The Wilfred Blunt Archive. Important archive of
papers, 1869-1922, relating to the poet, adventurer, associate of the
pre-Raphaelites and founder of modern anti- colonialism, Sir Wilfred Blunt,
of Worth, Sussex, as well as his wife Lady Anne, the granddaughter of Byron,
and their world famous Arabian horse racing stud at Crabbet Park (near to
modern day Gatwick Airport), including a copy of Blunt's original marriage
settlement, mentioning Byron's daughter, Augusta Ada, various copies of
Blunt's will and codicils to it, most signed by Blunt, legal papers relating
to the Crabbet Park Arabian Stud, a copy of Lady Anne's will, an indenture
involving the Rev. Augustus Byron, papers relating to the High Court lawsuit
Blunt took out against his daughter, Lady Wentworth, sundry legal papers,
letters etc. A fascinating archive which will doubtless shed new light on one
of the most colourful characters in late Victorian England, as well as
providing new information on the immediate descendents of Lord Byron. Blunt,
(1840-1922) famed for his Victorian love sonnets, was also a leading diplomat
of his day, a seasoned traveller and adventurer, particularly in Egypt and
Arabia, revered by his fellow poets, such as W B Yeats, and also a close
associate of the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood - so close in fact that he had a
torrid love affair with one of their most famous models, Jane Burden. He
married Byron's granddaughter in 1870, and together they developed one of the
most famous Arabian Racehorse studs of all time - the Crabbet Park Stud.
Indeed the name 'Crabbet' is today a byword for quality Arabian bloodstock.
Sadly his daughter did not take any interest in the stud and it was quickly
disbanded on his death. He hated the concept of the |

Edward Arthur Maund of Storrington, Sussex, to be a tutor and guide to two
Worcester children, William and Edward Wall, on the grand tour of France,
Germany, Switzerland and Italy, written in a neat secretarial hand, and
signed by the boy's guardian Thomas Baneby, 3pp, folio. The Grand Tour was
designed to provide young people with a grounding in education by touring
various places throughout Europe so that they could see places of classical,
artistic and historical interest first hand. Paris and Rome were always on
the tour as were the ruins of Pompei. |

Farm and Rectory Cottages (and East Lodge) Shermanbury. as delineated on the
plan annexed and coloured yellow dated 7th September 1923. Purchase price
£3,953-00.The southern boundary of the property is formed by the River Adur.

Sussex between Cowfield and Henfield, north of Brighton. The Indenture
incorporates a schedule of the various fields and properties included within

residents of Shermanbury and nearby villages. Lt-Colonel McKergow of the
Sussex Yeomanry was Officer in Command of the 4/4th Battalion Queens Own
Royal West Kent Regiment from 1st January 1917 until disbanded in 1919. I
believe that a biography of ‘Sussex Squire’ Bob McKergow was written a couple
of years ago. The Indenture bears a £40 orange Revenue Stamp. Deed measures
approx 9 inches x 12 inches (say 23cms x 31 cms) |

Two
items, acquired simultaneously from the same source and most probably (but not
certainly) relating to the same Wheelwrights shop and premises owned by the
apparently long term Henfield residents the ‘Martin’ family. Surely the last
Wheelwrights of Henfield. Henfield is between Brighton and Horsham near
Cowfold, Hurstpierpoint etc. Of particular local history interest to present
and former residents of Henfield, flint wall enthusiasts! ,and those
interested in Wheelwrights generally. These are interesting evocative items
which could benefit from research. 1)
Handwritten letter headed ‘Memorandum’ dated 27th May 1840. Paper bears an
ornate fleur-de-lis watermark and with the words (HA?) RRIS &TREMLETT
1837 also present in watermark alongside. The letter is signed by William
Borrer of Henfield in the County of Sussex Esquire and John Martin of the
same place Wheelwright, and reads (extract only) ……..’do hereby declare that
the Brickwall which the undersigned William Borrer has at his own expense
erected on the West Side of his Yard and Premises forming the East boundary
of the undersigned John Martin’s House Yard and premises and also the Flint
Wall which the undersigned William Borrer has also at his own expense erected
at the North end of his garden and premises forming the South boundary of the
undersigned John Martin’s yard and premises and……..etc. etc.’ Each page of
this letter measures approx 12 inches x 7.5 inches and the letter almost
fills three pages with the fourth side bearing the date and a brief
description of the document. The letter is signed by William Borrer and John
Martin and witnessed by Dawson Borrer. Item is in remarkably good condition
with just a couple of pinholes and a few minor marks and Solicitors
pencilling etc. 2)
Conveyance dated 30th July 1904 between ‘Thomas Knight of Eastbourne in the
County of Sussex Ironmonger, Samuel Denman Of Brighton in the County of
Sussex Architect (the vendors)(acting for the estate of Elizabeth Williams
Martin widow deceased) of the one part and John Eardley Hall of Barrow Hill
Henfield in the County of Sussex (..purchaser) of the other part….’ Relates
to the sale of ‘All that House Wheelwrights and Carpenters Shop Buildings
Yard and premises situate at the Southern end of the High Street in the
parish of Henfield and having a frontage to such street of one hundred and
thirty three feet six inches or therabouts as the same premises are more
particularly delineated in the plan drawn on these presents and therein
coloured pink and all mines and minerals down to two hundred feet from the
surface of the ground’. The Sale price of this property very nearly 100 years
ago was £700. Document is folded to give four pages measuring approx 15
inches x 10 inches (say 38 cms x 26 cms) and is in good condition. Over time
the ink has faded to a sepia colouration but is still quite legible (see scan).
The Conveyance bears a blue £3-10s adhesive Duty stamp overembossed with a
orange revenue stamp dated 3rd August 1904 and is generally in good
condition. |

