Bahamas. Autograph letter signed from R.B. Chisholm, Nassau, New Providence, 14th May 1820, to Colonel James Chisholm, "the change which is now nigh to take place in respect to the Legislators of these Islands - vizt. Governor Cameron to be succeeded (by appointment since Jany. last) by General Grant, the attorney (Wylly) to be removed to the island of St. Vincent and our Chief Justice (now President Munnings) is ordered home, both to be succeeded by professional gentlemen to be appointed by government and sent here from home... , In regard to business, its dulness is placed almost beyond the possibility of ever getting brisk, this stagnation is felt throughout all our West India possessions; we therefore sanguinely hope and wish a declaration of war between any two powers whatever" and asks Chisholm to say a word in his favour to Governor Grant re. mercantile affairs, two pages, 4to, together with unrelated ephemera including three lists of lands with improvements owned by William Long, Robert Nuckolls and Enoch Osborn in the state of Virginia, each listing land and slaves owned with prices and each signed by the landowner, one page, 4to/folio, plus English and French printed and manuscript items, mostly 19th century

British Guyana. List of Slaves belonging to Plantation Endraght and Mon Repos in the lawful possession of Frederick Cort, Attorney, of John Wilson, Executor, of Joseph Hamer, deceased, 31st May 1823, listing in tabular form the names of approx. 200 slaves including details of sex, colour, age, bodily marks, employment, condition and country, a little soiling, two leaves, and at head of first leaf the heading 'The Schedule above referred to', together with six further leaves only and presumably from the same document, numbered 8-11, 13 & 15, with the family name Hamer predominant, some soiling, all ruled in red with circular ink stamp 'Formaat-Zegel, Zuid Brabind' to left margins, 58 x 68 cm
Although the document appears incomplete, the list of slaves is complete and of interest in itself. This document was completed just weeks before the start of one of the most massive slave rebellions in the history of the western hemisphere. On 17th August 1823 nearly 12,000 slaves took up arms against their masters in what is known as the Demerara Slave Revolt. The rebellion started on Plantation Success, which belonged to John Gladstone (father of the future British Prime Minister, and whose name appears on page 9 of this document). It spread to about sixty plantations along the East Coast of what is now Guyana. Unlike the earlier rebellion of 1762, this one involved African and Creole slaves, and its leadership is attributed to a white man, Reverend John Smith. The slave list here includes both African and Creole (i.e. Demerara born) slaves, many of whom would have been involved in the rebellion in August. The revolt was very significant in terms of its impact on the anti-slavery campaign in Britain, helping attract attention to the evils of slavery and to the need to abolish it.

As for the Person you desire a Pention for, it is now too Late, I have sent the List to England about one month ago, but the next List that is made, she shall be Provided for in it", folds, browned, tear where opened ; and a small quantity of others, including copies (made in 1706-07) of Dutch official papers concerning a pension for Jeanne Jemblin, widow of Jacques Cavallier; petition from Ann le Bas to the Lord Treasurer, stating that the petitioner "has been obliged to fly from France for her religion"; and papers connected with the business and family of Peter Thellusson, a Huguenot merchant banker and man of business, whose eccentric and complex will led to an Act of Parliament, 1774-97, folds, browned, v.s., v.d. First mentioned signed by Galway with his left hand, with which he had learned to use after part of his right arm was lost below the elbow, at the siege of Badajoz in 1705. Massue de Ruvigny was elected deputy-general of the Huguenots in 1678 but, foreseeing the future left France for England after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Thereafter he served in the army under William III and Marlborough, in Ireland, the Low Countries and Portugal. He never forgot the plight of the Huguenots and did much to alleviate their hardship, often by petitions to the crown for pensions.

This is for the antique indenture that you can see in the image. There are two sheets which are attached and numerous seals and names, but the name RICHARD HART appears at the top of the document, and perhaps coincidentally the name HORNBY which also appears in the will which I am listing today, I do not know if there is any connection. The document is dated 1809 and the sheets each measure about 29" x 26". There is what appears to be an inkstain which makes reading part of the document rather difficult.

"Mary Miller departed this life August 4th, 1863 aged 9 years 16 days" and 2 other deaths. On the top and bottom edges of pages when the Bible is closed is written T. Miller. Old piece of history. Not in bad shape for being 161 years old! It is 7 1/2 inches long by approx. 5 inches across. 1 1/2 inches thick.

Pembroke ( Sir William Herbert, first Earl of, soldier and courtier, 1501?-70) Indenture agreement, exchange by Pembroke with Sir Giles Pole, of the manor of Renddell for the manor of Bullridge, D.s. “Penbroke” in capital letters, manuscript on vellum, 2 holes along folds, part of lower margin cut away not affecting text, folds, a few splash marks, 400 x 640mm., 31st July 1557.
Pembroke became brother-in-law to Henry VIII through his marriage to Anne Parr, younger sister of Catherine. In 1542 he acquired the former Benedictine abbey at Wilton, in later years a venue for some of Shakespeare’s plays.
“Aubrey, who preserves many anecdotes of the earl, describes him as ‘strong sett, but bony, reddish favoured, of a sharp eye, stern look.’ He adds that Pembroke could neither read nor write, but documents with his signature in capital letters are extant. Pembroke belonged to the new aristocracy, which the Tudor sovereigns created and encouraged, and his views in politics and religion were largely moulded by his personal interests; but he was a brave soldier, and faithfully served those with whom he allied himself.” - DNB.

