This an original letter refering to a purchase of 'Lady Day' which I think is the
name of the property, Dated 18th October 1848. Extract:-
.......... " Mrs Snowdon had due notice (served on 28 Sept 1847) to quit
on 25 march, or at the end of her current year, all the lands she held of the
trustees. It is quite clear she has overheld and I should recommend the purchasers to proceed
for damages in the county court. Written on 3 sides of folded paper, an
interesting document. In good condition, |

Unusual
Group of 3 Antique Legal documents relating to property in ‘Claxton otherwise
Little Claxton’ in North Yorkshire. One of the owners of the property appears
to have been resident on the Island of Madeira at the time of a transfer of
ownership of the property. The documents here appear to relate to the
appointment of Special Commissioners in Madeira who could confirm that the
owner understood the implications of the Sale etc. One of the documents bears
the signature of a Knight and Justice of the Court of Westminster. Document
1) Deed
of Appointment at the Court of Common Pleas, of EDMUND ELLICOTT (Merchant)
and WILLIAM HINTON both of the Island of Madeira as SPECIAL COMMISSIONERS.
This Document is signed by SIR RICHARD BUDDEN CRUNDEN (Knight) one of the Justices
at the Court. This is a Waxed Deed dated 14th January 1856 and bears an
Enrolment Stamping and relates to the taking of an acknowledgement by MARY
ANN LUND, the wife of DR GEORGE LUND (Doctor of Medicine) owners of the
property in Yorkshire, although both were resident on the Island of Madeira
at the time. Document
2) Sworn
affidavit by EDMUND ELLICOTT witnessed by GEO. STODDAY (Her Majestys Consul for Madeira) dated ‘Funchal’
24th January 1856 certifies that MARY LUND was of full age and competent
understanding etc. Document bears the British Consulate Madeira Stamping. Document
3) ‘Commissioners
Certificate’ and acknowledgement signed by EDMUND ELLICOTT and WILLIAM HINTON
relating to an Indenture made between JOHN SINGLETON and JAMES RICHARD
SINGLETON, BARNARD JAMES BOULTON. GEORGE LUND , MARY
LUND, HENRY GARBURGH GOLD AND ELEANOR GOLD, JANE PHIPPS AND WILLIAM AND
GEORGE GOTHORPE (relating to property in Claxton in Yorkshire) dated 24th
January 1856. Note
– William Gothorpe appears to have owned property
in Earswick Yorkshire and lived at 19 Monkgate. York. These are an unusual group of documents,
may appeal to those with a local history interest in Yorkshire or the Island
of Madeira. These documents date to a period towards the end of the Crimean
War. Some research may explain why Dr & Mrs
Lund were in Madeira. It is interesting to note that the ‘post’ from
Westminster to Funchal took less than 10 days.

The
Family Devotional Bible with copious notes and reflections on each chapter of

Bible, highlighted by numerous beautiful engravings, most of which are by the
well known engraver J. Rogers. Printed and published by The London Printing
and Publishing Company Limited, London and New York. Contains Old Testament (1144 pages), New
Testament (460 pages) and Apocrypha (168 pages). With many additional notes, including two
central columns of cross-references plus detailed commentary etc. Fronticepiece
engraving of Rev Matthew Henry, the famous Biblical commentator. Black
leather boards with gilt titles and raised bands on spine. Blind-tooled decoration. Rubbing and markings to boards, especially extremeties.
Previous owners' details on endpapers and inside page, also
booksellers stamp. A few pages have
small tears, marks etc, one tape repair. One page loose. What makes
this Bible particularly special are the numerous beautiful engravings, with
lovely decorated borders. Included in
the pictures below are one of Mary and Jesus from a painting by Raphael, and
another of the Last Supper. The
engravings themselves are extremely valuable.
Internally
some light foxing, but pages generally clean and tight. A number of the engravings show signs of
staining at the page edges which does not affect the main part of the
engraving (nor the printed pages!) Family
history pages include details of the Pledger family
from early 1800's, please later details of Grice
family from early 1900's. |

