Original
- Hand Written Diary. Dated - 20 of October 1763 To 30th of June 1764 The Christian
Experiences Of Elizabeth Kingsley (Later Mrs. Symonds.) Description : An
Unusual Unique item . I have been told that Elizabeth Kingsley was a relative
of the author "Charles Kingsley" who wrote the "Water
Babies". Presumably a cousin (removed), or (Great) Aunt. Please let me
know, if you know the relationship. (description continues after 1st scan) I
have read through the book, and will attempt to provide a precis of it's
contents. Elizabeth was a devoutly religious young woman, obviously of means,
and still living at home with her parents in London. There is a great deal of
insight into her "attempts" to follow her teachings from the Bible
and her teachers. She writes of the sermons of such preachers of the
Evangelical Revival as Madan, Romaine, Venn, Brittain, Langford, Hogg, Brewer
(at Pinner's Hall) and others.
("Such meetings were held regularly in the ministers’ houses and those
of a growing number of Christian nobility, including Lady Francis Shirley,
the Count and Countess of Huntingdon, Countess Delitz and Lord
Dartmouth." ref. google.com ) Interestingly ,she also speaks of visits
to "Wesley's" chapel, and attending a Methodist meeting, though not
a "follower". There are some more general observations on life, including
"The Lord Mayor's Parade", a few sections on their servants,
including one who had died after leaving their service " a fallen woman
". Illnesses in the family, and more...
Though for me the most interesting thing is her outlook on life. A few
quotes to illustrate - "I am at present slothful in religion, but I have
no power to do anything: I can't help my self. My spiritual disease rages and
gets head apace, and at the same I find my strength decay" "A very
stupid frame I have been in today; but O yet blessed be the Lord, he has not
left me for some weeks past, to those great terrors which sometimes I
have....." "This has been a blessed day to my soul, my heart has
been fill'd with the love of Jesus..........." Condition : Softbound handstitched book with light
blue covers which are a little dirty and worn. Internally the majority of the
pages are clean. A couple of pages have tears with loss, though one was torn
before the diary was written , a couple of closed small tears elsewhere.
Signature of (Elizabeth Emery , Bedford or Bidford) on inside cover. Book
Measures Area 8 x 6 1/2 inches - 20 cm
x 16cm. Unpaginated - 144 pages. Overall GOOD + There were 4 images from this
diary available on request. |

1774 LETTER TO SCOTLAND YARD SEAL POSTMARKS. Lovely letter. This
came with the deeds that I am selling. It was posted to ** WILSON ESQ,
SCOTLAND YARD, WHITEHALL, LONDON. It is from a man named THOMAS DUNCOMBE
whose family crest is clearly seen on the black wax seal on this envelope/letter.
He resided at BERKHAMPSTEAD ST. PETERS. On the front is a manuscript postal
charge 3. On the rear is a Bishops mark? and a two line BERKHAMSTEAD
postmark. Berkhampstead is in Hertfordshire I believe. The letter relates to
Mr Duncombes wine purchases and mentions a Mr John Loveday, Wine Merchant, 10

MANSION HOUSE - NATEBY HALL AND WINDMILL AND KILNE. INFORMATION FOR
COLLECTORS: Nateby Nateby township is
said to have been the tenure of the family of Travers of Tulketh to as far
back as the reign of Henry I. Laurence Travers, who lived soon after that
reign, was succeeded by eleven generations. Nateby appears to be in the
possesion of William Travers in 1524 and 1559, and Richard Travers is
recorded as holding Nateby Hall in 1557. The greater part of the township was
divided at the time of the duke of Hamiltons sale, the balance being sold to
a number of people by Mr. Hand around 1800. At Nateby in the "Over
Wyre" district between Garstang and the parish of Pilling, a large
concerted research programme which involves several universities is being
undertaken right now. This came about because of the discovery of a Roman
road under a lawn in a private garden; it appears to point to a major site of
ancient occupation which had previously only been guessed at. The archeologists
are reported to have identified several woodhenges; a large fish pond, many
underground chambers and several roads, both Roman and pre-Roman. GUARANTEED

ANTIQUE VELLUM DOCUMENT. VELLUM DOCUMENT DRAWN UP IN 1879 BEING A
LEASE OF POSSESSION. BETWEEN SIR WILLIAM PALLISER OF EARLS COURT SQUARE IN
THE COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX AND CHARLES HUNT OF LANGBRIDGE ROAD KENSINGTON. LEASE
FOR DWELLING HOUSE. SIGNED BY SIR WILLIAM PALLISER. Converted guns When
rifled artillery first came into the service there were a great many smooth
bore guns in store. For the sake of economy it was advisable to find a means
of utilising these guns as rifled muzzle loaders. The material was weak
however and it was necessary to find a method of strengthening them. A
successful system was finally adopted in 1863. This was proposed by Sir
William Palliser.1 To distinguish these converted guns from the the newly
produced guns they were classified as follows:- All reworked and converted
guns = R.M.L. All new guns = M.L.R. Over 2,000 of these converted guns were
made. There are are two patterns of 64 pr. converted guns, both converted from
smooth bore cast iron guns. These are the 64 pr. of 71 cwt. (converted from the
8-inch shell gun) and the 64 pr. of 58 cwt. (converted from the 32 pr. of 58
cwt.) Some 80 pr. 5 ton guns were also converted on the same system. The
Palliser System The system of conversion to rifled, (R.M.L.) was the Palliser
one, which consisted of boring out the cast iron gun to form a casing, and
then inserting a coiled wrought iron barrel, kept in position by an iron
collar and a screw plug under the trunnions. GUARANTEED ORIGINAL AND IN GOOD

