An early Victorian document dated 11th January 1839
for a one year lease of property and land in Yorkshire. The property is known
as the Hey farm and is in Salterforth in the parish of Barnoldswick then in
Yorkshire (now in Lancs)> The farm is being leased by a bookeeper named
John Cockshott and Joseph Green, a gentleman, both from Manchester. The men
are executors for a late Thomas Naylor of Bolton. The farm is leased to a
Thomas Cockshott from Skipton, Yorkshire. All three men have signed and each
red wax sealed. A solicitor named P Nicholson from Warrington and a solicitor
George Dudgeon with his clerk M Himsworth have signed as witnesses. The lease
has been entered into the register at Wakefield on page 338 and this has been
signed by the town's official. The one page (20"x27") handwritten
document has survived these 160 years or so very well and is in good crisp

pairs of cottages in Amport and by this indenture are selling them to the
Marquis of Winchester for £150. The document goes into great detail about the
family, marriages that have taken place giving dates and venues, children and
also about the precise position of the cottages. The plan, with scale and
compass direction, is hand coloured and one of the nicest I have seen on such
a document. There is also a red revenue stamp and 3 excellent red wax seals.
A SUPERB DOCUMENT IN EVERY WAY. Size. The document is approx. 28" wide x
23" high. Condition. In excellent condition with the usual folding

24-PAGE, PRINTED ABSTRACT OF TITLE TO LAND SITUATED AT EDGE HILL WITHIN WEST
DERBY IN THE COUNTY OF LANCASTER CALLED THE SPEKEFIELDS. The latest date I
can find printed in it is 1852 and someone has written 1853 in pencil on the
cover. It is likely that the abstract was printed in 1853. THIS DOCUMENT WILL
BE FOUND VALUABLE TO ANYONE RESEARCHING THE WEST DERBY AND WAVERTREE AREA AS
IT LISTS AND QUOTES FROM MANY INDENTURES AND WILLS INVOLVING THAT AREA. Some
pen insertions at various points are dated 1858 and there are also some
pencil notations. Size. The pages are approx. 8" wide x 12.5" high.
Condition. The front cover is dustmarked and has some tears and the corners
of the pages are a little dogeared but otherwise in very good condition with
some folding creases. From the image, the first indenture is dated 1813 and
is between William Chadwick of Liverpool, Builder of the first part, George
Christian of Liverpool, Merchant of the second part and James Okill &
John Johnson (the surviving Devisees in trust named in the Will of Joseph
Frodsham late of Eccleston Hall in the said County aforesaid, deceased, of

This indenture was produced in 1833 and is made between Mary Yates and Samuel
Hamer. Mary is the surviving executor of her the will of John Yates, her
father, of Gooden Lane, Heap. The father leaves land and property called
Brearley Meadow in Heap to his two daughters, Mary and Anne. The land is
subject to a 999 year lease. There are debts to a Thomas Howard of Elton so,
for a consideration of £220, property is purchased by Samuel Hamer of
Bamford. Also mentioned are John Rhodes and John Taylor. The document is
produced on one sheet of vellum and signed by Yates and Howard. It includes
two wax seals and is written in a clear legible script: a nice document. |

Unusual and interesting document of Agreement
between two parties for rent of land. Dated 18th June 1852. To quote in part
" An Agreement made the 18th day of June 1852. Between the Manchester ,
Sheffield , and Lincolnshire Railway Company , by John Hart of Fairfield nr
Manchester their agent of the one part , and William Jeffcock esq of High
Hayles nr Sheffield of the other part
.The said company agree to Let to the said William Jeffcock and the said
William Jeffcock agrees to become tenant to the said company of all those
pieces or parcels of land nos on plan 22, 23, & 24 purchased from the
Duke of Norfolk and containig ( inclusive of April ) about two acres more or
less. To keep the quicks ,railing & ditches on the north side of the said
land in good repair and condition .........." William Jeffcock was in
fact the first ever Lord Mayor of Sheffield about eight years earlier. An
unusual and fine discovery from an amount of papers never offered before .
Condition good , no tears . Document has been folded , and there are a few
marks which do not detract. |
