309

Multiple sheet vellum document of some twenty sheets 1783, relating to the sale of the manors and lordships of Maiden Earley, Berks, together with all the lands of the manor, The document sets out the sale of the manor, listing the land, farms etc together with another multiple sheet vellum indenture dated 1878 made under the Settled Estates Act, detailing the sale of the Maiden Early Estate, with a large fine hand drawn map of the estate. It is unusual to have two documents from different ages relating to the same estate, and as such the present documents will doubtless provide local historians with considerable information not only on land holding of the estate but how the estate changed in almost 100 years. The Maiden Earley Estate is now the modern day Early area of Reading, straddling the A329

“A Record of the Redes of Barton Court, Berks; With a Short Precis of Other Lines of the Name” by Compton Reade, ‘To Which Is Added An Account Of The Reades Of Ressenarra By R Reade Macmullen‘. First edition, published by Jakeman and Carver of Hereford in1899. 148 pages. Cream cloth on boards with gilt lettering to spine. Gilt lettering and red and gilt coat of arms on front board. Spine is discoloured. Bumping to top and bottom of spine and corners of boards, with fraying to top and bottom of spine and resultant slight loss, but nothing to interfere with the titling etc. Slight cracking to hinges at end papers and at main title page, but book is secure. With the assistance, and drawing upon the records of General John Meredith Reade, a former US Consul General at Paris and US Ambassador at Athens, Compton Reade produced a concise record of the Rede family of which this is the result. The author has detailed the Rede line and connections from such places as Shipton, Ipsden, Brocket, Wales, America, Cheshire, The New Forest, Folkestone Galway etc. etc. Also included are numerous 'Tables of Royal Descents' detailing how the family has connections with royalty through such as John of Gaunt, King Alexander of Scotland, Edward I, Robert Bruce etc. etc. Illustrated with black and white photographs of various members of the Reade (Rede, Read) families. There are occasional pencilled margin notes within the book, presumably inserted by a previous owner. Loosely inserted into the book is a hand written letter, dated 1900, from a H V Reade from Kensington, to a H W Forsyth Harwood, concerning his own research into a connection between one Ellen Allen and the Reade family in 1664/5/6, with accompanying notes on the same subject. An absolutely marvellous, very scarce genealogical work !