Old
English hand written Deed of Assignment dated 12th August 1788 (executed in
the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third- Prime Minister at the time,
William Pitt - son of Earl of Chatham) by John Goldsborough Ravenshaw and
Elizabeth, his wife to Edward Wilmot. It refers to a messuage in Cannon
Street, London being the corner house in the west end of Crooked Lane in the
Parish of St. Michaels. It consists of 4 pages and a back sheet. It measures
30" x 26" and it's weight is approximately 192 grammes. For its age
it is in good condition. The back sheet is a little stained, due to storage
and it is slightly thin on one or two of its folds. It has been stored in the
same Safe for over 20 years. An ideal piece of English history for collectors
of old hand written documents. The signatures and the 4 wax seals appear to
be in the near same condition as when they were first impressed upon the
document nearly 215 years ago. The 4 original Revenue stamps (sealed and
impressed on the front of the pages with the original black stamps on the
back) are again in good to fair condition. |

On old
original 1827 rent agreement document between The Govenors of St.
Bartholomews Hospital London and Thomas and Jacob Parker for the lease of
Swan Yard Livery, stables and houses in Hosier Lane. Document states that the
rent shall be £55 per year for 61 years with a land tax of £6.16. This is a
really interesting two page document with a map of the site. Each page
measures approx. 30" by 23" and comes folded with some staining
which doesn't in anyway effect the excellent clarity of the written text or
of the map. The document must contain a couple of thousand words, has 3 signatures
and 2 blue seals attatched to the document and one large wax seal (crumbling)
which comes with the plans. This really is an interesting piece of history
concerning the world famous St. Bartholomews Hospital which tells of many
things including the planning restrictions for example, '....and shall not at
any time during the said term hereby granted alter changes or vary the
elevation or front of the said tenement...' This would make an excellent
addition to any collection and in addition would provide excellent historical
and research information. |

1770 LAND INDENTURE. You are bidding for a large vellum Indenture which was
set down on the '......twenty fourth day of October in the tenth year of the
reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God.....' This fanatastic example of a Land Deed
details the transaction between Robert Boyle of London, and James Wood of
Durham. Measuring approximately 20 X 36 inches, this document in very good
condition, considering it is over three hundred years old!! The script is clear and crisp. There are no tears or rips, although there
is a small hole on the right hand margin of the document, between lines 34
and 35. However, this does not
interfere with the actual script, which is still readable. There are four wax seals which are wholly
intact, together with the Revenue Stamp for one shilling and sixpence. |

Rare
and fairly unique scroll document detailing the Coat of Arms and heraldic
devices entitled to be worn by the family of one John Nightingale. This being
the response by the Royal Order to the gentleman in question (at least I
think this is the case - being a serf its all a bit above my head!) - John
Nightingale of the parish of St Clement Danes in the County of Middlesex. The
document is dated 1824 and signed by Sir George Naylor Principal King of Arms
and Ralph Bigland and Edmund Lodge both Kings of Arms. Details of the devices
are given both in words and in the beautifully hand painted Coat of Arms at
the top left (apart from the seal to the left this document is all hand
done). The scroll came in a leather covered wood box which has seen better
days though still retains the Royal Arms to the lid. The scroll itself is in
good condition tho' it has suffered some water/moisture damage at some time
in its history - particularly to the right edge and top corner. The text is
unsmudged and the Coats of Arms and Royal badges /warrants (?) are in good
condition. No holes or tears to the document. The ribbons at the bottom are a
bit stained and one is nearly in half but still hanging in there! Scroll
measures approx 20 inches square and is I think made of parchment. |

