Original Vellum Document dated 17th April 1716 Between Jekyll Catesby and his wife Elizabeth & Arthur Brewster and his wife Elizabeth Dated 17th April 1716 in the 2nd year of the reign of King George (1st) in the Parish of St Peter in Sudbury, Suffolk. This really is a fantastic piece of history. Hand written on thick vellum, the document measures about 30" by 26". It is signed and witnessed on both sides and includes the wax seals of Jekyll Catesby and his wife, Elizabeth. I have to admit that it is heavy going to read but it is to do with the transferring of possession of various premises in Sudbury. These include an Inn and Malthouse called the White Horse amongst other buildings in the parish of St Peter. There are several people mentioned in the text and I am sure it would be of great interest to anyone doing family history research in the Sudbury area. Some of those mentioned are;

Henry Somerset Baker
John Cooke
Bernard Carter (the White Horse)
Thomas Kemp a merchant tailor
Christopher Pettent
Henry Green
William Grimwood
John Catesby (Gentleman) and late father of Jekyll Catesby
Mark Catesby
Peter Senzell
Robert Bennett.........and many more.
The sum of money involved is £375 which is receipted on the back and witnessed by George Gent and what looks like "R Cole". There is a revenue seal on the left of the document with a silvery metal inset which reads "VI" for 6 pence. The back of this inset is covered with a cut out monogram of George I. The two wax seals of Jekyll and Elizabeth Catesby are at the base of the document, beneath their signatures. Obviously because of it's great age there is some wear and tear, but really very little. The vellum is pretty thick and has clearly withstood the test of time well. Some brown staining occurs both front and back but this is shown on the images provided.

The premises in question are on North Street, Sudbury in the parish of St. Peter and include barned stables, maltings, gardens, orchards etc. The document is linked to another Indenture that I am selling on ebay at present, which was made on the 17th April 1716. Last Will & Testament of John Addeson, Clothier, of Sudbury, Suffolk A very interesting document indeed. This is the Will of John Addeson who must have been dying when the will was written (or very unfortunate) as he was dead within a few weeks of the date of the Will. Mr Addeson leaves his possessions in the care of his brother Thomas Addeson and his capital to his wife and children. It refers to his properties in the parish of St. Peter in Sudbury, these being outhouses, maltings, cisterns, barns, stables, gardens etc. At the end of the Will is the addition that the Will was Proved in April 1755 after John's death before the oathes of his brother and widow. There are several signatures at the bottom of the document and 10 embossed stamps pressed into the paper, each being for the value of one shilling. At the top of the document it reads, "Extracted from the Registry of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury".  There is some staining on the back sheet, page 4, and there is general wear and marking to the document. It is, however, fully intact and a very interesting piece of social history.
