Suffolk. Grant by Sir William Phelipp, John Barney and others of the manor of “Cokefeldhalle”, Yoxford to John Manning, manuscript on vellum, in Latin, folds, 4 wax seals (remarkably fine and clear impressions), witnessed by Simon Felbrigg, John Heveningham, John Fastolf and others, 172 x 275mm., a fine example, 21st July 1428.
Sir John Fastolf (1378?-1459), soldier and landowner. “Fastolf distinguished himself at the battle of Agincourt, in the raid on Rouen, in the relief of Harfleur when besieged by the constable of France, at the taking of Caen, and at the siege of Rouen in 1417. During the season of Lent 1429 Fastolf performed his chief exploit. Orleans was under siege by the English, and their camp was in great need of provisions. Fastolf was directed to bring in supplies. He reached Paris safely, and returned with the necessary stores, but when approaching the camp outside Orleans was attacked at Rouvray by a French army under the Comte de Clermont far exceeding his own in number. His victory was, however, complete. For purposes of defence he used the barrels of herrings which he was convoying, whence the battle obtained its popular name, ‘the battle of the Herrings.’” - DNB.

Royal Indenture from 1691. It is a lease agreement made in June 1691 for an area known as Goosewood in Suffolk, which I think now maybe Groton Wood. I believe it is Queen Catherine's copy of the indenture as it has 'Catherina R' written at the top.

Other names included in the agreement are:
'Lawrence Earle of Rochester' - Laurence Hyde, 1st Earl of Rochester (1641 – 1711);
'Lewis Earle of Feversham' - Louis de Duras, 2nd Earl of Feversham (1641-1709);
'Thomas Earle of Fauconberge' - Thomas Belasyse, 1st Earl Fauconberg (1627-1700);
Henry Frederick Thinn Esq - Clerk of the Privy Council (?-1705).
Other names include Peter Venables, Ben Major, John Romson and several others I just can't make out

The size is approximately 70cm wide by 60cm long. Condition is poor - some of the ink is missing, although the impression of the words is still there. The whole indenture is grubby with dirt and stains, and there are a couple of wear wholes where it has been folded and stored.
From the images another of the witnesses was Thomas Ryceater. The document also mentions William Busby and possibly Margarett Busby

1746 Vellum Court Document, Wickham Market and Parham Hacheston, Suffolk. Location: Two houses with gardens and lands in Wickham Market and Parham Hacheston in Suffolk. Persons Involved:  Susan Wynthingham (plantiff) and John Hurnard and Elizabeth his wife (defendant).

Contents: This document is a final agreement in which a transfer of property is taking place at court. Courts were only allowed to deal with cases and not with land transfer agreements directly. Thus these documents record a fictitious case whereby the plaintiff i.e. the purchaser of the property takes the vendor (the person who owns the property) i.e. the defendant to court. The court finds in favour of the plaintiff but awards the defendant compensation i.e. the sale price that the plaintiff must pay. However the amount recorded in such cases is normally as fictitious as the cases themselves.

Cases of this type were undertaken normally in addition to the transfer of property through deeds in order to make sure everything was legal and above board. In addition court documents were held more securely which would be needed in any problems arose in the future. Documents of this type ceased to be used after the reform Act of 1831.

Document: On vellum it remains in excellent condition. Written in English the words are clear and legible throughout. A single leaf it measures approximately 22 inches by 5 ½ inches. Indented on two sides, it would have originally been joined to two other copies. Markings have been put along the indents so that if the different copies were ever put back together, authenticity could be proven, as both indents and markings would need to match. One of the copies would have been held by the court with the other two been given to the purchaser and vendor respectively. This documents is one of the copies given to either the purchaser or vendor. There are no seals or signatures as this is a court document.

Group of indentures on vellum, 17th century, of which 5 from the reign of Charles I (1625-49), 4 from the Interregnum (1649-60) and 6 from the reign of Charles II (1660-85), many involving transactions in Suffolk (Wickham Skeith and elsewhere), but also Worcestershire (Bredon: 2 deeds thus), Cornwall (Saltash), Kent, and Yorkshire, generally in very good condition, many with red wax seals extant, approximate dimensions 45 x 65 cm and smaller, together with 8 other documents (nearly all 17th century, 7 on vellum, 1 on paper)

(Quantity: 23)

One of the indentures is a deed of feoffment involving royalist cavalry officer Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Cleveland (1591-1667) and one Thomas Cleere of Ipswich, signed twice by Cleveland and dated 24 November 1628. Cleveland's 'relative posthumous obscurity belies the positive impression that he made on a number of contemporaries' (ODNB). His extravagant lifestyle led him deeply into debt, and during the Long Parliament he submitted an unsuccessful private bill which would have allowed him to sell some of his lands; only after the Restoration did he obtain permission to sell certain lands for the benefit of his creditors.

POLE, William de la, 1st Duke of Suffolk (1396-1450). Document signed ('Suffolk'), an indenture recording the resolution of a dispute relating to the manor of Sproughton, n.p., 19 May 1436.

In English. On vellum, 36 lines on one membrane, 275 x 510mm, indented at upper and left margins (some staining, not affecting legibility, and four puncture holes). Provenance: Sotheby's, 13 December 1965, lot 196.

Shakespeare's Duke of Suffolk as a regional magnate. The triplicate indenture settles a dispute opposing Sir William Drury and his wife Dame Margerie against Thomas Sampson and others about the ownership of the manor of Sproughton (in Suffolk). Also mentions John Halle.

William Drury knight son to Margrie? daughter to Thomas Raunton? knight and Dame Margrie? his wife, for him and William Clopton & Andrew Byrd on that one pte and Thomas Sampson for him and Margrie? his wife, daughter of John ffelbrigge knight, son of George ffelbrigge knight and to the said Margrie? his wife, onetime wife of the said Thomas Raunton.

After a notable, if undistinguished, role in Henry V's campaigns in France (the highpoint of his military career involved being captured by Joan of Arc), Suffolk ascended over the course of the 1430s to a position of dominance in the royal government of the weak Henry VI, which included a key role in the founding of Eton and King's College, Cambridge. His hegemony was brutally ended in the popular uproar of 1450, which culminated in his extra-judicial execution whilst attempting to flee into exile. He is a prominent figure in Shakespeare's Henry VI, parts 1 and 2. The present document reflects his position as one of the leading regional magnates in East Anglia.
