one page vellum indenture dated 28th February 1872 relating to two houses in Stone,
Staffordshire between John Dowell of Acton Tussell (farmer) and William Hine
Haycock of 4 College Hill, London (gent.).
Earlier indentures going back to 1846 are cited and the following
names are mentioned: John Wright, William Williams + Mary his wife; William
Tym Middleton, Thomas Podmore + Ann his wife, George Mills and William
Griffith Frith. Has two signatures and
seals with a revenue stamp. There are
witness and received signatures on the reverse. Has been folded, otherwise good condition. |

This is
a handwritten will and testament of an Elizabeth Atkin, a widow from the Manor
at Burton Upon Trent in Staffordshire dated 14th September 1779. The two page
(325x210mm) will is signed and red wax sealed (very little wax left) by
Elizabeth Atkin. A Mary Wilson, William Richards and John Yeomans are
witnesses. Attached to the will is a probate certificate (225x220mm) after
Mrs Atkins death dated 2nd May 1781. This is also handwritten. John Hepworth
is the clerk and a registrar named Fletcher has also signed. Other names
noted for the local historian: Mary, John and Sarah Greenfield, Thomas
Harrison and a Henry Bakerswell. The will and probate certificate has a
little fraying and fading but is in presentable condition for it's 200 year
existence complete with Georgian duty stamp. |

Street, Congleton; 12 houses in Rood Lane, Congleton; house, garden and land

This is
a one page document dated 22nd June 1867 involving the proprietor of the
Sneyd Colliery (closed in 1966) in Burslem near Stoke. The gentleman's name
is Charles Bower May and he is borrowing money from the Life Association of
Scotland on the strength of some maturing life policies which he pledges to
the association. The document (13.5"x8.5") is a part printed form
with handwritten entries. Charles May has signed and red wax sealed. Two
clerks from Burslem, a Thomas Oliver and a G.M Steele have witnessed and
endorsed the document. The item is in good presentable condition together
with a Scottish duty stamp. |

This is
a written agreement and contract between five people on the 1851 previous
will of a farmer named Thomas Swetnam deceased of the Green Man Inn Croxden
in Staffordshire. This document is dated 3rd June 1852. The five people are

five people have signed the contract. A Hugh Shaw is the executor and two
legal clerks have signed as witnesses (Thomas Shaw of Leek the other
indistinct). The two page (17.5x9.5") document is in good presentable
condition with fading consistent with age. Two Victorian duty stamps are
present, one stamped the other embossed. |

document contains a lot of information about the Trafford family and the
estate properties. There
is no date on it but British History Online has it listed for 1705. It comprises 12 pages which have been
stitched together. It has been folded
and has damage along the fold on the cover page. There is a lot of foxing on all the
pages. It also has a thick sheet of
paper which has been made into an protective covering which has the title
handwritten on it. |

page document relating to a dispute between Philip Trafford, gent and Stephen
Bagott concerning the estate of Swithamley Grange in Leek. It comprises of "Interrogatories to be
ministred on the part and behalf of..."
The statements of individuals were taken at Congleton by Thomas
Stanley, John Ward, William Vulvine and Ralf Egerton in the 21st and 22nd
year of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth. The
dispute would appear to be about land which was in the "hands of the Abbott
of the Monestrie for the maintenance of their houskepinge by their
servaints" (Dieulacres Abbey).
