Up
for auction is one of the more incredible items I have had the pleasure of offering,
this being a 12.5 FOOT long scroll containing the marriage documents of Anne
and Edmond Stafford, married in the 28th year of the reign of King Henry the
Eighth. "Kynge henry ye eight" is referred to several times in the
document as the monarch. That would date this to 1537. Much of this amazing
document is in ENGLISH and forms a record of the marriage including articles
of agreement, indentures, a final agreement, and other documents. All penned
in a single hand with a registrars notation at the very
end. The document is described in a docket as an "inquisition"
taken on the death of Robert Bathwell. The parties aside from the bride and
groom are Robert Bathewell of Bathewell (?) in the County of Lincoln, a
Gentleman, who gives the marriage Dower, and William Stafford referred to
both as a Gentleman and an (E)squire. It should be
noted that there was a very prominent family in Tudor England, the Staffords,
and this may relate. Obviously the parties were significant due to the
massive amount of legal documents here. The scroll which is 12 inches wide is
made up of paper sheets and nicely stitched. The first three feet with some
foxing and loss at margin but after that improves significantly. Towards the
last few feet of the scroll it is folded every 1/2 an inch or so. Nice
watermark of a hand and a crown on many of the sheets. |

Clayton County Iowa where Samuel was a Farmer Results of the research will be
included. The P of A is written on 3 pages of a 4 page vellum document, the

inherited it from one John Hunt of Sutton St Edmonds Lincolnshire, who in
turn inherted it from William Rowley of Grantham Lincolnshire. It is written
on 3 pages of untrimmed parchment and wrapped in a 4th sheet. There are notes
written on the back of the third sheet which would appear to come from
another case. The outer page is quite grubby but the inner pages are in good
condition and easily readable. |

This
is a rarely found apprenticeship indenture dated 9th may 1871.It is binding Johnson
sharpe of Lincoln as an apprentice blacksmith for the term of 4 years. He was
a lucky lad as he was bound to his father George sharpe. Most lads that were
lucky(loosly used term) enough to become bound apprentices did not have happy
nice lives in those days, they realy worked as slaves under cruel masters. This
indenture tells you all the things he had to promise not to do in those 4
years, and what he would get in return,It makes fasinating reading. It has a
complete Ten shilling blue stamp with silver melted onto it.It is stamped
Lincoln 19-4-70.It also has 3 red wax stamps on green cloth woven into the
side of it.It is not in perfect condition,as in creased where its been
folded, stains and dirty, but is fully readable, and a nice little piece of
Victorian history. |

RARE
VELLUM DEED OF SEPARATION BETWEEN HUSBAND & WIFE 1878 These unusual four
vellum documents are a Deed of Separation and Indenture dated 1878. Legal
separation between a husband and wife in the 19th Century was unusual, but
not unheard of. However, such things tend to get quietly buried in family
histories, and later generations are often unaware of their existence.
Consequently it is rare for an actual document of legal separation to be
offered for sale. Front of the Deed reads: DEED
of SEPARATION between Mr
William Pearson and Betsey his wife Dated
30th March 1878 Mr
William Pearson } to }
Deed of Covenant Mr
Charles Harvey & anor } There
is a later addition underneath for the appointment of a new Trustee, dated
25th February 1899 Extract
from the deed: "....said
Mr William Pearson will not at any time hereafter
require or by any means whatsoever compel to cohabit or live with him, or
institute any legal proceedings or take any other steps whatsoever for that
purpose, and will not in anywise molest or interfere with the said Betsey
Pearson in her manner of living or otherwise...." The
deed seems to separate their finances, and appoints Charles Harvey and one
other Trustee to oversee this. William
Pearson seems to be liable for all of the legal costs of the separation .... one of the
conditions of which seems to be that she does not reside within 100 miles of
Newcastle Upon Tyne. The
document speaks of "....unhappy differences,
and they have consequently agreed to live separate from each other..." There
seems to be property involved, and as far as I can make out, in amongst the
'herewiths' and 'aforesaids' Betsey was to "....receive and take an
annuity or clear yearly rent charge of £50...." The
document details the property concerned, which was in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
The document is signed and sealed at the bottom by William Pearson, Betsey
Pearson, Charles Harvey and John Pearson In 1899 with the appointment of a
new trustee, it was signed and sealed by Richard Harvey and Charles Harvey
and witnessed by a Boston, Lincolnshire solicitor. The deed has a ten
shilling embossed stamp and a crown rubber stamp for Newcastle Upon Tyne
22.2.78 On the back of the deed there is some quite indistinct writing in
ink, dated 1880. William Pearson is by then deceased, and his affairs have
passed through the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice |

GENUINE
ANCIENT DOCUMENT DATED 1685 THIS DOCUMENT IS A LEASE OF LAND & PROPERTIES
BETWEEN Thomas Dixon (A FULLER) & Mary HIS WIFE AND Thomas Dixon (THE
SONNE) IN HALTHAM IN THE COUNTY OF LINCOLNSHIRE THE DOCUMENT STARTS :- "...This
Indenture made the ffifth day of May in the ffirst yeare of the reigne of our
Sovereigne Lord James the Second by the grace of god of England Scotland
ffrance and Ireland King defender off the faith....in the yeare
of our Lord God according to the computation of the Church of England One
thousand six hundred eighty and five." This
is a legal document handwritten in sepia ink with quill pen. It is written on
Vellum (calf skin). I have not had the time to translate very much of this
document due to its size, but the writing is exceptionally clear and can be
completely translated with a little time and effort. It is written in Old
English in a clear hand and the old spellings are fascinating. The document is in good condition, a bit
grubby with age but totally legible. There are no tears or holes in the folds
which is surprising considering its age. There is additional writing and
signatures on the back. This document still has its seal tags, here the
witnesses have signed. There are still remains of the original wax seals too.
