The documents cover the period from 1844 to 1933 though the last
actual property deed is dated 1896.
Principal parties were Dalby (1844-1850); Salisbury (1850-1862);
Carver (1862-1863); Fernyhough (1863-1868); Beckwith (1868-1891); Towle

[Heather] Deeds to The Swan Alehouse & Adjoining
Property In 1854
John Newton sold several cottages including 'all those two messuages or tenements
(one whereof is used as a grocers shop) formerly one dwellinghouse or
tenement with the yard gardens orchard stable and outbuildings thereto
belonging situate and being in Heather aforesaid many years since known as
the Swan Inn.....'. This conveyance is
the most recent in a reasonably complete sequence of property deeds -
principally concerning The Swan - stretching back to 1732. The documents not specifically concerning
The Swan relate to the adjoining cottages, and are so inextricably linked that
the whole collection of deeds cannot be split. In total there are 49 documents, 35 of them
on parchment. A few of the 14 paper
items are in fact copies of some of the parchment ones. Principal names involved at intervals
through the 120 years covered by these deeds are Hinckley, Piddock, Daking,
Sansome, Tatlow, Newton, also Earp, Pearsall & Heafield - though most of
them were owners rather than occupiers - however the documents mention
current and former occupants as a way of identifying the properties. None of the documents contain or are
accompanied by plans, the naming of occupants was clearly regarded as being
sufficient to identify individual properties.
Unusual to have the opportunity to acquire such a run of deeds. The collection (ref 9/21) |

Lister (Sir
Matthew, physician in ordinary to Queen Anne, consort of James I, and to
Charles I, 1571?-1656) Indenture agreement lease of “the mannor of Melborne”
for £650 by Sir Thomas Edwards of Ashby de-la-Zouch and Robert Bowly of Kings

Witnessed by Simon Baxter, Richard Milner and Alexander Baxter, 1st July
1646. £300 - £400 A somewhat ambiguous document recording an extensive lease
by a famous royal physician and his brother of the manor of Melbourne Hall in
Derbyshire. No mention is made of Sir John Coke, or his father of the same
name (d. 1664) who were the owners of Melbourne from 1628. Sir John Coke left
Melbourne in January 1643 and went to Tottenham to escape the ravages of the
civil war. Sir Matthew Lister, physician. Elected a fellow of the College of
Physicians on 5 June 1607, censor in 1608, and one of the elects 10 May 1625.
“On 4 Oct. 1614 he was sent with Sir William Paddy to represent to the lord
mayor, Sir Thomas Middleton, that the city had no right to command the
fellows of the college to bear arms, and succeeded in establishing this
immunity. He was appointed physician to Anne, queen of James I, and to
Charles I, by whom he was knighted at Oatlands, Surrey, 11 Oct. 1636.” - DNB. |
