A Large indenture dated 1702 on vellum regarding property in Calne, Wiltshire.

An indenture dealing with the assignment of property in Calne, Wiltshire. The parties involved are ffmnamore? Brookes on the first part and Jacob Lewis and George Lewis on the other part. Further details about the persons involved are given. Essentially ffmnamore? Brookes has married Ann the daughter of George Lewis and in consideration of the considerable sum of money already received because of the wedding Mr. Brookes now assigns this property to George Lewis and Jacob Lewis. The property is a recently built cottage built on and next to 1 1/2 acres of land and an additional two plots of land totalling 5 acres, all in Monhill in the limits of the borough of Calne, Wiltshire. Some boundaries are described including Abbord Lane and near the Town Bridge. A field name is mentioned as well as the names of the past and present occupants. The document also notes a will made by William Durkett dated 1683. It goes on to give details of the legal obligations and requirements of the parties concerned

On one large sheet of vellum measuring 2 feet and 1/2 an inch by 1 foot 7 inches, the vellum is in very good condition with only slight wearing at the creases with a couple of tiny holes. Written in beautiful handwritten script throughout, most of the words are readable but in some cases the ink has deteriorated and those affected words are no longer visible. There are two signatures at the base with a further two marks on the reverse, but the vellum pendants and seals have been removed. There is excellent calligraphy around the 'T' of words This Indenture at the top of the document. On the left hand side there are also 2 impressed six pence stamps and one ink stamp.

On one piece of vellum measuring 10 and a 1/2 inches by 4 and a 1/4 inches in excellent condition especially considering its age. There is one small hole in the vellum. Written in Latin in beautiful handwritten script with almost complete seal attached. The seal measuring just over an inch across shows a double headed eagle with words arround the side. This is an extremely old and rare document from the time of Oliver Cromwell. Following the English Civil War, and execution of Charles I, Cromwell became Lord Protector and England was known as the 'Commonwealth'. Effectively a republic. The document reads' This Indenture made this ffourteenth day of (possibly) December in the Year of the Lord God One Thousand Six Hundred and Fifity.Four. The document appears to be on animal skin due to the texture. This is an very nice document and, bearing in mind it is over 350 years old, is in very good condition. There are however a few very smallholes where the document has been folded and a tear about 2 inches long, again along a crease mark. But ifthis was mounted these flaws would not be visibile.Measurements 55cm and 25cm Names include Nicholas Aldridge the Elder and Nicholas Aldridge the Younger in the County of Wilts
