A
leather covered notebook with a brass catch which has "Reynolds's
Astrological and Prophetic Almanack, for 1848" in the back. It has jottings covering a number of years
mostly concerning country issues, e.g. "September the 18th 1858 8 brase
of birds, 1 hare..." - continuing until November 1859. The person who owns the book (possibly John
Hutchinson) obviously had a very good bull as there are lists of people for
1862 & 1863 whose cows have had the pleasure! There are two pages of recipes for such
items as "Horse Balls", "for lise", etc. There is a set of accounts for 1861
"Backey and lent money 3s 6d", "new shirt 2s 6d", etc. There are two pages entitled 1862
"valuation of the effects of the late Mr. Thomas Hick situated at
sealing in the parish of Easington in the County of York". "1862 Mrs. Hannah Murray to Thomas
Hutchinson Rent which was due on the 11 of October last for the messuage or
dwelling house and publick house known By the sign of the graps...at Scaling
in the parish of Easington...".
The next page says "To Mrs. Hannah Murray, I heareby authorize
and request you to pay all rent now due....to my brother Thomas Hutchinson
whose receipt to you shall be a sufficient discharge...John
Hutchinson". "15 June 1863
Jonathonan Atkinson ??? Butcher and farmer one fat tup £2 10s...",
etc. This really needs somebody with
knowledge of Easington to study it! 43 pages have writing on them. Some pages have been torn out and one page
is loose. Cover is grubby and
battered. |
