Banking. Group of documents 18th/19th c.,
including the sale of a chamber in Lincolns Inn and other property following
the bankruptcy of William Hamond, goldsmith and banker, plus a letter from
Thomas Coutts relating to victualling and navy bills purchased, a letter from
the Governor of the Bank of England relating to a Royal visit in 1853, a
letter from Thomas Baring head of Baring Brothers in 1890 and various other
documents. The deed of sale is particularly interesting in that Hammond was a
partner in the Banking firm of Atwell and Hammond which went out of business
in 1722 as a result of the South Sea Bubble, and his own bankruptcy would
probably have been triggered by this same event. |

March 19th 1811, binding James Barley as an apprentice to Thomas Holt, Master
Mariner, with details of the draconian terms, including a ban on gambling,
visiting ale houses and detailing payments of forty pounds to be made over a
three year period, some weakness in the folds, probably caused by the fact
that the apprentice had to have the document about his person at all times
while on board ship, with contemporary endorsements of his three payments to
verso, wood cut engraving of a sailing ship to the top left hand corner of
document, signature of Holt and mark of Barley to the lower right hand corner
Scarce. Documents of this nature rarely if ever appear on the market. A
particularly interesting aspect of this document is that the section
referring to parental consent has been crossed out, indicating that James was
either an orphan or from the poor house. |

Great
old Bible with original binding 1629, printers Bonham Norton and John Bill,
London. Size 7 by 9 inches by 3 inches thick. The Bibkle has woodcuts,
genealogies and an almanack. The binding is rubbed (so would I be if I was
380 years old!!) The book lacks possibly 8 pages at the front and also some
pages at the rear. The actual Bible otherwise looks complete. Book of Psalmes
1628 bound in at the back. Has songs and notation therein. The book has many
signatures applied in the 1600 and 1700s. Lost its clasps probably years ago.
Upper portion of spine missing. The pages are in the main in good condition,
not much damage at all. A very early Bible which we are sure will be loved
and has some very interesting information other than the actual Bible. From
images on ebay, names include Abraham Althahouse (1709) and Joseph Lubbock
(not dated). |

THEFT
OF NEGRO SLAVES ANTIGUA MUSTIQUE 1824. Antigua: An eight page manuscript
statement, possibly a draft, folio paper sized, in good clean and legible

Vernon that between 1790 and 1814 his father`s tenant, Justin Casamajor, sold
a total of 105 slaves belonging to the plantation and contrary to the terms
of the lease. These slaves, whose names are listed along with maternal
parent, were sold to Bryan Blake, Christopher Punnett and others; their issue

Hand
Written Exercise and Note Book circa 1770. This is a leather bound book of
about 120 pages containing mathmatical principles and exercises and poems etc
in copperplate handwriting by Honour Anthony (nee Hooke) who according to the
inscription was born May 4th 1754. Later in her life she obviously used the
blank pages as a notebook and it includes notes on her children, how to
concoct cures for various ills in sheep, cows, cattle and humans, rat poison
(arsenic and ox vomit - should work a treat!!), recipes for milk punch and
ginger wine, poems and prayers, together with some accounts of income.
Leather binding is stiffened and a bowed; hinges are cracked in a number of
places but binding is still sound and tight; corner missing on three pages. A
fascinating insight to what must have been an unusually well educated young
woman of her time |

