Guadeloupe 1759. Manuscript letter-book of Major-General John Barrington (1720?-64), a series of eleven letters to Commodore Sir John Moore (1718-79), dated 2 March 1759 to 17 June 1759, followed by ten letters to [his eldest brother] William Wildman Barrington (1717-93), Secretary-at-War, and Secretary [William] Pitt (1708-78) written from HQ at Basseterre and Capesterre in Guadeloupe, followed by six other related reports from 5 March to 4 August, in all 76 pages (numbered 177-252) in a copperplate hand, numerous blanks at rear, some spotting and damp-rotting to lower margin affecting some catchwords and formalities, contemp. reversed calf with flap and brass lock (lacks key), spine inked 'Genl. Barrington, Commander in Chief, No. 2', some wear, folio

After the death of General Hopson at the end of February, Barrington had succeeded as command of the British expedition to reduce Guadeloupe from French occupation. This manuscript recounts his success and return to England in detailed copy letters originally written during that period. The British forces had been sick and in a state of very low morale when Barrington took charge after the weak leadership of his predecessor Hopson. Barrington's decision to attack was timely and Guadeloupe capitulated on 1 May just before French reinforcements arrived. This was the first of several British naval and military successes in 1759. The subject matter of the letters covers Barrington's reports to Moore on how many men to leave on the island, calculations for transporters, the sickliness of the troops due to overcrowding, arrangements for the sick and wounded; to Barrington and Pitt on the death of General Hopson, desertions, requests for provisions, numbers wounded, description of action at St Annes, St Francois, attack on the French near Arnoville and the taking of Capesterre, sugar cane revenue potential of the islands, details of the island's capitulation and the agreement, promotions, proposals, mentions of the 4th, 63rd and 64th Regiments, apparent happiness of the Guadeloupans under British control; plus Councils of War, the Chief Engineer's report of the state of Fort Louis and Warrants granted. Barrington appears in the British Biographical Archive but not in DNB where his father and four of his five brothers receive honourable mentions.

[Southey, Robert, 1774-1843, poet and man of letters]. The Journal of a short tour to the Lakes, by John May, 29 July to 5 August 1822, original neatly handwritten MS comprising forty-five leaves, most with writing to rectos only, numerous blanks at rear, orig. contemp. half calf, covers det. and spine deficient, 8vo

The author is believed to be the son of John May, the good friend and correspondent of Robert both Southey and members of the Coleridge family. The journal takes on Romantic themes describing by way of prologue the pros and cons of town and country life before beginning a Cobbett style diary. The journey, made by John May with his father, begins in Tavistock Street, London and proceeds on stage-coaches through St Albans, Dunstable, Warwick, Birmingham (with lengthy descriptions of Pin, Nail, Glass and Gun manufacturers visited), Shrewsbury, Ellesmere, Wrexham, Chester, Blackburn, Lancaster, Kendal, Ambleside, Windermere, Grasmere, Helvellin, Thurlmere, Saddleback, Skiddaw, Derwentwater, and finally Keswick, 'where we found Mr Southey at the inn all ready to receive us. He and my father proceeded immediately to his house, which is situated at the other end of town - I waited to accompany the baggage; which did not long delay me; and I found myself in Mr Southey's house about "the quarter past three". - when I was introduced to his wife and his eldest daughter "Edith". After then sitting with them for a short time, we went and prepared ourselves for dinner which was to be at "four", the familie's regular dinner hour. Having made myself comfortable I returned to the study where I was introduced to Mrs Coleridge and her daughter "Sara", I was likewise introduced to Dr Bell. Our dinner and evening went off very delightfully - and after supper, which was always at half-past nine, I was glad to adjourn to bed. I was very glad to find myself at that spot, where all further travelling was to cease for a time, - and have an opportunity of recalling what was past.' Here the journal finishes. See 'The Life and Correspondence of Robert Southey', edited by his Son, Charles Cuthbert Southey (New York, 1851). The letter printed on p. 405 is dated 10 December 1821 and entreats John May to 'break away from business, if it be possible, as early in the spring as you can, and put yourself in the mail for this place.', which presumably looks forward to the arrival where this journal so tantalisingly ends.

Plain workmanlike bible, bound in leather, faded ink inscription inside 'Ann Swan on Leaving School Christmas 1839', at the back is a record of Ann's Marriage to William Rowland Rimes, followed by the births of their children (3 boys followed by a girl). Inside flyleaf contains a collect & title page faces with titles & Printers (Oxford Uni) & dated M.DCCC.XXXVI (I have translated this to be 1836 but will stand to be corrected). The first couple & last couple of pages are foxed, and there is slight foxing to the very edges of the pages, but otherwise nice & clean. top of spine coming away (an inch maybe) bottom right leather missing showing hardboard. leather cover generally distressed but only what you would expect for this age. All pages sitting nice and tight. A really lovely example of a bible designed for everyday family use in the Victorian era. (From the 1881 census Anne was born in Plaxtol, Kent in 1826/7 and William in Abingdon, Berks in 1833/4. Two of their children were Frank E and Fanny M, both born in Loudwater, Bucks.

