On offer
this unusual and rare document which is a receipt of payment for rent of The
Wakefield Theatre. The document has a small piece from the right hand corner
missing and two small holes in the middle which appear to have been where the
seal was as can be seen in the photo. Neither affect the letters contents.
Dated 18th March 1822, it is a letter sent from Brookes and Bulmer,
Attorneys, York. to a Mrs M.Banks. The letter states. "Gentlemen. I am
much obliged to you for a cheque for forty pounds, the half years rent of the
Wakefield Theatre. I am gentlemen your obedient servant, Mary Banks."
Pontefract March 18th 1822. The document is water marked with the words G

Bradlay of York, butcher - all rights in lands & tenements with
appurtenances which Alan lately had by gift & feoffment of William.
Clause of warranty. Sealed by William of Wylsthorp and witnessed by John de
Gysburn, Henry de Gelsthorp, William de Hoperton, Thomas Dygill, William del
Roth clerk and others. Dated at Wylsthorp the 18th day of May in the 2nd year
of the reign of Richard II [1390]. This is a very attractive document in
excellent condition for its age and still retains an intact wax seal (a
rarity for medieval documents). It refers to lands in the parish of
Wilsthorpe, South Kesteven in Lincolnshire. Handwritten in latin on vellum.
Minor creasing and cockling. Wonderful intact red wax seal depicting the
virgin and child, with inscription around edge - 2 cm diameter. Document

Lease document measuring about 9 x 28", fine condition for age with some
folds - RALPH HAMOND and THOMAS BUTTERFIELD both of WEST SCRAFTON, Coverdale in
North Yorkshire. Dated only in words as far as I can see but am no expert in
these early deeds - appears to read 'in the twenty sevone year of Charles
second' which would make it 1687 and James II ! It is certainly late 17th c
from the style of writing, small wax seal still attached at base where signed
by Ralph Hamond, a bit grubby on the back. The reign of Charles II was dated
from the year Charles I was executed - 1649. Thus this document is dated
1676. |

II VELLUM INDENTURE involving LUND and SETTLE of YORKSHIRE NO RESERVE This
excellent vellum indenture is dated 2nd October 1680 in the thirty-second
year of the reign of King Charles II. It starts with a fancy, handwritten,
embellished "THIS INDENTURE" and it is between Robert Lund late of
Scostropp (later spelt Scosthrop) and now of Airton, Yorkshire of the one
part and William Settle of Scostropp of the other part and concerns "one
little close ... of meadow ground called the Scarth". Mention is also
made of the Rectory of Kirkby in Malhamdale. The original vellum seal tag has
survived but not the seal. Size. The document is approx. 21" wide x
14" high. Condition. There is a small (1" x 1.5") brown stain
as shown in the photo but the document is otherwise in superb condition with
the usual folding creases. |

LOVELY HANDWRITTEN INDENTURE concerns SCOSTHROP - YORKSHIRE NO RESERVE This indenture
is entirely handwritten on heavy paper and is dated 1st May 1725. It is
between Agnes Anderson & Dorothy Anderson of Scostropp in the parish of
Kirkby in Malhamdale, Yorkshire of the one part and William Preston of the
parish of Giggleswick of the other part. It concerns one cottage, or
firehouse, one barn adjoining, one garth or croft adjoining the firehouse and
a meadow called Burnbank - all in the township of Scostropp (now Scosthrop) -
and a lease for 5,000 years. There are 3 impressed revenue stamps, a paper
duty stamp and 2 very good red wax seals. LOVELY DOCUMENT Size. The document
is approx. 21 wide x 16" high.
Condition. Superb condition with the usual folding creases. Also