Grenville ( Sir Bevil, royalist, 1596-1643) Last Will and Testament, D.s. “Bevill Grenville”, manuscript on vellum, torn and repaired affecting some words, some soiling, folds, lacks seal, 640 x 700mm., 10th April 1639/40.
Grenville was a prominent supporter of Charles I in the West Country. In 1639 the king raised an army against the Scots and Grenville volunteered for service, “‘I go with joy and comfort,’” he wrote, ‘to venture a life in as good a cause and with as good company as ever Englishmen did.” Grenville was killed in the early stages of the Civil War at Lansdowne, near Bath in an attack on Sir William Waller.
It would seem that Grenville had this Will drawn up in preparation for his service in Scotland.

A large and very ornate National Comprehensive Family Bible dating from circa 1890.

The outer cover / binding is black textured leather with an inset embossed shape on the front bearing the words "Holy Bible" in gold coloured print. It measures 13" x  10.5" x 4".  It is held closed by two brass hinges and has brass corner protectors on all four corners. Inside the front cover has been written "Emily Jane Mays July 6th -93". Judging by the style of writing and age of this bible this will be 1893 so the bible dates from at least then.

A beautifully inscribed header page states that the bible has commentaries by Scott & Henry and has been edited by the Reverend John Eadie. The publisher is Robins & Co, London. There are numerous illustrative picture plates throughout, some in wonderful colour, others in a sepia coloured pen and ink style. The pages for family details and photos have not been filled in as can be verified by the photos. Due to the age of this bible (at least 113 years old) the colour of the paper has discoloured slightly and there is the inevitable foxing and staining on some pages which includes a couple of the non-colour plates. This is mainly on the first few and last pages which also have some wear to them and are rather delicate in places. Also the bottom edge/corner of the bible (the pages not the cover) has a section measuring about 1" where the edges of the pages are slightly damaged and worn. There is evidence of this in some of the photos. The two brass corner protectors on the back cover have lost the brass pins which hold them on to the cover, although they stay in place when the hinges are closed shut. The front edge of the spine on the outside of the leather cover has slight wear to it. It is remarkably intact and in good condition for its age. The spine is not broken or come apart and I could not detect any loose or torn pages.

DORE, GUSTAVE et al; CASSELL'S ILLUSTRATED FAMILY BIBLE, THE HOLY BIBLE: CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS, WITH REFERENCES AND CONDENSED CONCORDANCE; pub by CASSELL, PETTER AND GALPIN; LONDON; EARLY EDITION; Large 4to; Full Morocco.

Circa 1860-1870. 32cm x 28cm x 11cm. Cassell's famous illustrated family bible is filled with over 950 woodcuts by various artists, and includes numerous full page engravings from the great bible illustrator, Gustave Dore. The book is bound in contemporary morocco with gilt and blind boards and spine. All edges of this lovely volume are gilt. Internally, the pages are mellowed. The book was issued in parts, and some of the parts have darkened more than others. The joy of this lovely book lies in its many illustrations. Besides the Dore works, there are vignettes and full colour plates. The integral woodcuts illustrate much of the flora and fauna of the Middle East, along with clothes, people, places and all manner of item from ordinary life. Makes the bible jump from the page. The binding shows some minor rubbing and marking, and is overall solid and clean. An excellent copy of this impressive work in VERY GOOD condition. This is a great example of a very large antique family bible which is in good condition considering its age. It has all its brass ornate clasps and corners intact and working. It has leather exterior with embossed gold writting on the front and back and measures over 13 inches long, 10 inches wide and 3 and 1/2 inches thick with gold edged pages and features lots of ornate pictures inside. The bible's heading page states that it is edited by rev. John Eadie and features commentaries of Scott and Henry and is published by Walter Leigh of London.

The front page reveals a signature of Joseph Robinson and also features 3 entries in the family pages in the births which are Susan Robinson born 1885, Hannah Robinson born 1894 and Joseph Robinson born 1902, all others are empty so could be used by the new owner if desired. There is some foxing to some pages which you would expect for a book of this age and some wear to the cover but overall is in pretty good condtion considering the first entry is 1885 which makes it at least 120 years old

This document is an Exchequer Order from 1716 (reign of George I). The Lower Court of Exchequer or Exchequer of Receipt was set up in medieval times to record the collection of the Kings taxes and distribute money under Acts of Parliament or under the Great Seal or Letters of Privy Seal. It was eventually abolished in the 19th century . Please see my auction item ' 1683 Charles II exchequer Order' for full explanation of these orders (see under Cheshire) This fragment is the lower right hand part of the order and is signed by the following: 'Torrington'  Thomas Newport  1st Baron Torrington (1680-1758)  ' R. Edgcumbe' Richard Edgcumbe (1655-1719). He was a neighbour and friend to Alexander Pope in Twickenham. Robert Walpole, Britain's first PM, described Richard as 'one of the honestest and steadiest men in the world' Both Torrington and Edgcumbe were Lord Commissioners of the Treasury after June 25th 1716 Also signed at bottom ' Ex[missing] per Halifax'.  George Montague, Earl Halifax( d 1739) was Auditor of Exchequer at this time. It is noted from the freference to 'Tonnage' that the money for this order was obtained from the duty on imported barrels or tuns of wine. The name 'Cowlett' refers to the Teller of the Exchequer who handed out the money on this Order Good condition. Affixed along two edges on card.
