seal and the witnesses have signed at the bottom. On the verso is a receipt
and the filing note. Measurements are approx. 14.5" wide and 11.5"

Wilkes
(John, 1727-1797, politician). Autograph Document Signed ('John Wilkes'), c. 1780,
being a piece of paper upon which Wilkes has written 'Additional Commissoners
of the Land Tax for the County of Middlesex, Robert Thompson, John Pass,
William Pardoe [?]Allatt, [signed] John Wilkes', approx. 10 x 17 cm,
window-mounted beneath a contemp. eng. oval portrait of Wilkes, framed and
glazed John
Wilkes was a major political agitator and founded the radical paper 'The
North Briton' in 1762. He stood for MP in Middlesex in 1768 and won. The
government declared the election null and void because Wilkes had been
imprisoned. Another three elections were called, Wilkes winning the second
and third times with the result voided each time by the government. On the
fourth occasion Henry Lawes Luttrell was declared the winner even though he
had polled fewer votes than Wilkes. Years later he stood again on the radical
programme and served as Middlesex MP from 1774 to 1790. |

An
interesting vellum Indenture dated 20th July 1801 during the reign of King
George III between: Joseph Bramah of Pimlico in the County of Middlesex Engineer
and William Branston of the Foundling Hospital in the Parish of Saint
Pancras. Pertaining to property in Little Guildford Street (being the fourth
house Northward from Bernard Street), Bloomsbury. With a small inset plot
plan detailing the site and adjoining properties. Other names mentioned
include: William Groves, Alexander Bernie, LeeWalters etc. Joseph Bramah was
an eminent engineer of the Georgian through to the Victorian era. In 1784 he
patented the Bramah safety lock, which was considered unpickable until
finally picked in 1851. Bramah went on to create a hydraulic press, a beer
pump, the four-cock, a quill sharpener, a working planer, methods of
paper-making, improved fire engines and printing machines and in 1806 he
patented a machine for printing banknotes, which was used by the Bank of
England. There are several web sites, which elaborate upon Joseph Bramah’s
achievements. There are also several group pictures of eminent engineers of
the era in the National Gallery, which include Joseph Bramah posing with
Brunel & Stephenson. Some interesting details regarding Joseph Bramah may
be gleaned from the following website:-
http://www.vauxhallsociety.org.uk/Bramah.html A sound document bearing the
usual storage folds. Comprising a single sheet of period vellum approx. 28” x
21½” with all text fully legible for transcription. Bearing two red wax seals

The Holy
Bible. Published in 1796 by R. Bowyer: London. Separate title page for the
New Testament. Measures 7" x 4". Text and covers tight, pages
clean. Expertly rebacked retaining the original full vellum covers with gilt
and blue decorations. Marbled endpages. All edges gilt. Manuscript note on
front blank reads: "This Bible belonged to Mrs. Swayne who died Nov. 4,
1895 - was interred with her son and daughters at Highgate on Saturday, Nov.
9, 1845." (1895?) The bible itself is rare enough, but what makes it truly
unique is the period foredge painting that appears under the gilt, it shows a
house in the background with a river and sailing boat in the foreground. Such
early original foredge paintings are quite rare. A lovely piece. From FreeBMD
the death of a Sarah Jane Swayne aged 91 was registered in Hackney
Registration District in Dec Quarter 1895, which is not far from Highgate. |

An
exceptional two volume victorian family bible. Bound in tooled morocco
leather with extensive decoration. Front and back covers have double tooled
borders, the outer being gilt. There is also a tooled gilt three-quarter
border inside the covers. The spines have extensive tooled gilt designs and
titles, with four raised bands. The "Holy Bible" titles are set on
a burgundy background. The pages are gilt on all edges. Volume
one has pages for recording births, deaths and marriages, enhanced by
illustrated borders. Four births and five deaths have been entered, spanning
the years 1849 - 1916, for members of the Hoadley family. The title page
reads "THE HOLY BIBLE with A Devotional and Practical Commentary by the
Rev R Jamieson D.D. & the Rev E H Bickersteth A.M." above an
engraving of Moses in the bulrushes. The Bible includes many full-page
"illustrative engravings on steel", protected by tissue guards.
Each Testament has its own title page. The Old Testament is extensively
commentated by Rev Jamieson, The New Testament by Rev Bickersteth. Both
volumes are in equally excellent condition. The pages are clean and tight in
a very secure binding. They have very slightly darkened with age and the
bottom edges show slight water staining. The tissue guards are intact but
have age darkened where they have been in contact with the engravings. These,
however, are clear and sharp and very lovely pieces of art in themselves. The
inside of the covers are marked, see photo. This appears to be where a paper
cover/dust wrapper has rested but would explain the excellent condition of
the outside. The covers, although very slightly scuffed and rubbed at the
edges, are remarkably clean and bright. The front of vol 1 has a small raised
lump, possibly foreign matter, and a hardly visible mark, as if water
stained. The
photos show all external surfaces and pages in typical condition. Each volume
is 380mm tall by 290 mm wide and 60mm(Vol 1)/70mm(Vol2) thick (approximate
sizes). These are very weighty books, totalling approximately 10Kg. From
the image (I have saved a copy) the names in the family register are: Births
- Henry Hoadley May 29th 1849; Cecilia Jane Hoadley Oct 31st 1850; Charles Comber
Hoadley Nov 8th 1852; Sidney George Hoadley Dec 30th 1854. Deaths: Henry
