Here
we have eight antique documents, they are all on vellum paper, and are very
old. I am selling a large amount of them as I am about to move property in a
few weeks, and really need to clear some room. This would make a great job
lot, or would be very interesting for a historian, or someone with a general
interest. The documents are all unrelated. DEED
ONE –from 1693, This is brilliant document involving the area of New
Woodstock in the county of Oxon. It is a mortgage involving as far as I can
see a ‘ George Wives’ This document is in great condition for its age, and
also has amazing artwork of the monarch at the time. DEED
TWO & THREE - From 1746 a multi page vellum document, with ‘conveyance ‘ on it. It involves Mr Shelly from Stafford. With this
document comes a Lease for a year involving the same people. DEED
FOUR – From 1760 it is a recovery involving ‘Whittaker’ this is a beautiful
document with amazing art work. It’s from the area of Berkshire. The document
has some stains on it, however is still in great condition for its age. DEED
FIVE – From 1718 this is a mortgage involving John Moles from Charlton. This
is quite a small document, with one wax seal. DEED
SIX & SEVEN – From 1797 involving William Smallwood it is a conveyance of
an estate in Stafford. This document has small art work of the monarch at the
time. Included with this is a vellum lease for a year, involving the same
people. There are also a few small letters and receipts within the documents DEED
EIGHT – From 1794 it is a release and involves a John Spindlow.
It regards Yarnton in Oxfordshire. |

A
1786 manuscript relating to a release regarding buildings and various parcels
of land in the county of Stafford. The parties involved are William Henry Wybberley of Woodhead, Derby
gent and others, releasing Francis Whitgreave
esquire. The others are Ann his wife, George Merry and Gilbert Merry all of
which are three of the younger children of Thomas Henry the Elder. Further
details are given about where they live and what job they do. The buildings
and parcels of land are in Dearnsdols? Woollaston, Haughton, Blakehough,
Denrington, Colon Clanford,
in the several parishes of Haughton, Bradley and Seighford
all in the county of Stafford. It recites an indenture made in 1753. It gives
a lot of details regarding family history and the legal requirements of
various parties and how those positions have changed with time. It then
states that Francis Whitgreave will pay the above
parties six hundred pounds in return for them consenting to a release. A
large manuscript on vellum measuring 2 feet 7 inches by 1 foot 10 inches. An
interesting document though in poor condition it contains a wealth of family
history. The vellum is worn with several holes and tears appearing along the
central crease. The document has been damaged by water resulting in staining
with some of the words being faded or lost, though most are readable. Though
also spoilt by water there is a blue stamp on the side and four wax seals
with signatures along the base. |

forest of Rockingham. In 1292 he was described as keeper of the king’s wardrobe
and perhaps as well, treasurer of the wardrobe. He was appointed bishop of
Coventry and Lichfield and became the king’s chief minister. With
responsibility and great wealth came enemies, chief amongst them Robert de Winchelsea, archbishop of Canterbury and in 1300 Langton
was forced to travel to Rome to defend himself against accusations of
adultery by Sir John Lovetot. The case was handed
back from Rome to Winchelsea who had no choice but
to declare him innocent. After this Edward I, who had never doubted Langton’s
innocence appointed him an executor of his will and a baron of the treasury. “On 15 June 1305 he [Langton] was involved in a
grave dispute with Edward, prince of Wales [the future Edward II], who had
invaded his woods, and answered his remonstrances
with insult. Hot words passed between the minister and the prince, but the
king warmly took the treasurer’s side, and the prince was forced into
submission.” (DNB). In 1307 Edward died and Langton was arrested as he
travelled to London to arrange for his master’s funeral. Edward II and his
friend Piers Gaveston stripped Langton of his
offices and wealth and he was imprisoned, much of his wealth being given to Gaveston. As Edward’s financial situation deteriorated
Langton was set free and in time, was restored to his office of treasurer
only to fall foul of Winchelsea who excommunicated
him for taking office in spite of the injunctions of the Lords Ordainers. Langton for the second time travelled to Rome
to protest his innocence, but Winchelsea died and reconcilliation was again possible. Langton returned to
his old position only to forced out once again by
parliament in 1315. Langton died on 9 November 1321 and was buried in the
Lady Chapel at Lichfield Cathedral. |
