1730 "An Act for the more effectual repairing the Road leading from Godstone in the County of Surrey, to Highgate, at the Entrance into Ashdown Forrest in the Parish of East Grinsted, in the County of Sussex" "Whereas by an Act...several Tolls, Duties, Powers and authorities were given...And whereas it is necessary some further Provision should be made for raising Money towards the Repairing the Road, leading from the white-Hart Inn in Godstone Town or Street...to Highgate, at the Entrance into Ashdown Forrest...for amending and repairing the Roads, leading from the Stones End in the Borough of Southwark, to Highgate..." 1736 "An Act for explaing, and amending, and making more effectual several Acts of Parliament made in the Fourth, Sixth, and Tenth Years of the Reign of his late Majesty King George the first, respectively, for repairing the several Roads theren mentioned in the Counties of Surrey, Kent, and Sussex; and for enlarging the Terms and Powers by the said Acts granted; and for repairing the Road lying between Nonesuch and Worcester Parks, in the Parish of Cuddington, in the said County of Surrey" This document cites several previous Acts and extends the term for 25 years.  It names the Trustees.  "...and whereas the Trustees...borrow of several Persons, several Sums of Money, amounting together to the principal Sum of Six thousand seven hundred and fifty Pounds, part of the Nine thousand Pounds, which they were impowered to raise by the said Act...", "that an effectual Provision may be made for repairing and amending the said Roads; and also the Road between Nonesuch and Worcester Parks, in the Parish of Cuddington, in the said County of Surrey...".  "And be it fruther enacted...to the repairing and amending the Road from the said Town of Croydon to highgate aforesaid, or any Part thereof...in repairing and amending the said Road from the said Town of Croydon to the White Hart Inn in Godstone Town or Street in the County of Surrey..."  The Tolls are listed for each type of vehicle.  "Provided always, That no turnpike shall be erected or set up by virtue of this Act...between the East End of the Lane called Manningate-Lane, near the Town of Kingston and Burton Common in the said County of Surrey", "...That nothing in this Act contained shall diminish, lessen, or take away, or be deemed to diminish, lessen, or take, the annual Sum of One hundred and fifty Pounds...is directed to be paid for repairing and amending the Highways or Roads leading from Westminister Ferry, in the Parish of Lambeth, in the County of Surrey, unto New Cross, in the Parish of Deptford...", etc.  Other roads and places mentioned in this Act include: Vauxhall Bridge, Stockwell, Bristow Causey Common, Ashdown Forest, East Grinstead, Blackheath, Lewisham, Woodhatch, Sidlow Mill, Horsehills Lane, Bonehurst alias Boners Lane, Peteridge Lane, Horley, Sidlow Hill, etc.  First meeting of the Trustees to take place "at the Sign of the Bull Head in the Parish of Ewell..." 15 pages of original document which has been disbound from a larger volume.

1737 "An Act to impower the present Trustees under the last Will and Testament of John Marshall Gentleman, deceased, to lay out a certan Sum of Money, now in their Hands, for pulling-down and rebuilding the Parish-Church of Christ-Church in the County of Surrey, and for enclosing a Piece of ground lately purchased, for any additional ChurchYard to the said Church"

 

"Whereas John Marshall Gentleman, deceased, did by his last Will and Testament... [1627] ...should thereout raise Seven hundred Pounds, and therewith build a new Church, and purchase a convenient Church-Yard; and directed, That the Charges of procuring an Act of Parliament, or the Royal Licence, or what else necessary for the better effecting thereof, should be defrayed out of the Rents, Issues, and Profits of the said Lands; and that his said Trustees, and their Heirs, should, after Consecration thereof, provide a Minister, to be placed in the said Church from time to time...", "...raised the said Seven hundred Pound out of the Profits of his said Lands, did, in the Year One thousand six hundred and seventy, lay out the same in building a Church on Part of the Lordship, Manor, or Liberty, called Paris-Garden (then Part of the Parish of St. Saviour's Southwark...", "...but the Church not being then compleatly finished (having neither Steeple nor Bells) and the Rents of the Testator's Estate being so much fallen, that the Trustees were not in any Probability like to raise a Fund to purchase Lands and Tenements of Sixty Pounds a Year, for the endowment of the said Church...", "...since when, by Reason of the falling of Rents, empty Houses, and the Poverty of the Inhabitants of the said Parish...", "...a Piece of Ground near to the Church-yard of the said Church, which was much wanted for the Burial of the Dead: aAnd whereas the said Trustees have, by laying out the yearly Produce of the said Trust-Estate from time to tiem at Interest, and by Sale of Stock in the Year One thousand sevend hundred and twenty, greatly improved the same, and have now in their Hands the Surplus Sum of about Two thousand five hundred Pounds; and the said Church (of which the said John Marshall was the founder) is now in a very ruinous Condition, and not capable of being repaired, and the Church-yard so very small, that it is scarce sufficient to receive the Dead...rebuilding the said Church, and in making an additional Church-yard thereto...", etc.

A 2 page vellum indenture dated 7th August 1878 between John Chappell and George Chappell both of Walton on the Hill (builders) and Thomas Rigby of Litherland (gent.) relating to property in Anfield Road and Lothair Road, Walton on the Hill.  It has two seals and signatures with revenue stamps.  There are receipt and witness signatures on the reverse.  On the reverse is a second indenture dated 1890 with seal and signature.  Also there is a document dated 8th August 1878 (in triplicate) pinned to it.  Has been folded, otherwise excellent condition.

An attractive Elizabethan vellum document being a feoffment relating to the sale of lands in Southwark, London, between Sir Thomas Kempe of Olantigh or Ollantigh in the parish of Wye, Kent, Knight, and John Mabbe of London. Dated 10th April in the 7th year of the reign of Elizabeth I [1565]. Substantial part of a red wax seal showing the Kempe family arms. Property: All that messuage, stables, cellar, gardens, etc, called le Tabbard in the parish of St Margarets in Southwark or St Salvatorio commonly known as St Saviours alias St Mary Overy, Southwark. In the tenure or occupation of William Butter of Southwark. Medium: Handwritten in Latin on vellum. Condition: Heavy creasing, patchy stains and several small holes. One large slit in vellum near seal tag repaired. All text is readable. Seal has about one third missing, but impression of arms is intact. Document size: 52 by 38 cm.

A 4 page paper copy indenture recording the bargain and sale of many houses and lands in Thorpe and Westleigh, Surrey, between Wolley Leigh of Thorpe, and James Beerblock of Thorpe. Original indenture Dated the 30th day of March in the 11th year of the reign of Charles I [1634]. This is a copy of the original indenture. The copy is undated, but the watermark places the age of the paper from early 1700's onwards. Property: All that one croft called Bapptill, one messuage and parcel of land lying in Westleigh, one messauge called Bookhams in Leehole, further messuages called Eggleshurst, Whitewoods, South Grove, and many more in Thorpe. This is a large two page genuine indenture dated 1742 on vellum. The agreement is between Thomas Woodford of Ottershaw, Parish of Chorsay (?), Surrey AND Mr Nisbett (Gent.) of Carshalton, only son and heir of Andrew Nisbett and Sarah his wife. I have not read the indenture so I have no idea what it is about. It is beautifully and clearly written in large script. It has six bleu duty labels and two other stuck on stamps. There is also a red wax seal signed by Thomas Woodford. The indenture is in good condition with no tears, although along some of the fold creases the text has become a little indistinct. It measures 66cm x 67 cm.
