[Sherratt]
Prosecution Brief for Attempted Murder This is the brief used at the trial of Joseph
Sherratt, held at the Staffordshire Assizes in March 1842. Sherratt '... a person of bad character and
goes about the country and sleeps in barns......a man of weak intellect (but
more rogue than fool) and where offended very revengeful....' was accused of
breaking into 69 year old Sarah Smith's cottage at Pool End, Leek Frith, and
beating her about the head and body.
It seems pretty evident from all the evidence from the various
witnesses that Sherratt 'done it' - indeed a note on the front of the brief
says 'pleaded guilty' Wonder what
became of him? Manuscript on 6 large
paper sheets with a 7th as the covering sheet. (ref S396) |
