This is
the apprenticeship indenture of Benjamin Page "a poor boy of the parish
of Buxted in the County of Sussex" to Samuel Nye of Tonbridge in the
county of Kent, Holloware Turner, from the twenty-fifth of December 1807 for
the term of seven years. It states that a consideration of £10 was paid by
the Trustees of a public charity for this purpose set up by Anthony Saunders
D.D. deceased, with a further £5 to be paid at the end of the apprenticeship.
The parties have signed it and there are two wax seals and a duty stamp for
15s. Oddly, it seems to have been signed in 1810, three years into the term
of the apprenticeship. The seals have cracks but appear to be intact. On the
back is a note that it was signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of
Rd. A. Turner, Lewes. (Presumably Rd. is an alternative form of Rev.?) It is
approximately 19.5 cm by 21 cm, and was created by writing the details of the
transaction on to a form printed on what appears to be parchment. It has a
certain amount of soiling which suggests that perhaps it was kept in the
pocket of a coat or some such place. However it is in reasonable condition for
its age and nature. One quarter of the back of the document, which would have
been on the outside when it was folded, is more soiled than the rest. |

here is an 1879 mortgage taken out by local plasterer William Hookham on
these 2 'newly erected messuages tenements or dwelling houses'. The document records that he increased the
mortgage in 1880, and that the mortgage was paid off in 1897. Lengthy document in manuscript on
parchment, nice and clean. (ref 3002) |

Property Deeds for Cottage in A short

property is described as ‘all that messuage now or heretofore divided into
two tenements....adjoining to the...North to the Church Field....on the South
to the King’s Highway...’. Very much the concern of the Souter family, one of
whom bore the distinctive christian name Meshezabell. 4 parchment deeds and

Tree Cottage was sold at least 8 times between 1919 and 1939 during which
time its value rose from £70 to £1000. 2 of the 8 conveyances contain hand drawn
