Single page foolscap sized document extracted in 1739 and witnessed by JAS NAYLOR & WILLIAM SHAW in the County of Lancashire - various names in latin extracted e.g. 1676 JOSHUA fil EDMUNDI WATERHOUSE de BARRAFORD, 1678 ROBERTUS fil EDMUNDI, 1716 EDMUNDUS WATERHOUSE senex de MOSS HOUSES, 1725 ELLENA WATERHOUSE bidua senex de CARRY BRIG. Baptisms and burials, my schoolboy latin won't take me any further so am not sure what it all means but may be of research value from this sort of vintage. The single page is folded in four and written on 2 sides, a little edge wear.

UNIQUE GENUINE ORIGINAL LETTER WRITTEN BY RALPH MORRIS AT LANCASTER CASTLE WHERE HE HAS BEING HELD, TO HIS WIFE AND CHILDREN ON SEPT 14TH 1706 SHORTLY BEFORE HIS EXECUTION The letter begins; My Dear Wife and Children this with my love to you my dear pray make yourself as easy as you can & keep up your heart & don't frett to make yourself ill & I hope you will find a friend in god who will be a husband to you and a father to my poor children.  I trust in heaven that all my sins are forgiven me and that god will recieve me at last into his kingdom. Whatever you do do not turn your back on your children & in a little time I hope that they will be of help to you in your old age & my dear Matty & Jenney pray be good to your mother my dear lambs & god will help you.  & when you see my two brothers pray tell them to leave the drinking & bad company for it has been my ruin........... (the above is not all that is written in this letter,  just the first bit)

This letter is original and in good condition for its age but it is obviously fragile.  It has become very flimsy where it has been folded and one folded section has become lose, it has a few smudged ink marks (difficult to read on the detached crease but otherwise fully legible). Until 1800, condemned criminals at Lancaster were executed at a place called Gallows Hill, on the moors close to Williamson Park As many as eight or nine condemned prisoners and their coffins would be carried in the bottom of a cart. The procession from the Castle would pass along Moor Lane and Moor Gate, stopping at the Golden Lion public house at the corner of Brewery Lane in order that the condemned prisoners could take their last drink, accompanied by their friends and relatives. Execution day also brought people from all over the North West of England out onto the streets of Lancaster to witness the hangings.
