Vellum
indenture dated 1596 between CHARLES MELHAM of BULLINGTON (LINCS) son and
heir of WILLIAM MELHAM and THOMAS BURNARD of HOVINGHAM, Yorkshire, husbandman
relating to two oxgangs of arable land and meadow in several fields at LOCKTON
near PICKERING in north Yorks, the precise locations then given in the main
body of the document which measures about 14 x 20" when opened out.
Masses of reading in English for someone but the condition of this vellum is
not as good as others we have sold, some water staining and a few small holes
(nibbled by mice?) which mean the odd word of text is not complete, the seals
are also missing. Offered at low starter with NO RESERVE for an ELIZABETHAN

This
large vellum deed dated 1749 relates to land dispute at Campsall near
Doncaster in Yorkshire. It is written by hand on vellum having a highly
decorative border and even more decorative top border with Geo 11 in the top
left. It measures 31 x 26 " approxamately. Attached to the bottom in an
old metal tin 5" in diameter is a large seal? which appears to be made
of a kind of grey mineral of some
kind. It has 3 figures on it, a central one seated and 1 standing each side
of this figure. The top left is broken in 3 places and there is a small part
missing. There is also some writing on the left edge but impossible to
decipher. The dispute is between THomas Snowden, demandent, Stafford Squire,
Gent, Tenant and Dudley John Baxter, Vouchee. Also mentions Edmund Wilson. It
seems to have been held before witness Sir John Willes, Knight Westminster. |
