This is
a one off unique legal document dated 1897 pertaining to lands in Nottingham
and Derby owned by His Grace the Duke
of Portland. This document conatins hundereds of names, to many to list!
First let me tell you that I am no expert in this field, but I will do my
best to describe the document as accurately as possible! Written in fancy
writing the document measures 22.5" X 18", has 8 pages and is made
of what I believe to be either stiff waxed paper or vellum which is
semi-transparent when held against a light. I am not good at reading this
style of writing, and while 100% of the writing is clearly readable I cannot
decipher the words! So bear with me
and I will do my best! Words that I cannot make out I will * next to. The
large writing at the top of the document "A Memorial to be registered of
An Absolute Order No 236 of the Board of Agriculture...." then writing
then gets smaller and there is lots & lots of it! So much detail, people such as Arthur Charles Greville, a
late Colonel in Her Majesty’s Army and & Edward Horsman* Bailey of
Middlesex! This side of document has an official red two shillings and six
pence stamp, which has silver metal the crown part (on the back of this page
is a black stamp with the crown and
letters VR* which seems to seal in the
silver metal on to the stamp on the front). The stamp on the
front and has the crown at the top and
is size 1¾” x 1¾” approx As to
the document content, as I said I am no expert, but it appears to be
concerning the land/estates of His Grace the Duke of Portland who owned a
considerable amount of land in the Nottingham and Derby. These lands are
detailed on all 8 pages and categorised by name of lands, Name of Landowner
(The Duke throughout the document), the names of the occupiers, the name of
the Parish, the name of the county and the total number of acres! This
information is also summarised on the last page. Also on the last page is a
table with twice yearly payments from 1898 to 1906. Totalling a massive
£41,720 plus shillings and pence! Also in this section there is a column
relating to repayment of a loan and interest to be charged! Confused? I am! Could
the winning bidder enlighten me? The document seems to be concerning the
rental of the land to others, but I am really NOT sure! It is signed by and
has the red seal of “Land Loan and Enfranchisement Company 18 60”, but I can
not decipher the signature! What ever
the context of the document it is original and in good condition with the
exception of being very stiff, from being folded up for 108 years! There are
some pencil marks on the document as to their nature again, I do not know.
Page numbers have been added to the bottom left corner in pencil. Two X at
the top of the first page as if to highlight areas which need reading before
a signature is taken! When the document is folded up for storage the back has
signatures of witnesses? |

This
document is an Abstract of Title to premises at Potters Bar, Middlesex. It is
22 pages long and has three coloured plans of the areas concerned. There is a
schedule referring to 29 items identified by name and number on the Tithe
Plan, these are mainly fields, woods and some buildings. Names mentioned are
Potters Bar Estates Ltd, Marsden, Willson, Wainwright, Phillips,Rowett, Bell,
Powell, Wadham, Valieri, Stavridi, Merson, Hayward, Sweet, Waller, Preston,
Fairburn. Streets mentioned are, The Avenue, Baker Street, Heath Road and
properties, Darkes Lodge and Westcroft. It is a document of much interest for
Local and Family historians. Unfortunately the front page is rather badly
torn, though not beyond repair, as I hope the photograph shows, because of
this there is a low start price. The coloured plans are in good condition with the usual folds and
the cover is a little grubby, mostly it in good condition and the
document measures roughly 340x420 mm

large vellum deed relating to the bankruptcy
of William Harpur Victualler of Hayes Middlesex and his creditors, nine in
all. The two principle creditors were
William Combes Harmansworth Brewer and Thomas Stump these and the other seven
affixed their names and seals. Of
special interest is the paper inventory fixed to the indenture listing all
Harpur's goods, very detailed showing every item in what was probably his
public house. Every part of the
premises is listed cellar, further parlour, first parlour, pantry, brewhouse
red chamber, right hand room, middle room, small back room, front room,
kitchen, bar, garden, yard and stable, sign, sign post. With a list of balance's due to Mr Harpur
from a John Brown who owed 10 shillings and 6 pence to Mr Bishop's soldiers
£2 10 shillings (heavy drinkers) and a mother Cottrell 1 shilling and
sevenpence halfpenny. An excellent
piece of history from 222 years ago.
Condition, outer sheet heavily darkened crossfolds on inventory weak,
an early repair to bottom (stitched with thread), 16 small crude seals,
signed to nine, it's written in a neat hand, one of the easiest to read I
have ever seen. A great piece of
history, the inventory is a marvellous piece showing exactly what was in the
public house when Harpur went bust over 200 years ago begs the questions why?
(a large amount of money over £100 was owed by a deceased gentleman by the
name of Furnier could this have tipped the scales? |