Dickens (Sir Henry, 1849-1937, son of Charles

c.1919, inscribed by Sir Henry Dickens to John Wooldridge 'To Master
Wooldridge with every good wish for his success in life and in the hope that
he will guide himself by the teaching of Charles Dickens, from Henry Dickens,
K.C. and Common Serjeant of the City, Sept 20 1919', col. and b &
illusts., orig. cloth backed pictorial boards, 4to, contained with a letter
written by Sir Henry Dickens on headed notepaper to Arthur Wooldridge (John's
father), also dated September 20th 1919, 4 pp., folded, 'It was kind and thoughtful
of you to write to me and enclose a photograph of your bright looking little
son. I gave him my bouquet on the steps of St. Pauls because I was attracted
to his eager little face evidently full of interest in the scene and the
bigwigs passing in front of him...Don't let him read Dickens too early.
Children cannot well understand him; but as soon as he gets old enough press
upon him the advisability of reading all his books. The perusal will not only
give him infinite pleasure but will teach him humanity, true sympathy with
poor, suffering or distressed people and will give him a wish to do some good
in the world. I am sending him "Children's Stories from Dickens'"
which he can well understand...', with the orig. postmarked envelope (in pieces),
a photograph of John Wooldrige holding the posy (7cm x 4cm and laid down onto
modern paper), and various related newspaper cuttings. Each year at St. Pauls
Cathedral a service is held for the judges, Serjeants, Councels, etc. at
which they traditionally carry a posy of herbs to ward off infections. It
appears that on this occasion a boy, John Wooldridge, caught the eye of Sir
Henry Dickens and was presented with his posy. His father then wrote to Sir
Henry thanking him and father and son received the letter and inscribed book.

Books is proud to offer an antique bible dating back to the end of the 18th
century. It bears the original owner's inscription on the fep:
'Sushannah Hollier, Her book gave her by her grandfather in 1799'. On
one of the centre pages I found a dried leaf, presumably placed there many
eons ago. A poignant addition which remains with the volume. The tome is
titled: The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out
of the Original Tongues. Published:Oxford. Printed at the Claredon Press by W.
Jackson and W. Dawson. 1794/6? Overall condition is Good ++, internally some
pages are stained to edges or wider. Original covers rubbed - especially at
the edges. Folio, front and back boards all intact and original. A verse has
been stapled onto an fep, presumably by the owner, but in our view this adds
to the volume's interest. Original owner's name and address written in pen
and ink on back of rear cover. Internally very good. 305mm x 245mm (12"
x 9"). Binding is leather cover. |

FINAL
AGREEMENT FOR SALE OF 60 ACRES MEADOW AND PASTURE - 1791. FINAL AGREEMENT
MADE IN THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS, WESTMINSTER, 1791, BETWEEN JEREMIAH
CURTIS, QUERENT (THE PURCHASER), AND GEORGE PALIN, JOHN LARBY AND BRIDGET HIS
WIFE, DEFORCIANTS (SELLERS), FOR SIXTY ACRES OF PASTURE, MEADOW AND MARSH.
This document records the final judgement of the court in respect of the sale
of the land to Jeremiah Curtis. Unfortunately,
no location is mentioned although the handwriting is in typical court script
and difficult to read (so there may be a place mentioned that I have
missed!). This would appear to be the
"left-hand" indenture of fine which would have been retained by the
purchaser. The document has been folded vertically 4-5 times but is still in
relatively good condition. 50 by 22 cm. |

ultimately with the intention of establishing a National Gallery of British
Art. JMW Turner, Henry Thompson and James Ward were among the many painters
who stayed at Tabley. Today, important works by them can be seen in the rooms

West Indies - Antigua. Accounts inventory dated
1803, from Daniel Hill Jnr and Co of Antiqua to Lavington, Governor of
Antigua for the period March - December of that year, listing goods supplied
and services performed on behalf of the Governor, written in a fine legible
hand, with endorsement, a few minor tears, affecting a few words, 4pp, large
folio. An historically interesting document providing a picture of the life
of a Governor of one of the more important islands in the West Indies.
Lavington, born Ralph Payne, was most unusual as a West Indies Governor as he
was native to the territory, having been born in in St. Christopher, in 1739.
He was commissioned Governor May 10, 1771, resigned February 17, 1775, and
returned soon after to England where he had a parallel career. He was an M.P.
for Plymouth in 1762, Shaftesbury in 1769 and Camelford in 1774. He was
reappointed Governor of Antigua, January 20, 1799, and died on the island,
August 3, 1807, aged 68. |