Victorian
Illustrated Welsh Thomas Jones Family Bible This is a
wonderfully illustrated and substantial leather bound Welsh Bible, with
gilt edged pages, with entries from the Thomas and Jones families, dating
circa 1850-1900. In 1539 Henry VII permitted the publication of the bible in
English. In 1546 the first book in the Welsh language was published. This
beautiful version is leather bound and has a rich brown colour
with a beautiful dark mottled effect. The
cover has a fabulous impressed gilt design with foliate and floral fans and
scrolls, with geometric borders and scrolling vine tendrils and stylised leaves. To the centre, around the title is a
gold impressed starburst or sunburst, surrounded by almost celtic knot designs, overlaid with ribbon banners
containing the words, reading from top to bottom, "Efengyl"
(Gospel in Welsh), "Gogoniant",
"Y", "Bendigedig" (Blessed)
"Dduw". Beneath this, hidden within the celtic knot design is "ITIM.I.II". This is an
impressive bible with approximately 1185 pages, containing many illustrations
and colour plates and written completely in the
Welsh language. The first etching on the leading pages is entitled
"CHRIST IN GLORY", featuring Jesus, seated with his robes on, his
arms apart with his palms facing outwards. The etching is by Hoopmann. The printed title page is illuminated in
vibrant reds, blues and golds, and features a
praying angel in a rose window, above trefoil arches and columns, and reads,
"Y BIBL - Cyssegr-Lan, gyda
nodiadau esponiadol, gan y Parch. Peter Williams a'r Parch. Matthew Henry". Peter
Williams and Matthew Henry have both written introductory chapters, which
appear at the beginning of the book. The bible features chapters from both
the New and the Old Testament, starting with Genesis through to the Apostles
and Judas and John. The book was published by Grange Publishing Works in
Edinburgh, by Thomas C. Jack. There are some fabulous colourful
etchings and educational pictures. One of these lithographs, by McFarlane
& Erskine Lithographers, Edinburgh, shows the Bible Natural History and
features beautifully coloured etchings of a lion,
elephant, fox, mole, sheep, wolf, ox, ass and whale - animals that have
appeared in the bible, and some of which people in the past were unfamiliar
with and only heard about through tales and books. Another
plate shows crocodiles, ostriches and locusts. One etching, "Isaiah the
Prophet", has been adapted from a painting by Michaelangelo
Buonarotti. To the centre of the bible is a section
with handwritten entries in ink, with marriages, births and deaths. The main
family appears to be a Mr Thomas Jones who was born
in 1866. Mr Jones married Angharad
Ann Jones, who was born in 1869. They had children called David and Sarah
Jones. The earliest date entered in calligraphy in ink is 1866, which is the
year of birth of Thomas Jones, so we can say that the bible dates some time
after this. Thomas Jones died in 1920. The latest date entry that is written
is 1934. This really is very interesting and would be of special interest to
someone maybe tracing back their family tree and others interested in
genealogy and family history. The
plates are protected by thin tissue paper pages. The pages have slightly
yellowed with age, adding character and authenticity to the book. The book is
missing the leather cover to the spine and the front cover has become
detached along with a couple of the leading pages. Aside from this, the pages
are in very good condition and the plates retain their vivid colour and detail. The width of this impressive book is
approximately 10inches (25.5cm), the length of the book is 13.25inches
(33.5cm) and is just over 3inches (7.8cm) thick. |

The
New and Grand Imperial Family Bible: containing the Sacred Text of the Old
and New Testament, with the Apocrypha at large, illustrated with notes and annotations
historical, chronological, geographical and explanatory; forming a complete
and full exposition and commentary on the Holy Scriptures. Wherein the
difficult passages are explained, mistranslations corrected, and the seeming
contradictions reconciled, by the Rev Henry Moore, DD. This delightful old
Bible is in quite worn condition, with a number of faults, but it is still a
charming old book. The cover boards are loose, the boards are worn and marked
and the backstrip is attached to only one board and
not the rest of the book; the first few and final few pages are largely
creased, torn, stained and in weak condition; many of the other pages have
some foxing, creases, stains and other marks. The front endpapers have the
details of various births and deaths written in ink, from 1817 to 1860.
Published by A Whellier of Paternoster Row and G Brimmer of Fleet Street, it is otherwise undated. From

onwards. This is a stunning example of an early scrapbook/keepsake album. It
contains some of the finest pencil sketches I have ever come across. I believe
that the album belonged to members of the same family and was passed down
from one to another. It appears to have firstly
belonged to a JANET RIDPATH, then passed to a WILLIAM ALEXANDER RIDPATH and
then finally passed to an ALICE MARGARET RIDPATH. It is full of a variety of
different pieces such as ,excellent pencil drawings, ink and watercolour sketches, poetry, and well written entries. Many
are signed and dated. Throughout the album there seems to be a connection
with mariners,ships and
also Edinburgh. Below are just a few examples from this exceptional album. A

Carrington, 2pp., sm. 4to, St. James Place, 12th May 1797, “I am sorry to
find our present manager on the Jamaican estate is following the steps of his
predecessors, but I can by no means consent to the old remedy of appointing
another being adopted, because we have hitherto invariably found that the
only difference between the two has been that the old one having made his
fortune is less rapacious than the new one who has his fortune to make.
Besides I must remark that (excepting Mr Winter…)
every other manager… have been all of Mr Paynes nomination & that under the administration of
those gentlemen instead of remittances from our estates we have been brought
in debtors near £20000.” |

