OUT OF THE ORIGINAL TONGUES AND WITH THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY
COMPARED AND REVISED pub by JOHN BASKETT, OXFORD, 1733, 4to, Full Calf. This
lovely bible is bound in original contemporary calf with blind tooling to
spine and boards. The full collection of works herein is as follows: 1)THE
BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER (with Psalter); BASKETT, 1733; 2) THE HOLY BIBLE...;
BASKETT, 1733 (includes Apocrypha); 3) THE NEW TESTAMENT (with index and

Internally, the book is very clean and easy to read. This is a delightful

This
book is a carefully kept record of newspaper cuttings mainly about the war
periods and other interesting and major topics, the earliest newspaper
cutting being from The Times 1899. It covers many subjects from war to
cricket, from the Oxford/Cambridge boat race to Royalty. Also enclosed in
this fascinating scrapbook are some intriguing French documents dated 1914.
They concern an Englishman Mr Walter Meakin. From the research that I have
carried out it seems in my opinion that Walter Meakin has to flee NOVEMBER
1899 - THE This
fascinating book then ends abruptly without explanation. The book, in my
opinion is in fantastic condition, although the cover is worn. This is a
truly historical record and I am sure would be of great interest to a
historian etc. There are approximately 160 pages full of newspaper cuttings,
four French documents and one French magazine. The size of the scrapbook is
approximately 11.5 inches x 9 inches. |

THis
rare bible was published in 1846 by Samuel Bagster and Sons, London. Overall
size is 10" x 7.5" It has a stunning binding in stout dark brown
leather. The boards are very thick, the surfaces, identical front and back,
have a deep blind impressed blocked design and rounded edges. The spine has 5
heavily raised bands, with impressed decoration in the compartments and Gilt
titling. All edges have a highly unusual and very decorative gilt goffered surface (see
pics). The endpapers are beautiful marbled paper, and the surrounding edges
are again gilt tooled. There is skillfully hand written page just before the
half title, in various styles of calligraphy, in black and red, from the
person who gave this to Emily Hutton on the occasion of her marriage in 1856.
The book is described as 'The Miniature Quarto Bible', this does not mean it
is a miniature book, only that it was made from small quarto paper. It
contains The Old and New Testaments according to authorised versions. There
is a general introduction, Parallel passages of Scott, canne, Brown, Adam
Clarke, and the english version of Bagsters Polyglot Bible. There are
numerous Philological and Explanatory notes, an Index to subjects, an index
to the notes, introductions and concluding remarks, and chronological tables,
a very large pull out one which traces man from the creation to the year 400
of the christian era. Also several hand coloured maps of the ancient world. The
interior is extremely clean and tight, no odours of any kind. There is
occasional brown marking here and there affecting the back of some of the
maps, and some foxing of endpapers. The corners of the boards are rubbed down
to the boards (see pic). The inscription reads: "To Emily Hutton on her
marriage from Elizabeth Maria Thompson in grateful rememberance of the
Christian care and kindness experienced by James Bower Thompson M.D. her
lamented husband and herself at ........? Hospital. I was a stranger and ye
took me in I was sick and ye visited me. See Matt XXV. MDCCCLVI". |

This is
an original manuscript legal opinion given by R Wilbraham of Lincoln’s Inn London,
and dated May 5th 1768, relating to the will of Mrs Sarah Ashurst, July 1754.
Clearly written in characteristic eighteenth century copperplate, on a single
sheet of watermarked rag paper, 41 x 32 cm folded in half to make four pages,
of which three are written upon. VERY GOOD CONDITION, save that the fold is
almost completely torn. The opinion relates to the words: “I give all the
rest and residue of my Estate to my Sister Elizabeth Richier all to be at her
disposal Except 500£, which 500£ after the death of my sister Richier I give
to my Neice Mary Houlding and I do appoint my Sister Richier Sole Exectrix of
this my will.” This Mary Houlding survived the testatrix, but died an infant
before Elizabeth Richier. Claimants on Mary Houlding’s estate include her
mother Elizabeth Richier who had remarried and was now Mrs Archibald Maclane,
her sister Sarah Houlding (now Mrs Francis Coal), and half-siblings Thomas
Ashurst Maclane and Elizabeth Maclane (now Mrs Hugh Smith). |

