[Millwall]  Counterpart Lease of Wharf & Buildings, 1854

This is the counterpart copy [ie signed by the lessors] of 'all that Wharf, Messuage or Dwelling House, Warehouse, Engine House, Chimney, Shafts, Buildings and Land thereunto situate and being at Mill Wall in the Parish of Poplar in the County of Middlesex....'.  A plan on the document shows the property bounded on the East by the Poplar and Greenwich Ferry Road [today's West Ferry Road] and on the West by the Thames.   Evidently the 21 year lease was terminated at an early date as the 3 pairs of seals have been rather crudely cut out.  Curiously they've been retained as sepaprate items inside the as-folded document.  Manuscript on 2 large parchment sheets.  (ref 680/12)

This document is the counterpart copy of a later lease of the above premises.   The lease appears to have been terminated in 1859.  It too has the signatures cut away but retained loose in the as-folded document.  It also has what seems to be the corresponding part (ie the bit with signatures & seals on) from the lease itself, and one can only assume the main body of the leae was destroyed in 1859.  (ref 681/22)

Antique deed in very good condition from the 8th year of the reign of King George.  Dated 1721.  Counties stated include Middlesex and Essex. This really is in great condition with the usual folds and creases with no tears.  Very neatly handwritten but the style I find difficult to interpret.  The names stated on the deed include Russell, Dixon, Fitzgerard and Windey, and the deed is signed by Wendey and Dixon.  Wax seals still present and there are three blue sixpenny stamps down the side of the deed.  I generally only deal in books and have described this as best I can.

Old English Indenture being a Deed of Assignment dated 3rd July 1845 between Sir Robert Heron of Stubton in the County of Lincoln, Baronet and the Reverend Henry Corrie of Blatherwick in the County of Northampton, Clerk (1) Henry Nevile of Walcot Park in the County of Northampton, Esquire (2) and Nathaniel Bridges of Red Lion Square in the County of Middlesex, Gentleman (3).  The document assigns all the messuages or tenements, cottages, pieces or parcels of land hereditaments, and all and singular other the premises described in a Deed of Indenture of Settlement for a term of 1000 years, namely land in Spridlington in the County of Lincoln. This large deed of Indenture measures 28.5" x 24" and weighs 134 grammes.  It has the original Government stamp duty seal on the face of 2 pages with the original white Revenue stamps on the reverse sides and the 4 wax seals of the parties are extremely well preserved.  The Deed has endorsed upon the back of the second page an Indenture of Surrender and Re-Assignment dated 11th June 1862.  It has a Government Revenue seal on the face of the Indenture and the white stamp preserved on the other side.  It has the original 8 wax seals on the face of the document which are in perfect condition.  The whole document for its age is in remarkable condition.  Some of the handwriting is slightly faded with age but is readable.  It is an ideal piece of English history for collectors of old hand written documents.

MANUSCRIPT Deed HACKNEY MIDDLESEX Cass to Smith 1867. from the reign of Queen Victoria MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT This being THE TITLE DEED OF LEASE OF 13 AND 15 BENTHAM ROAD SOUTH HACKNEY MIDDLESEX BETWEEN CHARLES JAMES JOHNSON, HENRY WHITE, JOHN CHRISTOPHER CHRISTIE, GEORGE BONE, HENRY GRANT BAKER AND CHARLES BARBER BEING A MAJORITY OF TWO THIRDS OF THE TRUSTEES OF SIR JOHN CASS CHARITY OF THE FIRST PART TO ALFRED SMITH AND JOB SMITH OF WORSHIP STREET FINSBURY IN THE COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX AND SARAH SMITH OF HORNSEY. SIGNED BY JOHN CHRISTOPHER CHRISTIE WHO WE THINK IS ONE THE CHRISTIE FAMILY OF AUCTION HOUSE FAME.

The Sir John Cass Foundation dates formally from 1748 and 1998 marked its 250th Anniversary. The origins of the Foundation are to be found in the early years of the eighteenth century during the turbulent and complex politics of the reign of Queen Anne. The educational establishments which have been supported and managed by the Foundation date back to the Stuart Restoration period. The history of the Foundation touches upon education in and around the City of London at almost every stage, ranging from infants schools to university level, and representing an historical microcosm of the development of English education over more than three centuries. In more recent years the Foundation has broadened its support for educational and youth activities and has also commissioned and funded research into educational issues. It continues to fulfil the role for which it was originally established in 1748, managing the land and properties with which it was endowed and has developed, and seeking to serve the educational and other needs of the young population of inner London..
