ruled in red throughout, original calf, rubbed, upper joint small tear, lacks
head of spine, folio, 1st May 1631 - 9th August 1644. £600 - 800 "A
Bill of 200 P sterling bearing date the 9th of August 1644. drawn on me John
Answorth at 40s 3d payable to Ralfe Perrot or his Assigns the some of 400l
and 2 pound 10s ?flemish." Heads of the legal part include: "Cooke
Inquisiones"; "Journal by Coppy of Court Roll";
"Copyhold"; "out of a discourse uppon the Commission of
Bridewell"; "Tenures", copyhold, "Copyholders belonging
to the Mannor of Amersham taken from Walter Tredway … Baly to the Earle of
Bedford". If John Answorth was the compiler of these notes and accounts
he was clearly a wealthy individual, probably a London merchant with a
business connection to the Earl of Bedford and through him with Sir Walter
Tredway and "the mannor of Amersham". Answorth also lists land
owned at Wapping, Harmondsworth and property in the City, "ffleet
streete house" and "ffeterlane". One of the first entries is
an account of an unlooked for honour: "May 1st 1631 I was summoned by a
warrant to appear at the Coiunsaile board to compound for the order of
Knighthood. I deferred apearing as long as possibly I could without running
into a contemt. When I appeared my answer nay I had no land till two years
after the Kings Coronation [Charles I] and was then the kings ward for were I
payed a greate somme. Uppon this answer they turned me over to into the
Exchequer whereof I should be returned by the sherife … . It is best to
temporize and deferre a busines of this nature as long as without danger …
". In the early years of the reign of Charles I Commissions for
Compounding for not taking a knighthood at the Coronation of the king was a
lucrative source of revenue for the government. By 1635 the money raised from
such fines amounted to #173,537. An early investor in the East India Company
he lent #1300 at 6 per cent in 1637. Other debts owed or owing and people
with which he has business dealings include "Brother ffrancis",
Lord Maltravers ["11th of februar 1636 hath in all to dispose for my
use" #600], Earl of Bedford (Francis Russell, fourth Earl, 1593-1641)
[as of 26th May 1637 Answorth owed Bedford #3800], Sir Edward Savage,
"Mr Shalcross", Walter Tredway, Alderman Some, "Customers Sir
Abraham Dawes and Sir John Jacob". For the month of February 1636
Answorth was owed by "Gentlemen and others" #7300. |

other part. The document concerns the sale for £540 of a house with a barn in
the parish of Hampstead, Middlesex then in the occupation of William
Freelove(?) together with lands in Hampstead and Chelsea (spelt Chelsey in
the document) known as Hilborne Woodes and Flower Hill with a further 2
cottages being, in total, 52 acres 3 roods and 27 perches. (How much would 52
acres of Hampstead fetch today???) There are 2 vellum seal tags, one with a
virtually complete seal still remaining and, on the verso, a notation in
fancy calligraphic and decorated script in, I think, Latin. Size. The
document is approx. 27" wide x 17" high. Condition. In exceptional
condition with the usual folding creases. |

of Annulment of Marriage. Scarce manuscript vellum grant of 13th July 1646,
from the Bishop of London, granting the annulment of the marriage, daughter
