London and Newcastle FIVE LETTERS From George Gilroy at Bow to his father John Gilroy of Newcastle (millwright), dated London, 29 March 1841 - 28 July, 1843. Each letter approx. two pages, in a neat hand, with integral address panel on conjoint leaf, with postmarks and wax seals. 1841-3. £90.00 ¶ He complains of the difficult conditions 'trade is very slack here now & has been out for 3,4 & 6 months..... I drew my money out of the Savings Bank thinking these rumours of wars would depress the funds.... would you advise me to speculate in a railway share for I have got about œ85 and I should like to make it work as well as me....' Later letters mention his buying a Great North of England Railway share for œ13.00, enquiring whether the 'Edinburgh Railway is to come by the East coast or West....'. In August 1841 he joins a drawing school '2 guineas a quarter', but in May 1842 is still out of work 'I have had only 5 days work in the last 15 weeks and no prospect of anything doing....' Later he considers going to India as an engineer in the East India Co., quoting the rates of pay, etc.... 'I find the Sierra Lione man has 3 guineas per week... so you see father I have asked less than the 3d class engineers.... my friend advises me as trade is so dull to take a little less....'

Cockfighting.-. The Rules and Orders of Cocking, manuscript on vellum, 3 small hand-painted illustrations of cockfighting at head, ruled in red, slightly soiled and yellowed slightly obscuring text in one or two places, 147 x 145mm., "These rules have been sanctioned by Mr ?Ardefoit", London, The Pit, St. James Park, 4th December 1756. £500 - 700 A fine example of an extremely rare survival.Rules: "1. All Cocks shall fight with fair hacket and noses shorn … 4. All dues to be paid & all wagers laid before the cocks be put in the Pit … 8. Any man who loseth a wager but payes not … shall be put … and hung up to the eaves of the Pit that … men may see him and there he shall remain until the end of the session when he shall be cut down."Cockfighting or Cocking was a well established sport in Britain since its introduction by the Romans. Originally from India, China and Persia the practice of pitting game-cocks for betting purposes reached its zenith in England from the reign of James I to the end of the eighteenth century and declined due to the popularity of horse racing.

DUDSON (Edward, citizen and draper of London, and his wife Anne, sole daughter and heir of the late Isaac Colfe, Clerk, of Chadwell, Essex) Indenture, whereby the Dudsons undertake to ‘levy a fine’ to John Morris of London, Scrivener, that is, by a ‘final’ process in the Court of Common Pleas, to grant him nominal possession of a dwelling "in Heron alias Herne neere Reculver in .. Kent and with all outbuildings .. yards orchards gardens .. arable land and pasture .. by estimacion seaven acres .. late in the occupation of Robert Chilton, a cottage, garden and orchard &c, now or late in tenure of [blank] Tolson", with other freeholds in Herne,  for the uses specified,  namely to the Dudsons for life, thereafter his lawful heirs on her body, in default her heirs of the body, or finally his heirs for ever,  with John Morris’ original bill of charges,  14 items totalling £3 10s, paper, 7" x 6", receipted and signed by him the 20th April 1654, the main deed signed and sealed by both Dudsons, witnesses’ signatures on verso, vellum, 12¾" x 20", 20th January 1653 (old style), new style 1654, The purpose (see line 4) is "the barring of all estates tayle and remainders" on the property, to free it from any former conditions on its inheritance. The result is to keep it in the Dudsons’ family. Solicitors and other legal officials commonly played John Morris’ role in the process. A note on the verso reads "The evidence for the 2 houses and Land at Hearne".  The bill  includes Morris’ attendance at court, 6s 2d "to the Chir", the Chirographus, an officer of the Common Pleas who engrossed fines, 4s 6d for the (two) Indentures, of which the present is one, and 13s 8d "for my Mr for wrytings", probably Robert Abbott, Scrivener, two of whose servants witness the deed. Accounts accompanying deeds thus early are rare.