Victoria - Order of the Indian Empire. Grant of Her Majesty the Queen, Empress of India, conferring upon James George Scott, Esquire, Officiating Superintendent of the Northern Shan States, a Companion of the most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire ..., 5th May, 1892, handwritten document, signed at the head by Queen Victoria, with embossed paper wafer seal, folio, together with a covering letter from W.H. Dawson, Under Secretary to the Chief Commissioner and a printed copy of The Statutes of the most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire, 28pp, orig. printed boards, a little worn, slim 4to Scott, Sir James George (1851-1935). In 1875-76 Scott accompanied a punitive expedition to Perak, Malaya, as special correspondant of the Standard; in 1879 he went to Burma as headmaster of St. John's College, Rangoon, an Anglican Mission School, and in a tropical climate succeeded in introducing association football, hitherto regarded as impossible among so hot-tempered a people: it is now an established game. With the annexation of Upper Burma towards the end of 1885, the Indian Civil Service needed to be expanded at short notice and Scott was appointed to the Shan States. He spent the years 1886-1890 marching hard in all weathers to establish the British Rule in an area larger than that of England and Wales. Scott was appointed resident for the Northern Shan States at Lashio in 1891 and for the Southern at Taunggyi in 1902. He was charg‚ d'affaires at Bangkok in 1893 and 1894, and a member of the three boundary commissions which, between 1889-1900, delimited the Burma frontier along Siamese, French and Chinese territory. He retired in 1910.

A remarkable and lengthy autograph letter signed from Clem. A. Edwards, written on board HMS Ship 'Rattlesnake', Canton River, Bocca Titis, 22 March 1841, addressed to Henrietta and concerning family and political matters written during the first Opium War before the Treaty of Nanking, "... on the 25th we were at sea and arrived in six days at Hong Kon which was the Island selected for us to garrison but we found no signs of Europeans there, we were quickly ordered up the river, it being then determined to attack Canton but this was afterwards (I think very wisely) given up. It would not accord with the feeling of the age which is I am glad to say strongly inclined to philanthropy to burn a city the population of which is immense, and who are but little acquainted with the cause of the fight and quite incapable of influencing the state of affairs between us and their Governments. It is now supposed that the Emperor is the only preventitive to peace ...", and ending "I have just learnt that Captain Elliot has agreed to open a trade with the Commissioners who were appointed after we took the Bogue, that the Chinese accused Kehan of being bribed the Barbarians to surrender the forts, he is consequently being sent to Peking with an iron collar around his neck, we shall in a few days drop down to Hong Kon and there remain for a time it is nearly certain that we again move northward to take Amoy & Nankin. We will not touch Canton", 4 pp., folio, postmarks and seals, a complete typed transcript

Hong Kong was ceded to Britain in the Treaty of Nankin in 1842.

Your are bidding on a vellum document dated 1674. I am no expert on such items but believe it is an indenture on behalf of a man named Stephen Marshe. On the back of the document it reads Sealed and Delivered in the presence of, and then lists three names. It is a wonderful piece of documentation ,and to a person who collects and understands such items would be a rare and great addition. Considering the age of the item it is fair condition with all the writing still clearly visible. However where the document has been stored folded there is a tear. The document measures approximately 22 inches x 12.5 inches.

This beautiful small edition of “The Holy Bible” was published in 1842. It was printed by John W. Parker, the Cambridge University printer. The title page states that it contains the Old and New Testaments, “translated out of the original tongues; and with the former translations diligently compared and revised, by His Majesty’s special command”. It measures 3.75 x 2inches and the thickness is 2inches. The binding is black morocco leather, and the book fastens with a white metal clasp. The page edges are gold leaf, and the condition, in my opinion, considering its age is excellent. There is an inscription at the front which reads “Jams Strugnell, given him by his parents on his 21st Birthday-------Serch the scriptures for in them is eternal life”.

(BASKERVILLE PRINTING); THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS, AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH, ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND: TOGETHER WITH THE PSALTER, OR PSALMS OF DAVID, POINTED AS THEY ARE TO BE SUNG OR SAID IN CHURCHES. pub by JOHN BASKERVILLE, CAMBRIDGE, 1762, 8vo, Decorated Leather. For four centuries, The Book of Common Prayer has been one of the cornerstones of the Anglican Communion. This book is 240 years old, and printed by one of the legendary printers of the 18th Century, John Baskerville, whose elegant typeface is still used to this day. The effect of Baskerville's fine printing is to delight the eye. The spacing of the letters and the simple beauty of the type on the page makes his work instantly recognisable and easy to read. The craftsmanship of the binding is also a joy. The book retains its original unrestored binding, with bright gilt floral frame. The corners show some wear, as do the head and heel of the spine. The hinges also show some cracking. Nevertheless, the book retains its integrity and the boards remain tightly attached. The book was custom bound for one Grace Chandler, whose name the front board bears, along with the date 1765