Two old
Title Documents relating to then proposed development on the site of West
Broyle Farm Chichester to be known as ‘Parklands Estate’, both documents
incorporate substantial maps of land included in the title. 1)
Agreement dated 11th November 1935 between Henry Percy Brazier of Woodside,
Bulkington Avenue, Worthing in Sussex Gentleman and Marine Park Estate
(Worthing) Limited ..of 10 Shelley Road Worthing..at a price of £20,000-00.
Relates to ‘all those pieces or parcels of land with the cottage farm buildings
and hereditaments thereto belonging situate in the City of Chichester and in
the Ecclesastical Parishes of Saint Peter the Great otherwise Subdeanery
Saint Bartholomew and New Fishbourne in the County of Sussex as the same with
abuttals and boundaries thereof are more particularly delineated and
described in the plan annexed hereto and therein edged pink together with a
right of way for all purposes in common with the said Richard Iltid Henty as
his successors in title …along that portion of the road known as Salt Hill
Lane coloured brown on the said plan and ..the new road known as Parklands
Road..’ etc, etc. This
parchment Deed comprises 4 sides of narrative measuring approx. 24cms x 36cms
(Say 9.5 ins x 15 ins) plus cover and a substantial Plan/Map measuring approx
47cms x 37cms (Say 19 ins x 15 ins) coloured blue green pink and brown.(see
scan) The Deed bears the winessed signature of Mr H P Brazier together with
the witnessed seal of Marine Park Estates and a separate receipting by Mr
Brazier for the £20,000. 2)
Assignment dated 17th November 1937 between Marine Park Estate (Worthing)
Limited in liquidation and Ernest Edwin Cane (liquidator) to Parklands Estate
(Chichester) Limited. This parchment document is the same dimensions as the
1935 deed, extends to three sides of narrative and cover plus a substantial
Plan/Map headed ‘Parkland Estate Chichester Plan No.2’. The Map is more
detailed than the 1935 Map and shows how the estate had developed in the
previous two years. The Map has a scale which shows the land in question
measures approx. 2,500 feet x 3,000 feet (say 800 metres x 1000 metres).
Various Fields and Boundaries are shown together with dimensions in Acres,
the Southern Railway Chichester and Midhurst Line and the partly developed
roads Beech Avenue, Parklands Road, Cedar Drive, Walnut Avenue and Salthill
Lane. The Map is coloured blue with red outlining.(see scan) The Deed bears
the Company Seals of Marine Park Estates and Parklands Estate and the
witnessed signature of Mr E E Cane. The
documents are in very good condition with just a few insignificant marks,
solicitors’ pencillings etc. In common with other indenture conveyance
documents etc. the deeds have been folded ‘in four’, to give folded
dimensions of approx. 9 cms. x 24 cms. ( say 4 inches x 9.5 inches). Both
documents were prepared by Messrs Charles, Malcolm. Wilson, Solicitors of
Worthing. The
land covered by these deeds has subsequently been developed into the proposed
Parklands Estate the early stage of which are revealed by the Maps. Sherborne
Road, Flaxman Avenue Neville Road, Oliver Whitby Road, Barton Road, Hilary
Road, Sherlock Avenue, Hannah Square, Langton Road, Wilson Close, Ashburnham
Close, Oak Avenue, Oak Close etc. etc. are largely just fields. |
