A genuine
couple of 180 year old school exercise books, believed to be those of Joseph
Whitaker, (born May 4th1820, died 1895) when he was a 13 year old boy, i.e.
dated 1834, 1 year before entering the publishing business as an apprentice,
which led to his career in which he was responsible for producing the famous
Whitaker’s Almanac, -1st edition in 1868, which has run annually until today.
I looked up his dates on the internet and these books exactly match the
period for provenance, plus there are some notes in one book (illustrated on
Ebay) showing his first receipts for taking on work as a bookbinder, -his
entry point into the book business. I inherited these from my father,-
chairman of the British Printing Society in his lifetime, who collected
printing ephemera, so I am sure it is the same J.Whitaker as of Almanac fame.
(There is also a note in one with the name & number of someone who may be
a relative and may be able to provide further provenance). The books are in
beautifully neat copper plate handwriting, done with an italic nib, with
exterior marbled card covers, and
mainly contain neatly laid out mathematics tasks, -Algebra, Fractions,
Addition etc., plus some other sayings, wisdoms of the day, famous quotes and
even a few ‘lines’ – obviously from when he misbehaved at school. In those
days, this is the way in which schools demanded meticulously neat work,
including Mathematics notes, showing all workings and staying accurately on
the lines of the page with a uniformly parallel slope (unlike nowadays).
These books would be a great example say for a History or Mathematics teacher
to show pupils how schoolwork used to be done 180 years ago! and could
equally go to an Education museum. Here are a few quotes from some of the
Handwriting exercises in the back of one book- and who knows, some of these
could have been made up by Joseph Whitaker himself?, or equally likely copied
off the blackboard of a dusty schoolroom,-yet he has signed them as his own: “ KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge
softened with complacency and good breeding will make a man equally beloved
and admired; but being joind with a severe and morose temper, it makes a man
rather feard than respected. and
another:- “There
is no conversation so agreeable as that of the man of integrity, who hears
without any intention to betray and
speaks without any intention to
deceive. Joseph Whitaker. 6th January. 1834” and
another: “An honest man esteems
himself indebted to his country for everything he enjoys, therefore he thinks
that he is under the highest obligations to it. Joseph Whitaker. 1834.” Altogether
there are similar such quotes for:
Friendship, Humility, Discretion, Learning, Industry and Falsehood,
plus a little French and a lot of Algebra. |

A unique
chance to buy a rare Mathematics book belonging to a Miss Mason dated
Oct.17th 1834. As you can see the this lovelly book is hard bound, although
the spine is splitting,it holds together well and a couple of pages have been
removed from the back what looks like many years ago. The inside cover has
been lovingly decorated with Angels and Cherubs in a nautical theme. The
first page covers multiplication and later carries on division and
reduction.Writen in a beautiful flowing script the last pages are written
Mathematical theorems and puzzles Also in the book comes a church card
belonging to Mary Grace Collins signed by the Vicar AR Duckworth dating the
years of her Baptism-1866,Confirmation-1884,first Communion-1884.These 2
items came together and I presume they are related.Perhaps Miss Collins was a

This document
is in very good condition for its age. It is totaly hand written on very
thick parchment like paper. The document is composed of eight sheets in total
all of the same size all hand written. There are lots of wax seals at the
bottom of the pages and many signatures of the witnesses involved. There is a
stamp attached to one page that looks a little like a very early postage
stamp. On the front page are 2 blue paper impressed seals which have a royal
crest on and 'one pound 5 shillings', they seem to have silver strips
embedded in them. The document has been folded (correctly) for a very long
time and the writing is a little faded in the creases, please see the
pictures. Otherwise it is very good indeed. The title on the front is; Dated
27th oct 1819 SETTLEMENT on the intended marriage of Dr Haviland with Miss

Highly
Collectable Indenture and patent seal . I am no expert on these so I will
describe it as best I can . The indenture approx 72cms wide was at one stage
attached to the seal but has come loose . Its written for a " P B G
Debac " who from what I can read was a civil engineer and Invented
something to do with the railroad which appears he was granted to hold for 14
years and receive all benifits . The Indenture is dated with a blue stamp
1837 and has a very impressive calligraphy William the IV monogram and
decoration at the top . Its in good condition but is grubby from age and
storage . The Wax seal comes in its original metal tin with a hole for the
seal to be attached . The seal is okay but looks a bit melted and has some
edge marks . Its approx 15.cms diameter . The Indenture and seal come in a
larger tin which is a bit rusty . |

Family. A large archive of manuscript papers concerning an extensive account
of travel and observations throughout India, the Middle and Far East, and
Northern Africa, by a British Military Officer, with added notes derived from
the study of the existing authorities of these regions, late 19th c., incl.
both personal observations and historical notes ranging back to the Middle
Ages, incl. a paper on Military Organisation, approx. 60pp, a list of the
Caliphs of Baghdad, information on India, Arabia, Burma, Shanghai and the
Yangtse, Java and Japan, together with some pages on Canada, the American
Indians, etc., contained in four buff folio card folders These
papers derive from the family of William Hicks (Hicks Pasha) who was killed,

archive includes material dated after Hicks Pasha's death, this is probably
the work of a son or younger brother. |

Recently
discovered during a house renovation, this is the most beautifully written
young ladies workbook. The frontspiece is signed Mary Thompson Kendal, 19th
September 1832 in exquisite handwriting, as is the complete book.Subject headings
are : Reduction, Direct Proportion,Practise,Tare and Tret,Simple
Interest,Promiscuous ?,Compound
Interest,Brokerage,Commission,Insurance,Purchasing Stock,Discount,Single
Fellowship and Double Fellowship. Needless
to say hours of effort have gone into this work and it really would put
today's children to shame. This is truly worth owning, if only to show your
own offspring how lucky they are, when complaining about their homework ! The
book is in excellent condition, having marbled board covers measuring
9"x 7.5". Please
take a look at my other listing from the same premises recording the
customers accounts from The White Hart Hotel, Retford between 1815 and 1840. |

a really nice family bible, leather bound, gilt edged pages. The size is

being pulled out from a bookcase on many occasions. Inside front cover is
inscribed "Mrs Gibbins for her children from S F Enderby" Inside
the back cover is the family history. A list of births and deaths from 1833
to 1888. The tiyle page has the bottom right corner torn away and a tear at

HOLY
BIBLE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS PRE-1914 This is a leather bound Bible
containing the Old and New Testaments. 'Translated out of the original
tongues; and with the former translations diligently compared and revised by
His Majesty's Special Command'. Printed by Eyre and Spottiswoode, printers to
the King's most Excellent Majesty. What makes this fascinating is the hand
drawn illustration on the inside cover. The Bible was presented to a boy in
1914, on the occasion of his baptism, by his Godmother and she has written an
inscription and illustrated it with flowers. It is written and illustrated in
Green, Blue, Red and Black ink. The flowers are very finely drawn and are
beautifully detailed. She was obvioulsy a very good artist. The inscription
says Presented
to Keith
Albert Messenger Souch As a
token of love from his Godmother Miss Ada King - In
memory of his Baptism at St Augustines, Gillingham, August 16th 1914. Trusting
that it may be taken as his guide through life on earth to life eternal in
Heaven. A
little child shall lead them. Isiah
11-6. The
pages are in very good condition. The leather cover is the type that is
larger than the book and moulds round and encases the pages. Could be
