This auction is for one of the largest vellums which we have sold on ebay. The vellum is dated 24th June 1817, and appears to be between Mr Oswald Mosley snr and his trustee to James Wilde Esq. The summary says that "appointment and release of two sums of 96 pounds 17 shillings and three pence and 74 pounds 12 shillings and 4 pence", and appears to relate to Manchester. The vellum itself has been added to over the years, as late as 1914. The document has two wax seals which are in good condition, and has six sets of stamp duties, for a total of six pounds. The vellum is six very large pages long, all hand-written and on original vellum. This is one of the finest quality, and interesting to read vellums, we have seen, and would be a wonderful talking point in a living room or business.

An interesting six sheet apprenticeship agreement, the apprentice being one Henry Haslam of Preston the Master William Worthington, Tinplate worker and Gas Fitter also of Preston, a term of 6 years.  Interesting as it is all hand written, the terms much more personalised than the normal pre-printed indentures which were in use (see our other auctions for more indentures).  He deals with apprentice rules towards the Masters family and other workers and apart from the usual provision of food, drink and lodging he also provides medicines and medical attention in case of sickness (an enlightened master).  Haslam starts at 3 shillings a week which rises in the sixth year to 9 shillings a week, interesting section on illness and absent without permission.  An unusal agreement for the Victorian gas industry.  Page size 16 x 10 inches, 6 sheets ones sized.  A final point, it's not signed so did the apprenticeship go ahead?

A 4 page, Handwritten Document, relating to Shaw Hall (or the Hall of Shaw), in the parish of Flixton, in the County of Lancaster. It is a certified copy of the original, dated 4th Sept 1775. The original document is dated 4th June 1772. I'm not familiar with this property or the origins of this document. However I have used the internet for research purposes, and this property seems to be Shaw Hall, Flixton, Manchester. This area is now part of Greater Manchester but at the time of the document it was a quite distinct parish, about 5 miles out of Manchester. I have read a contemporary description of Shaw Hall from 1830, which describes it a 'Curious Old Mansion, now occupied as a Boarding School (1830). I would imagine that it may have been a Elizabethan ot Jacobean Mansion. The property seems to have been the home to persons of great local importance and significance, some having held high positions in the county. 4 large pages (approx 40cm by 31cm). Secured with a silk knot in the top left corner. Securely bound and in good condition. Very neatly written in a hand of the 1770's. The document has been folded, so there is a vertical and horizontal fold line running across the pages. James Greatrex of Shaw Hall appears to have agreed to sell the property to Joseph Chippindall for £2300. Chippindall comes from Manchester. I find the document pretty difficult to follow, using the terminology, legal language and formalities of the time. However reference is made to barns, tennants, closes, fields and other properties, etc. Cheadle is also mentioned, I think  in connection with Upton's Tenements and Pott's Tenements, possibly owned by one or more of the gentlemen. Property in St James Square Manchester is also mentioned, as are dwelling houses and land at Hulme. Perhaps something about retaining the rents there. Other names are mentioned in the document, such as Matthew Lyon, (of Warrington), Mr Frith (who seems to have secured hundreds of pounds in interest from mortgages). The document is in good condition with no damage or tears. It is absolutely original, with clear 'Pro Patria' watermarks visible in the paper, when held up to the light. A great document in good condition. Probably of great interest to historians in the Manchester area. I would imagine that the property Shaw Hall may no longer exist, so this is superb documetary evidence regarding a fine, and ancient mansion house which may have been lost many years ago.

This is a one off unique legal document dated 1886 pertaining to an estate in York, England.

First let me tell you that I am no expert in this field, but I will do my best to describe the document as accurately as possible!

Written in fancy writing the document measures 22.5" X 26" and is made of what I believe to be either waxed paper or vellum which is semi-transparent when held against a light. I am not good at reading this style of writing, and while 100% of the writing is clearly readable I cannot decipher the words!  So bear with me and I will do my best! Words that I cannot make out I will * next to.

This document had details on both sides, so not to confuse you anymore than I can avoid I will call the front side A and the back side B!

The large writing at the top of the document (side A) reads: "A Memorial to be registered at the Land Registry in England pursuant to the Improvement of Land Act 1864 of An Order......." then writing then gets smaller and there is a lot of it! This side of document has an official red two shillings and six pence stamp, which has silver metal the crown part (on sideB of the page is a black stamp with the crown and letters VR* which seems to seal in the  silver metal on to the stamp on side A). The stamp on (side A) and has the crown at the top and is  size 1¾” x  1¾” approx As to the document content, as I said I am no expert, but it appears to be concerning the land/estate of The Mayor Alderman and the Burgefses* of the Borough of BLACKBURN.  It seems that The Mayor owned a considerable amount of land in the West Riding area of the county of York. These lands are described on the document (side A) as: "Such portion of the following farms"

Brennan* Whitendale* Beatrix* Wood End "and other lands as are coloured red and green on the plan hereunto annexed".

On the (side B) of the document are 4 maps/plans (see photos) these plans for the parish of Slaidburn, include lands also belonging to the major which are detailed as: The areas of Costy Clough and Whittendale River, Dunsop Houses, Sheepfold, Part of Holme Head Wood, Lands surrounding and including the Brennand River

The scale of the map reads as 1 inch -90. Statute Chains! One of the maps has a legend/key which says Land for road coloured green and some other letters and numbers and Land for Wells or Tanks at W.X.Y.Z. Side A seems to be concerning the Improvement of Lands act 1864 and the sighting of new wells and roads for the area but I am really NOT sure! It is signed by the Solicitors to the General Land Drainage and Improvement Company, but I can not decipher the signature!  What ever the context of the document it is original and in good condition for its age, with the exception of being very stiff , from being folded up for 119 years! (some of the folds are a little dirty and there is a tiny hole appearing in one of the folds).  There are some pencil marks on the document as to their nature again, I do not know. There is some pencil numbering in the top left corner and some other wtitting dotted around! No doubt it was an official from the Office of the Land Registry! When the document is folded the back has signatures of witnesses?

There is no date on it but British History Online has it listed for 1705.  It comprises 12 pages which have been stitched together.  It has been folded and has damage along the fold on the cover page.  There is a lot of foxing on all the pages.  It also has a thick sheet of paper which has been made into an protective covering which has the title handwritten on it.