Third year of the Raigne of our Soveraigne (... note the old English
spelling....)... Lord George by the Grace of God of Great
Britain...(....appears to read "ffrance and"...) Ireland King
Defender of the ffaith..P Anno Domini 1716....BETWEEN William Withers of the
City of London Knight and one of the Aldermen of the same City of the first
part Elizabeth Turner of London Widow and John Turner of London Esquire
eldest son of the said Elizabeth Turner of the second part and William
Withers of London Esquire of the son and Heir apparent of the said William
Withers .... The Deed was made in consideration of a Marriage Settlement. The
consideration monies were 5 shillings. The Deed relates to (amongst other
things).... "All That messuage or tenement situate in Cannon Street
London being the corner house on the west end of Crooked Lane in the Parish
of St. Michaels Crooked Lane, London...." The document consists of 3
pages and a back sheet. It measures 33" x 25" and it's weight is
approximately 315 grammes. For its age (nearly 300 years old) it is in
reasonable condition. The back sheet is rather dark due to storage and there are
a few dark stains on the second page. It has hardly seen the light of day for
the past 2 decades having been stored in a Safe. The signatures and 5 wax
seals are exceptional taking account of the age of the document. The 3
original Revenue stamps (sealed and impressed on the front of the 3 pages
with the original black stamps on the reverse) are near perfect. |

Cholera
epidemic, 1849. Trainee doctor's diary and journal, kept by Edward Ross Prance
(born c. 1830) of Stonehouse, Devon, between 1848 and 1852, detailing daily
commonplaces such as surgery times, the weather, etc., interjected with a
lengthy essay on happiness, and continuing more interestingly with a move to
London to observe at the London Hospital in Mile End, followed by diary
details of post mortems and operations, with much mention of the cholera, an
epidemic of which swept London in 1849, then return to Ivy Bridge in Devon,
before returning to London for medical exams, plus touristic mentions of the
opening of the Great Exhibition of 1851, visits to Greenwich and the Tower,
etc., then obtaining his M.R.C.P.E. and the diary finishing on 2 May 1852
with his appointment as Assistant Surgeon on board H.M.S. Impregnable at
Devonport, some medical student notes, partial index, in all approx. 160pp.
in a legible hand, orig. limp morocco, worn with sellotape repairs and lower
board det., 8vo The diary is interesting for showing the details of a young
doctor working in London during the cholera outbreak which began in 1848 and
which reached epidemic proportions the following year; between July and
October of 1849 the disease claimed 14,000 victims in the metropolis alone.
While the diary is sporadic with some long gaps, it gives an insightful
picture into the routines of a young doctor in Victorian Devon and London. |

A note
book in a full leather binding, with faded tooled pattern on front and back
cover. There are small punch marks where ribbon or cord would have tied front
and back covers together. Some rubbing and bumping to corners and spine but
overall in excellent condition for age. Pages hand cut. This book has very
obviously been lovingly stored for most of its life. I believe this item to
be an extremely rare and important item of Quaker (and British history) it
consists of over 240 hand written pages, in ink, which I estimate from
content, the style of binding and the quality of the paper to date from the
late 1690’s or the very early 1700s. There is no obvious inscription to
identify the writer but the name M and M Lucas appears at the top of the
first page, in a different hand. The book begins “The work of Grace begins
where sin began” and continues in sermon form for 18 pages. The writer then
describes George Fox, as he knew him in the following terms, “George Fox was
an instrument in the hand of the Lord in this present age which he made use
of to send forth into the world” and “I knew him well, conversed with him
often, observed him much, loved him dearly, and honoured him truly” This
praise continues for several pages. Finally the writer states “In White Hart
Court by Grace Street? London on the 11th day of the 11th month 1690 he was
in his testimony as a fixed star in the firm of Gods” and “On the 13th
instant between the 9th and 20th hour in the night he quietly departed this
life in peace” He describes Fox’s funeral near Burnhill Fields. Most of the
rest of this work records particular events in George Fox’s life in Fox’s own
words. These appear to come from George Fox’s own writings, and are written
as Fox would have written them. It describes his birth in 1624 at Drayton in
the Clay, Leicestershire. It describes Foxes conversion of a witch. It
details Fox’s imprisonment all over Britain, “ I being thrust into Carlisle
dungeon a filthy nasty place it was where men and women were put together and
the prisons so lousy and one woman was almost eaten to death with lice” It
describes how they were supporters of the King and because of this his
followers were persecuted, beaten and killed for their beliefs, many examples
of which are quoted. He makes many references to Cromwell and specific
soldiers in Cromwell’s army. It describes Fox’s trip to America and his
attempts to convert the Indians. I could go on and on. At first I believed
this to be a diary written by a follower of Fox, as much of it is in a form
of shorthand, however after some research I now believe this was written
shortly after Fox’s death by either a follower or student of Fox who
obviously knew him personally and well. For some reason, possibly because
Fox’s writings were banned or hard to get, our author chose to write out the
most important parts of Fox’s life and mission adding his own text and
anecdotes throughout, possibly as an act of penance or in respect for a man
he or she obviously cared for. Because of the nature of this item and the
difficulty I have describing the contents I will gladly answer any questions
you may have. I am also happy to scan any pages on request. However, as this
book has been carefully looked after and is in excellent condition, I do not
feel inclined to manhandle it too much. From the image a Tho: Ellwood is
named in the text. |

renting the property to another, we are not certain of this as it is
difficult to read as they are written in old English and calligraphy. There