a
rare item in excellent condition showing no damage what so ever It just shows
slight soiling this is only mentioned for accuracy Hand written on heavy
parchment and is very legible I have
had trouble deciphering it in its entirety due to the copperplate writing of
the time As far as I can make out it concerns a court case presided over by
John Jeffrey’s 1st Marques Of Camden infamously known for his poor handling
of the Irish rebellion It concerns a certain Adam Jacob “schoolmaster” who
had agreed to purchase a property in 1817 from a George Fullagar
and Francis Reed It then seems that George Fullagar
passed away leaving Francis Reed his rightful heir who refused to sell to
Adam Jacob Adam Jacob then attempted to sell the property called Stowhall?? To a Richard Jones for the sum of £285 In
conclusion it seems that the court/ John Jeffery’s decided that the sum of
£285 be paid to Adam Jacobs from Richard Jones leaving Francis Reed with a
small fine from the court of ten shilling I have tried to the best of my
ability to decipher and understand the whole of the parchment But due to the copperplate
writing and words used there may be room for error Also included are three
Blue seals showing possible coat of arms and the sum of £1 impressed on each
of the seals On the reverse of the parchment opposite the seals it shows
paper labels for George 1st The parchment measures 41cm wide by 61cm high |

CINDERELLA
CIRCA 1882 Printed on Linen. This is a rare find and in surprising condition
for its age. It says on cover: Aunt Louisa's London Toy Books Price one
shilling or mounted with linen two shillings The book has some fraying on
page edges and browning with age but otherwise in very good nick. It has a
page included that says May Gould 1882, Cindarella
which is why I have indicated circa 1882, it also has an inscription on back
of one of the linen pages saying May Gould from her Aunty E.S.W. 12/1/95. The
book has full colour pictures on each page. |

Here
we have four documents/ deeds, there are two from 1794, one
involves a lease for a year, with the name as far as I can tell being a Sir
Robert S. Cotton Bart. The lease for a year is on thick paper, with a funny feel
to it, It could be vellum or parchment but I am cannot be sure, however its
very special paper if not. It has two red wax seals on the bottom of the
page. The
Second Document from 1794 is again regarding a lease, it is not on the same
quality paper, its on thinner paper, yet it has two seals as before, It does
not have 'draft' written on it I just think they used different stationary.
Again this document involves Sir Robert S. Cotton Bart. Both documents are in
good condition for their age, they have been folded not rolled. The
third document involves Mr William David, and Mr John Coleman and is a Mortgage, and is dated 1842. It
has a small tear on the page, apart from this the
document is in good condition. It again has two wax seals on the bottom of
the page. The
Forth Document again involves John Coleman and is an ‘Assignment of
messages‘. Both of these documents are again on the high quality paper, which
I feel could be Vellum or parchment . Again these
documents have been folded not rolled. |

Brown's
self-interpreting Family Bible: (Family named BONE) once owned this bible.
Large old family bible (not sure when it was published) has very clear and bright
illustrations in good condition for its age spine is not broken, no torn
pages, cover has wear (see pics) cover is dark
brown with gold gilding. The inside has some writing on the family register
page a family named BONE. (Harrogate area?) Looking
at the insertions Ruth Bone has put the information in. She is the daughter
of Alfred Bone DOB: 22.09.1863, s.o. Philip Bone,
DOD: 14.06.1939 and Elizabeth Mary Bone,Nee:Howard,d.o.
Robert Howard, DOB 06.01.1867- DOD 13.10.1951, married 18 Jan 1890. Sons and
daughters are named in the register but there are no pictures in the family
portrait gallery. It
would be nice for this bible to return to the family of Alfred and Elizabeth
Bone, the bible was bought by me about 12 years ago from Harrogate not sure if
this is where it originates from. Containing
the Old and New testaments; to which are annexed an extensive introduction;
marginal references and illustrations; an exact summary of the several books;
a paraphrase on the most obscure or important parts; explanatory notes;
evangelical reflections. By the Late Rev. John Brown minister of the Gospel

illustrations in oil & steel. Published by EDINBURGH: Thomas C. Jack, Grange

There are three red wax seals on the botton on
black inserts and a seal on side with cost of One pound 15 shillings. This is
an old English document and would look wonderful in a frame. I think its about a property transaction/mortgage. I find old english script too hard to make out but no problem for an
expert. Some age wear on back of vellum to be expected. |

The
CHILD'S BIBLE Illustrated This is a fascinating vintage version for serious
collectors The award sticker on the inside front cover reads "Jireh" Band of Hope - 1st Prize Awarded to Gertie Purdue for Recitations July 11 1887 Signed - H.
Matthews, Secy" The
Bible features both Old and Nw Testament Narratives
with beautiful illustrations throughout. Unfortunately the page showing the
publisher is missing. CONDITION
- Several of the first pages are missing, with the pages commencing on Page
17, which is the commencement page of the Old Testament (this page is
loose). The last two pages of the New
Testament are also loose and quite damaged - though still readable. There is pencil scribble on the inside back
cover, and also on one or two other blank spaces on pages throughout the 738
pages. The binding is in pretty good condition for its age, so are the boards
and spine intact (some water staining to the top of the spine and just
spilling onto the back board), binding has separated
from 3/4 of spine. |
