Hearth Tax. An original receipt in the name of Martin Day of Eye (Suffolk?), 16 August 1689, printed template with manuscript additions, some minor wear, without loss, approx. 10 x 10 cm. Tho: Bayley was the collector. I have saved a copy of the image.

The Hearth Tax consisted of a half-yearly payment of one shilling for each hearth in the occupation of every person whose house was worth more than 20s per year, and who was a local ratepayer of church and poor rates. It was introduced at a time of serious financial emergency by Charles II as a temporary measure.
