Handwritten English vellum indenture dated 1744 during the reign of King George II, bearing a printed vignette incorporating a portrait of the King. The indenture involves the conveyance of large land holdings including in Stafford between William Moore of Polesdon in Surry, Esquire, of the one part; and Lawrence Cottam, a Gentleman, of Middlesex, of the other part. Three blue revenues with tax stamp and beautifully penned on two sheets of vellum, red wax seal with bust of a man on green cloth tag. ADDITIONALLY, a further agreement is penned on the verso of one of the leaves and dated 1748 with three revenue stamps, tax stamp, and red wax seal with different bust impression. Quite interesting measuring 29 x 26". Very Good with some discoloration near vignette and creasing at fold points.

Indenture. 16 July 1796. Release of a parcel of land in the parish of Streatham. George III document relating to property that is now in a well-known part of greater London. Release of a parcel of land in the parish of Streatham for the sum of £525 by William and Elizabeth Esdaile to William Cotton. William Esdaile Esquire of Lombard Street in the City of London and Elizabeth, his wife. William Cotton Esquire of Laurence Pountney Lane, London. The parcel of land was of about 3 acres, and bordered on Dragmore Lane between Clapham and Streatham. The sum of £525 was paid for this land. A map is included on the first sheet of the document, describing the size and location of the plot of land. A modern map of London does not show Dragmore Lane, but it should be possible to identify its location from a nineteenth century Ordnance Survey map. Documents is on two sheets of parchment, of approx. 28" x 23",  Two Blue Sterling Seals on each of the sheets, - one for 1 shilling and 6 pence and the other for 1 shilling on front of sheet, with two white GR stamps on reverse of Sterling Seals. (one of these GR stamps is damaged). Seals of William Esdaile and Elizabeth Esdaile at bottom of document. The document is in good condition, although there is one pencilled-in annotation on one of the sheets. As would be expected, the document has remained folded for a very long period of time and is creased where the fold marks are found.

Indenture. 9 June 1795.   Release of a Parcel of Land. Release of a parcel of land for the sum of £6300, between George Eyre and William Esdaile. Those named include George Eyre of Clapham in the County of Surrey, only son and heir of Charles Eyre (deceased) of Clapham. William Esdaile of Lombard Street in the City of London, Esquire. The release of land and hereditaments as executed and attested in the last will and testament of Charles Eyre. These include several parcels of land between Clapham Common and Streatham Common, and include part of a farm known as Balaam Hill (Balham Hill ?). The document is particularly interesting in that the "land and hereditaments" described are nowadays in a very busy part of London. Document consists of two pages, each approx 27" x 23" written on parchment. One Shilling and Six Pence Sterling Seal on each page of document, with black-and-white GR stamp on reverse. Signatures of George Eyre, with his seal, on the bottom of the document. The seal appears to be a portrait seal. One of the interesting features in the document is the reference to George III as being Sovereign of "Great Britain, France, and Ireland". It is also worth noting that the sum of £6300 for land would have been a considerable sum of money in 1795. The document is in good condition. See also item 329.

A later addition raises the sum to one hundred and eighty five pounds and sixteen shillings. Naughty boy. The document is part printed and part hand written on paper and unfolded measures approx 16 x 13 inches. There is a wax seal bearing what I assume is the coat of arms of Sir Francis. Sir Francis Vincent is mentioned in the published diary of William Bray , moving in the same social circles as David Garrick and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Surrender of Copyhold.   26 February 1885.   Oak Lodge, Bishopstoke, - County of Southampton. (Some additional, and larger size, images of this document can be viewed on http://www.enicholl.com/parchments/document-023/index.htm. ) Covenant, Indenture. 26 February 1885. Covenant for surrender and release of the Copyhold of the Mansion House and hereditaments known as Oak Lodge, Bishopstoke, in the County of Southampton. Those mentioned include;-
Henry Thomas Twynam of 32 Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, - Solicitor
William Stedman Gillett, of Harefield Bittern, Southampton, - Esquire
Arthur Woodall Gillett, of the Marine Society's Training Ship "Warspite", - Captain R N
William John Gillett, of 39 Woburn Square in the County of Middlesex, - Esquire
The Revd Hugh Hodgson Gillett, of Compton Guildford in the County of Surrey, - Clerk (in Holy Orders)
Eliza Twynam, of 18 Blandford Square in the County of Middlesex, - Widow

A complex document regarding the sale of several parcels of property and land which had previously been rented, with the income from the rent going to Eliza Twynam. The various parcels of property and land were to be transferred to William Stedman Gillett for the sum of £12,319 / 7s / 6d. The document describes the property as per an attached schedule and the detailed coloured map. The principal property identified on the map is Oak Lodge, but roads and directions are marked such that the property and land can probably be identified with the modern area of Bishopstoke. The map is very detailed, and is bound to be of interest to a modern day local historian. Document is in three sheets, each approx 27 1/2" x 22 1/2". The document is in good condition, though because it is in three sheets and the sheets have been kept folded over many years there is some noticeable creasing. On the first page ("This Indenture") this has led to some loss of legibility. On the second page there is some staining, though not to a serious degree. There are two seals with signatures on the document, - those of Henry T and Eliza Tywnam. The title page carries two red sterling silver stamps for ten shillings each, with two black-and-white VR stamps on the reverse.

Lease for 21 Years of No 5B Grand Parade, Gaskarth Road, Balham Hill in the County of Surrey by Mr Arthur Batley to Mr George Phillips (Nowadays, Gaskarth Road is off Balham Hill in London SW12)  Mr Arthur Henry Batley of "Mayfield", Harewood Road, Croydon, County of Surrey, - Builder. Mr George Phillips of 72 Chalk Farm Road, County of Middlesex, - Fruiterer and Greengrocer For the sum of £65 per year to be paid in 4 quarterly instalments on the 25th day March, 24th day of June, 29th day of September, and 25th day of December....... The Document is on one sheet of parchment, of approx. 28" x 22" Red Sterling Seal for 7 shillings and sixpence on front of sheet, with white VR stamp on reverse of Sterling Seal. Seal of Arthur Henry Batley at bottom of document. Good condition.
The document is particularly interesting in that it lists a number of conditions for the rental of the premises, including painting the exterior every three years and cleaning and pointing the exterior brickwork every
seven years. It is also rather sad in that George Phillips surrendered the lease on 2 July 1895, - only 5 months later, and this event is recorded in the bottom right corner of the document.
