The indenture records the release of a messuage tenement and land in Oldham, Lancashire and securing £200/0/0 and interest. It is produced on one sheet of stiff parchment and includes a revenue stamp and a wax seal. It is drawn between Peter Cowper of Oldham and Edward Radcliffe of Ffogg Lane Oldham. It is signed by Peter Cowper. The indenture is drawn in an attractive and ornate script. There is an inch square loss of parchment on one corner fold.

The land is to be used as building land and the indenture includes two plans showing the location of the land and an annual rent of £2/8/4 is mentioned..The land lies"...to or near a place called Bont Brow in Oldham .... bounded to the southerly side by the Kings Highway leading from Oldham to Manchester " The parties mentioned include James Hopwood a Manchester grocer, and Samuel Smethurst of Oldham an ale housekeeper. The document is on one sheet and has a revenue stamp. It is also signed by James Hopwood and Samuel Smethurst but there are no seals. It is in a reasonable condition although sections on the back of the document could be a bit cleaner.

For a consideration of £220/0/0 paid to John Parker, property is released " .... that messuage or dwelling house and all those closes closures or parcells of land called and known by the names of the Croft, The Great Bank and the Little Bank, and 4 1/2 acres of land in Newton with Scales" Also mentioned in the document is Six Beast Gates upon the marsh in Newton Scales. The document is in very good condition with no major blemish. It is signed by Thomas Grimshaw and John Parker and there are two intact wax seals.

(the above is not all that is written in this letter, just the first bit)

This letter is original and in good condition for its age but it is obviously fragile. It has become very flimsy where it has been folded and one folded section has become lose, it has a few smudged ink marks (difficult to read on the detached crease but otherwise fully legible). Until 1800, condemned criminals at Lancaster were executed at a place called Gallows Hill, on the moors close to Williamson Park As many as eight or nine condemned prisoners and their coffins would be carried in the bottom of a cart. The procession from the Castle would pass along Moor Lane and Moor Gate, stopping at the Golden Lion public house at the corner of Brewery Lane in order that the condemned prisoners could take their last drink, accompanied by their friends and relatives. Execution day also brought people from all over the North West of England out onto the streets of Lancaster to witness the hangings.

Dashwood, along with John Perry and Edward Noell, both Esquires of London assign the rents to Richard Dashwood, Esquire of London. The property located on Herbert Street in Manchester consisting of four dwelling and land is exchanged between John Robert Bardsley, a Civil Engineer, of the one part; and James Dunlop Affleck, an estate Agent; and John Williamson, a Draper, and Hosier and his wife Emma, of the other part. Cullen, bart, and Thomas Westrowe, esquire against Francis Heyes, gent, and Thomas Rowe, gent, for the annual rents from Manors, Rectories, etc., in Lancashire. Dated the 9th year of the reign of William III [1697]. Complete with a near perfect example of the Great Chancery seal of William III, showing a particularly clear and fine impression of the wax seal hanging by a coloured silk cord. Large initial letter portrait of the King, elaborate top decorated border showing mythical creatures, Royal coat of arms, etc. Property: Annual rents from numerous manors including Melling, Soulton Magna, Overfarrowe, late dissolved monastery of Cockersanell, Croenton, Hartmill, Cranford, Winwicke, Tunstale, Garstange, etc, all in the county of Lancaster. The document comes with a translation and full list of all properties and rents. Medium: Handwritten in Latin on vellum. Condition: Vellum dusty in places, but otherwise in good condition. Seal has a small 3cm slice missing from one edge, but the impression is not affected. Rest of seal is in very good condition. Document size: 72 by 70 cm.

Lovely bundle of old documents relating to the Lane family of Co. Cork, Ireland. First is a handwritten letter by Daniel Lane in 1803. This is addressed to his children, explaining his will. His children are named as Samuel, John, Francis, Jane and Catherine. Second document is the very lengthy will made by Daniel Lane of the Finn Barrs, City of Cork, merchant. Mentions children and also Sarah Sandiford his sister, son James Lane, childrens grandfather Francis Beck. Seems to be dated 1819 and 1820. Several pages in length - needs close reading and some research but lots of family information. Compete with signatures and seal - in fairly fragile condition with splits along folds. Next document is an indenture dated 1869 between William Lane Jnr. and Eliza Gray Landale of Melville Place, Portabello near Edinburgh Scotland. Another very lengthy document (several pages) - also refers to Oliver and Rebecca Dowlin of Charleville in the County of Cork and James Landale of Liverpool. Lastly is a long, hand-written will by Samuel Lane of St Finn Barr's in the County of Cork. Unable to see date and this is in fragile condition. Mentions lots of family members including children Samuel, John, Frank and sisters Elizabeth and Eliza Lane. Also requests a trust for "the use of twenty-five poor Protestant residents in the Parish of St Finn Barr's to be expended in the purchase of Bread and distributed to them in St Barr's Church near the Chancel after the second service...."
