Civil War Indenture. Vellum indenture dated 1st
October, 1647, being the assignment of a lease for a farm in Yorkshire
between George and Elizabeth Horner and Sir John Yorke, featuring an
elaborate caligraphic initial letter, signed at the base by Horner and his
wife, original seal tags but lacking seals, in fine clear condition. An
interesting document reflecting the political confusion of the time. This has
been issued in the name of Charles I, even though by this time, Charles was a
prisoner of Parliament. Documents of this nature issued towards the end of
the Monarchy are somewhat uncommon. (1) £30-50 |

Yorkshire Spring Water. Scarce vellum manuscript
document dated July 12th 1788, for the sale of 'All that spring or springs of
water' in Saddleworth Yorkshire. A historic document in the development of
the mill towns of Yorkshire. The agreement is between John Harrop the
Younger, described as a Merchant of Dobeross in Saddleworth and Henry
Whitehead the Older and Younger, described as Clothiers. They are leasing a
spring known as 'The Old Intack' described as 'so deep that neither a plow
nor spade will reach the covers' at a place identified as The Brow. It also
involves the lease of a mill and machinery. In the days before steam and
electricity the only source of power was the enormous amounts of water
available on the moors. This document effectively chronicles the emergence of
the developing mill industry which became synonymous with this part of
Yorkshire and which was to be the main source of prosperity until the 1960's |

writ of haberi facias seisinam to the Escheator of Yorkshire, dated February
21st, 1634, written on vellum, some fading to text but legible throughout,
still retaining a portion of the Great Seal of Charles I The writ commands
that property, including 100 acres of land in North Cowton, North Yorkshire,
be handed over to Anthony Myles, son of Richard Myles, who had died at the
age of 32 in 1632 - thus the document settles the succession of the estate
from father to a son, who, in view of his father's early age must have been a
minor at the time. North Cowton is today a village just off the B1263 between
Richmond and Darlington. Documents of this nature are scarce on the market. |

A note
of the Rents of Lands estated on me 1632. For my cozens sr. Geo.Wentworth of
Wooley & Tho., Wentworth of Breton esq. Manuscript written on 2pp folio,
Rouen May 6th, 1648, written in ink in a neat hand, possibly in the hand of
William, 2nd Earl of Strafford , a little faded but clearly legible, signed
by Strafford at the bottom of page two and with an additional note in another
hand ' The above Rental of the Earl of Strafford's Estate, whilst he was
abroad'. The document lists various payments including those to the poor at
Wentworth and Harwood as well as a payment of 400 to 'My Lady', and provides
information on the revenue due out of 'Wentworth Colepitts'. Various named
individuals are listed, such as 'William Bower and Robert Fotter' who are
listed as servants at Wentworth. Strafford succeeded to the title on the
execution of his father, Charles I's chief Minister, whose death was demanded
by Parliament and which was given to them in a supreme act of appeasement by
the King. Wentworth Castle is now a Further Education College north of
Sheffield. |

The
Journal of Marmaduke Strother of Burmantofts Hall, Leeds, c. 1780, manuscript
in a neat legible hand on 88p, original vellum boards, two manuscript letters
tipped in, and approximately 45 drawings and maps in his hand, some aging to
binding, but interior in fine fresh condition, folio. A remarkable journal,
providing considerable genealogical information on the Strother family, one
of whom was Mayor of Ripon from 1681-97 and another who took part in the
American war of Independence and married a 'squaw' at Fort Mobile in Florida.
There are a number of observations on native Americans and comments on George
Washington. The journal chronicles Strother's early life, growing up at
Burmantofts Hall, and tells of hard times after being swindled by an Alderman
of Leeds. The journal also gives a very detailed account of an outbreak of
Smallpox in 1811 and of particular interest are the considerable number of
astrological charts and writings, including extracts from letters from his
astrologer Joseph Powell. The hand drawn illustrations include a fine
astrological chart of the heavens (in need of repair), plus various maps and
views. |

Hay and John de Ronclyff, written in a clear chancery hand, with a good
impression of a pendant wax seal attached by original vellum tag, 140x280mm.
Of considerable interest to genealogists of York, providing the names of many
who inhabited York and its neighbouring towns (presumably Ripon was the
original abode of John de Rypon) in the final quarter of the 14th c. Scarce. |