This beautiful
illustrated book is fully titled: A Complete Treatise on Practical
Land-Surveying in seven parts; Designed chiefly for the use of schools and
provate students. By A Nesbit. The whole illustrated by two hundred and fifty
Practical Exaamples, and one hundred and sixty Wood Cuts, twelve
Copper-plates, and an Engraven Field-Book of sixteen Pages. The book is
inscribed (in faded ink copperplate hand to endpaper), Charles Tanner, March
9th 1842. Printed by Thomas Wilson & Sons, High-Ousegate, for Longman,
Orme, Brown, Green, and Longmans, Paternoster Row London; and for Wilson
& Sons, York, 1839. An absolutely fascinating book with the most
wonderful illustrations. Some of these drawings are almost works of art in
their own right. I am told that much of the theory has changed little.
Diagrams of instruments (pentograph), land areas within the Derwent area. A
wonderful piece of history and a detailed text book. In the introduction Mr
Nesbit offers private tuition to boarders in Manchester! In very good condition
for the age. Hand-cut pages. Minor foxing on some pages. Cloth and board
covers. Please see photos. A treasure of a book as an historic document and
excellent reference work. Approximately, 9 inches high x 6 inches across.

This
bible is 375 years old and was printed in London by Bonham Norton and John
Bill in 1629 when Charles I was still King of England. It is considering its
age in good condition. It has the odd page missing and the odd tear, but is
about 98% complete, some of the pages are discoloured but the text is quite
easy to read. I can not see much writing in it but one page seems to reveal
an owner but there is no date with the name so at what period this owner had
it is unknown. The name appears to be Margret Agsquith. The leather binding
is mostly complete a little missing from the spine and the brass catches have
long been broken. It measures 9 X 7 inches. |

This is
a intreging find, i am no expert so i will try to describe the best i can,
the bible measures when closed 5 and a half inches tall, 3 inches wide, 1 and
a half inches deep, bound in leather, not sure of the date but dates include
1713,but could easaly be earlier, extremely old item. leather is a bit poor
and i think the bible could have been near a fire because the edges seem to
be burnt, can not tell if all the pages are there,no title page, and some are
torn and ripped, although very poor condition, the bible is very very old.
The inscription reads "Askwith November ye 16 day 1713. FINIS Jane
Askwith ..m 24 of October 1714" From the IGI, almost all the Jane
Askwiths at this time were baptised in Yorkshire. |

This is
a great genuine Queen Anne vellum / parchment document dated, "20 April

of John Swaine --- to a pightel of pasture, Barn called Howards-----& 20 acres of arable land

sure a word or 2 is a little wrong. The other side (and full detailed part) looks to me to be Latin
so i cannot read it. please see scans which
you can tansfere and enlarge to get a better look. The document is all
hand written on vellum parchment.size 5 1/2" x10 1/4" (14 x 26) The
Condition is good for almost 300 years old. writing is readable , with some
staining, i'm sure exsperts will be
able to read it all quiet easily. a great peice for any collector , Local
museum of family / History, not sure of manor as it could be in Latin (Manor of ) Gooyes e Chambloyus
Bury in Dunton ( not sure if it's Dunton Bedfordshire , Buckinghamshire or
Norfolk ?) also not sure if this is John Swaine the noted engraver who was
working at this time. But great for anyone with more time and knowledge to
research. From the image I can read "28 April 1700 The Manor of Goyes
& Chamberlaines - Bury in Dunton. Admission of John Swaine Senr. to a
pightel of pasture & Barn called hawards & 20 acres of Arable land on

