hooter's
licence was revoked in July 1874, in spite of a petition signed by 4,339
persons wishing to keep the hooter. However, a protest meeting in the New
Year had Bolingbroke's decision overturned given the fact that Lord
Bolingbroke was the sole objector and only resided at Lydiard for two months
of the year. It is believed that each district mounted its own petition and
that therefore this petition for the town centre is a unique document. The
hooter sounded for the last time with the Works' closure in 1986. |

INDENTURE
RECORDING THE SALE OF A MESSUAGE AND FARM OF ALHALLOW GISSITH??, DORSET BETWEEN
THE PROVEST AND SCHOLARS OF QUEENS COLLEGE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD,
WARDEN OF THE HOSPITAL OF GODSHOUSE IN THE COUNTY OF SOUTHAMPTON, AND JAMES
ORENGE OF MARSTON BIGOT, SOMERSET, AND RICHARD FUNTON OF BUSHTON IN THE
PARISH OF CLEEVE PEPPER (CLYFFE PYPARD), WILTSHIRE, GENTLEMAN Dated 31st January in the 45th year of the
reign of Elizabeth I, 1603 Sale of a farm called Alhallow Gisseth in Dorset
and land called Bearwood alias Mannington. Handwritten in English on vellum.
The document has suffered from damp and mold growth with about a quarter of
the text on the right hand side affected.
The text is mostly discernable but some words have been lost, hence
not sure in which parish the farm is! With patience someone who knows the
area might be able to figure it out.
The vellum has been reinforced on the back in places. The document has
a nice red wax seal with armorial impression. |
