1750 indenture relating to the conveyance of buildings and land in the county
of Leicester. The parties involved are Caleb Ledyard of Bethnall
Green, Middlesex Dyer and his wife convey property to Richard Whishaw of Staple Inn, London gent to hold in trust for
James Theobald of White Waltham, Berkshire esquire
for a sum of forty pounds. Further details are given about past and present
family relationships and also where they lived and what job they did. The
property is extensive and lies in Knoston otherwise
Guoston otherwise Knossington
as part of the Leicestershire Estate. A large amount of information regarding
field names, acreage, boundaries and past and present occupants is given. A
very large indenture on vellum measuring 2 feet 7 inches by 2 feet 3 inches.
In good condition except for a tear at one of the creases, being a little
grubby with some discolouration due to age. The words are large and clear and
are fairly readable although the spelling of certain words is more difficult
to ascertain. There is a great deal of information about family history and
details regarding extensive amounts of land, which would be of interest to
genealogists and local historians alike. The manuscript also benefits from
the unusual extra ornate decoration around the words This Indenture. On the
side there are three blue six pence stamps with a piece of silver attached.
At the base four signatures with red wax seals each showing an upside-down
eagle. In
addition this manuscript has a further two indentures attached to it, both
measuring 1 foot 6 inches by 8 inches. These two, both copies of each other,
are part of a set of three that repeat some of the information in the primary
indenture. Although now attached behind one another the tops of both
indentures join together and are further indented on the side where the third
piece would join. |

Quincy
(Roger de, second earl of Winchester, constable of Scotland, ?1195-1265)
Quitclaim to Master Peter de Wylebi, clerk, his
heirs and assignees, of all suit and view of frankpledge which he made to the
earl twice a year at his court of the honour of Leicester, by reason of a
tenement of 100 shillings of silver he held of the earl's fee, manuscript on
vellum, in Latin, 12 lines, folds, slightly creased, green wax seal of de
Quincy featuring a knight armed on horseback, loss of most of border and
background, however with the detail of the knight on horseback in a
remarkable state of preservation, framed and glazed, 130 x 195mm., [c.
1235-64]. Roger
de Quincy or Quency, second son of Saer de Quincy, first earl of Winchester, inherited his
father’s patrimony on the death of his elder brother in 1221. He did not
succeed to his father’s earldom until the death of his mother in 1235. By his
marriage to Helen, eldest daughter of and coheiress
of Alan, lord of Galloway he became constable of Scotland. Although de Quincy
had substantial lands in both kingdoms it was in the service of Henry III
that he spent most of his time, serving in Poitou in 1222 and Guienne in 1242. In 1257 the king appointed him a joint
commissioner for composing the disputes between Alexander III and his nobles,
in reality the dispute between Alan Durward who
favoured English influence and the Comyns. De
Quincy was involved in the disputes between Henry III and his magnates which
resulted in the provisions of Oxford and was appointed one of the twenty-four
commissioners to treat of aid to the king. In 1259 he accompanied Walter,
bishop of Worcester and others to St. Omer where he met Richard of Cornwall
(Henry III’s brother) and forbade him entry to the realm until he had sworn
to uphold the provisions of Oxford. Earl Roger died in 1264. |

locations in the country such as Cookham and
London, but the common thread is the Grantham family, whom I think it is true
to say feature in every document. Some cover expensive London properties,
such as Oxford Street and Mayfair. The Duchess of Portland is party to at
least one of these documents. |