Southcott
(Joanna, prophetess, 1750-1814). An extensive collection of manuscripts
(drafts, copies and originals) put together by John Burton, a follower of
Joanna Southcott, dated between 1814 and 1835, the collection comprising approx.
115 well-filled pages, mostly folio and quarto, many by or in the hand of
Burton, some worn and dusty but clearly legible, some folded, a few showing
signs of having been mailed or hand delivered The majority of the documents
date from the mid part of the second decade of the century. There are copies
of Southcottian communications (messages received by Joanna Southcott from
her spirits) in both prose and doggerel verse. These were recorded by Ann
Underwood, her secretary and companion. The major interest, however, lies in
a number of more personal items. These include a letter from Burton to Joanna
Southcott in which he describes a number of his dreams at some length and
asks for her help with their interpretation; Letters to George Turner (a
Leeds merchant and prophet who managed to secure the allegiance of many of
Joanna's followers after her death) which reveal Burton's increasing doubts
about the authenticity of Turner's claims; A long and interesting letter of
moral advice from Burton to his daughter Jemima; Draft of a letter from
Burton to the editor of an unknown newspaper complaining of the way the press
write about Joanna Southcott's doctrines, etc., etc. John Burton has been
identified as John Pritchard Burton, a Confectioner, formerly of Shoreditch,
London, later near Six Mile Stone, Edmonton, London, who died at Stoke
Newington on 6th July, 1862 (copy of death certificate included). This
important collection of communications between the followers of Southcott,
which, circulated widely, gives an exceptional insight into the mental world
of those that succumbed to her beliefs. Although the majority of these pieces
are early copies or drafts, exhaustive research has shown that little
survives and none (if any) have ever been published. As such this collection
provides important source material for research into the movement at
"grass roots" level. A full typescript transcription of the
collection is provided with the lot. |

This is
an 1834 Marriage Settlement made between Samuel Jackson Reid (1) his wife, Elizabeth Browne Reid (late

Beckley (3) and Thomas Browne Bickett (4) This is a very long, complicated
Settlement and is done in the old style with the first page on the reverse of
the backing sheet, and one works through towards the front. The inner pages
are in good condition, and easily legible. The seals are still intact. The
backing sheet is very dirty. There are no tears although it has been folded
for so long it is not easy to open out. It is very large once opened, and
best read on a large flat table (or a clean floor). |

This,
in my opinion is a fine example of an early Victorian scrapbook/journal. I
believe it dates circa 1825. It contains many beautiful handwritten passages/poems
etc as well as some fine sketches and a stunning signed watercolour. There
seems to be a great deal of interest in VENICE as some of the sketches depict
scenes from there On the inside cover is a handwritten dedication it reads:
TO DEAR DAVID MONEY FROM HIS AFFECTIONATE COUSIN LOUISA. The album cover
appears to be made from leather with embossed gold decoration. The edge of the
pages are gold leaf. With regards to condition the vast majority of the pages
and the contents are in very nice condition indeed. However some pages do have
some foxing/discolouration.It appears that at some point the clasp with the
keyhole been forcefully opened so this is now broken although still
attached.Where the clasp has been forced a few of the pages have been damaged.Apart
from this the album considering its age have faired remarkably well. This is
a lovely early piece with very interesting contents and it is rare to find a
scrapbook of this quality in such nice condition. A superb addition to any
collection. The scrapbook/journal measures approximately 9.5 inches X 7.5
inches. |

This really
is a lovely piece of Victorian history. It is a book that contains many
handwritten poems, thoughts, sonnets etc. I believe it belonged to a young
girl by the name of MARY EUGENIA MONEY. It appears to date circa 1818
onwards. (From the IGI, there is a record of a Mary Eugenia Money, born
around 1800, of Walthamstow, Essex). I have done a small bit of research on
the internet and was able to find a picture of this young woman.Perhaps if
someone has more time and know-how than myself they may be able to find out
the history behind her. She has created a contents page, listed below are
some of the contents titles: ON THE

makes this even more charming is that at the end of the book she has turned
the book upside down and written on the reverse of some of the pages. With
regards to condition it is in excellent condition considering the age. However
it appears that a few of the pages are missing. |
