This indenture was produced in 1899 and commences with the will of John Hotson who leaves his property to his wife and children. Unfortunately he owes a considerable sum of money, so much that the deeds to his property are in the posession of the bank.This indenture records a mortgage of £2,200 so that the family can keep their properties. The parties involved in the agreement are Eleanor Mary Hotson, Arthur Wales Hotson, Mary Eleanor Drake, John Herbert Hotson, The National Provincial Bank, and Isabella Jolly of Torquay. The land and property involved is substantial and every item is listed on the four page vellum indenture. It includes 51 acres in Bunwell Parish, Church Farm in Carleton Rode which amounts to 104 acres, 151 acres at Pulham St Mary the Virgin and Pulham St Mary Magdalene. The number of fields, farms, and persons named is too numerous to mention. The document is signed by the five Hotsons and there are six wax seals and a bank wafer seal. A very fine and informative document.

An original and unique ledger titled Commisions and Orders for Recruiting Land Waiters 1775.  The ledger consists of handwritten instructions from Custom Houses to ports all over England to other Customs Officer's, we give an example of the first page;

Customs House Plymouth. 8/12/1775

Gentleman,

By an order from the Honourable Commissioner of the Customs dated the 5th instant you are directed to take under your care George Goiff appointed a Landwaiter at Dartmouth and instruct him in the art of gauging and the discharge of coastgoods and if after six months attendance you find him sufficiently qualified you are to join with us in a certificate thereof to be transmitted to the board.

                                  We are

                                  Your Humble Servants

                                  R Widgen

It then goes on for 111 pages to 1824 then works from the back of the book from 1794 to 1830, another 80 page entries are all addressed Customs House London or Plymouth, sending trainee officers to different  ports with various assignments Land Waiters, Tide Waiters, Riding Officer, Searcher, Landing Surveyor, Boatman, Coast Waiters.  All the letters are in different  hands some signed by senior customs officers other by secretaries, many ask for baptisms certificates of the trainees.  It seems to be Customs House master ledger possibly travelled between London and Plymouth.  It's definately unique, it's part of a collection of original Customs and Excise documents, manuals, posters etc., going back to the 1700's which we will be auctioning over the coming weeks, many rare items.  Condition, covers rubbed, internally all good.  Rare letters from over 200 years ago with 100s of signatures of customs officials of the time.  2nd picture is letter quoted, folio size.