Alton. Attractive vellum indenture
dated April 4th, 1660, being the lease by Sir Thomas Ingram to John Carill,
of Harting, Sussex and Humfrey Weld of Lulworth Castle, Dorset, of part of
the manor of Alton and other property in Alton, Farley, Stanton, Bradley etc
and parts of manors in Yorkshire, written in a clear legible hand on two
large leaves of vellum, signed by all parties, save Ingram (so presumably
this was his copy), other parties include Francis Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury
and his wife, and Robert Brudenell, Baron of Stonton, with elaborate
calligraphic initial letter, retaining four pendant wax seals attached by
original vellum tags. The area referred to in this document is now occupied

Remarkable letter from William Chaloner from Guisborough to his
attorney at Leek in Staffordshire, dated April 20th, 1746, including a long
reference to the state of the Highland Rebels and predicting an inevitable
battle, written in a fluent legible hand, fine seal in black wax,
straightline Northalerton mark, with direction on address panel 'by Stone
bag', 1p, folio. The Battle of Culloden had actually taken place five days
before this letter was written, but with the lack of instant communication in
those days, Chaloner would not have known this. He comments that '...the
rebels have met their match Gen Bland having forced his way across the River
Spey and cut a great many to pieces several hundreds have surrendered up
their arms to him and gone about their affairs with a partdon to go and
cultivate their lands...' He also comments on the dreadful state of the
Highland Army, saying that they are 'obliged to eat horse and dog flesh' and
that 'they neither will, nor dare fight against that deavelish mann cauld
Wolly Cumberland, which I really believe to be true'. He then goes on to say
that 'last Tuesday the two armies were within eight miles of each other so
that a battle must be either by this or in a few dayes, provided they will
stand.' he also reports on a vast army transported from London by ship
landing in Newcastle to bolster Cumberland's already considerable force of
15,000. A remarkable and extremely scarce letter, which gives a vivid picture
of the end of the grant enterprise of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the fate of
his Highland followers. It also reinforces the fact that the majority of the
army didn't want anything to do with the Rebellion, and it is interesting
that even at this late stage of the Rebellion those who deserted the cause
were pardoned and returned to their lands. |

Fine autograph letter from William Chaloner from Guisborough to his
attorney at Leek in Staffordshire, dated January 27th, 1746, reporting on the
movements of the Duke of Cumberland in pursuit of the Jacobite rebels and
commenting on the Battle of Falkirk, written in a fluent legible hand, seal
tear but otherwise in good condition, straightline Northalerton mark, and
freefranked by 'Bowes', with direction on address panel 'by Stone bag', 1p,
folio. Contemporary reports on the progress of the Highland Rebellion are now
becoming scarce on the market. In this letter Chaloner comments, '...this
very morning the Duke of Cumberland went from Northallerton on his way to
Scotland in order to intirely rout all ye Rebels. God knows our forced
behaved very badly at Falkirk, & a third of our army did not engage ...' |

Three important documents, early 19th c., the first entitled the
Customs of the Forest Honor of Knaresbrough 1803, the second being the Practice
of the court of General Session of the Peace for the West Riding of the
County of Yorkd dated 1801 and the third being a survey of the lands and
borough of Knaresborough dated 1837. The first two documents are bound
together. In the first there is a comprehensive listing of procedures to be
adopted in various legal situations, such a inheritance of a tenancy if the
sitting tenant loses his life as a result of being convicted of a crime. The
second document lays down the practices to be adopted in the court of
Sessions and the third document provides comprehensive information on land
owners and occupiers in the area in the year of the accession of Queen

Document on vellum, dated March 18th, 1574, being a deed of sale given by Sir
Simon Musgrave of Edenhall, Cumberland, for the sum of 00 to be paid to a list
of creditors contained on a separate leaf attached to the document, arising
from the sale of all his closes, grounds, houses etc. lying in Givendale or
Great Gwendale near Pocklington, Yorkshire, on a single leaf of vellum with
attached list, one small stain, a little faded but legible throughout, with
three seal tags. The first name (and presumably the major creditor) on the
list is Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, favourite of Elizabeth I. It
appears that Musgrave had got into considerable debts, resulting in the
forced sale of the property listed. |
