VELLUM DEED concerning the release of CALDER & HEBBLE CANAL STOCK NO
RESERVE In 1758 powers were granted to a trust (later known as the Calder
& Hebble Navigation) to make the River Calder navigable from Wakefield to
Sowerby Bridge. Under the direction of John Smeaton, James Brindley and
Thomas Simpson, canal cuts were made in the river and the entire length was
opened for navigation in September 1770. This provided commercial access to
the upper Calder Valley and its textile and coal industries. This vellum deed
is dated 16th September 1797 and concerns the receipt by William Baldwin of
Lower Brook Street, Westminster and John Howarth of Halifax of 14 full shares
of £100 in the Calder & Hebble Navigation from Richard Royds. There are 2
red wax seals by the signatures and 2 blue revenue stamps. On the verso there
are witnesses' signatures and the signatures of representatives of the Calder
& Hebble Navigation. Size. The document is approx. 22.5" wide x
15" high. Condition. In very good condition with the usual folding

Southcott
(Joanna, prophetess, 1750-1814). An extensive collection of manuscripts
(drafts, copies and originals) put together by John Burton, a follower of Joanna
Southcott, dated between 1814 and 1835, the collection comprising approx. 115
well-filled pages, mostly folio and quarto, many by or in the hand of Burton,
some worn and dusty but clearly legible, some folded, a few showing signs of
having been mailed or hand delivered The majority of the documents date from
the mid part of the second decade of the century. There are copies of
Southcottian communications (messages received by Joanna Southcott from her
spirits) in both prose and doggerel verse. These were recorded by Ann
Underwood, her secretary and companion. The major interest, however, lies in
a number of more personal items. These include a letter from Burton to Joanna
Southcott in which he describes a number of his dreams at some length and
asks for her help with their interpretation; Letters to George Turner (a
Leeds merchant and prophet who managed to secure the allegiance of many of
Joanna's followers after her death) which reveal Burton's increasing doubts
about the authenticity of Turner's claims; A long and interesting letter of
moral advice from Burton to his daughter Jemima; Draft of a letter from
Burton to the editor of an unknown newspaper complaining of the way the press
write about Joanna Southcott's doctrines, etc., etc. John Burton has been
identified as John Pritchard Burton, a Confectioner, formerly of Shoreditch,
London, later near Six Mile Stone, Edmonton, London, who died at Stoke
Newington on 6th July, 1862 (copy of death certificate included). This
important collection of communications between the followers of Southcott,
which, circulated widely, gives an exceptional insight into the mental world
of those that succumbed to her beliefs. Although the majority of these pieces
are early copies or drafts, exhaustive research has shown that little
survives and none (if any) have ever been published. As such this collection
provides important source material for research into the movement at
"grass roots" level. A full typescript transcription of the
collection is provided with the lot. |
