1870 VELLUM INDENTURE concerning RAILWAYS with a LARGE COLORED PLAT NO RESERVE This is an excellent vellum indenture, handwritten on 5 sides of vellum in a vertical format. It is dated 12th August 1870 and is between Elizabeth Wilmot Whatley of Hartfield, Sussex of the one part and the London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company of the other part. It seems that Elizabeth had discussed with the Surrey & Sussex Junction Railway Company the sale of some land but they were not able to agree on a purchase price and compensation. Later, the Surrey & Sussex amalgamated with the London Brighton & South Coast Railway and now £992.10.0 is to be paid by the company for some land in the parish of Cowden, Kent measuring about 7 acres. There is a whole page hand coloured PLAN or PLAT of the land in question. There is also a schedule of the land concerned; a blue revenue stamp and one red wax seal. In addition to the document, the buyer of this lot will also receive 5 separate coloured plans of the same area in sizes varying from 9" x 6" to 18" x 9". This document is related to 2 others also being offered at the same time but separately. Size. The document is approx. 12" wide x 18.5" high. Condition. In superb condition with the usual folding creases.

This is the apprenticeship indenture of Benjamin Page "a poor boy of the parish of Buxted in the County of Sussex" to Samuel Nye of Tonbridge in the county of Kent, Holloware Turner, from the twenty-fifth of December 1807 for the term of seven years. It states that a consideration of £10 was paid by the Trustees of a public charity for this purpose set up by Anthony Saunders D.D. deceased, with a further £5 to be paid at the end of the apprenticeship. The parties have signed it and there are two wax seals and a duty stamp for 15s. Oddly, it seems to have been signed in 1810, three years into the term of the apprenticeship. The seals have cracks but appear to be intact. On the back is a note that it was signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Rd. A. Turner, Lewes. (Presumably Rd. is an alternative form of Rev.?) It is approximately 19.5 cm by 21 cm, and was created by writing the details of the transaction on to a form printed on what appears to be parchment. It has a certain amount of soiling which suggests that perhaps it was kept in the pocket of a coat or some such place. However it is in reasonable condition for its age and nature. One quarter of the back of the document, which would have been on the outside when it was folded, is more soiled than the rest.
