Two page vellum document dated 1879: Rosa Edith Ballenden, wife of John Ballenden sworn at Worcester regarding property in Hombourne, Staffordshire Includes a Judicature Fees' Five Shillings light blue embossed paper seal with metallic centre. Other names mentioned in this document are Hilary Hill, Edward Cartwright, Samuel Martin Beale, George Clarke & Richard Price Hill. Certificate of acknowledgement of a deed by a married woman This is a guaranteed genuine Victorian vellum document consisting of at least two pages.

These certificates were introduced as part of the Fines and Recoveries Act of 1833.  Their purpose was to ensure that, where a married woman was selling or mortgaging property jointly with her husband, she was of full age and completely understood what was taking place.  Given that any property belonging to a woman automatically passed to her husband upon marriage, I am not convinced that this would have made any difference but, apparently, common law required her to be a party to any deed and these acknowledgements were intended to prevent the husband from abusing his position in those cases where he inherited property through his marriage.  Although votes for women were still some way off, the Married Women’s Property Act of 1882 gave them the same rights over their own property as if they had been single or widowed.

ELIZABETHAN INDENTURE "1586" (WORCESTERSHIRE).  This Elizabethan indenture was uncovered hidden between the pages of an old book  about Warwickshire, sadly the book had perished beyond repair, but thankfully the Document has survived in good condition.  This document was signed and dated 1st March 1586, finalising the transaction of the sale/lease of The Mansion House, Orchards, Gardens, Barns, Stables, Oxhouses, and also Lands ? Meadows etc,. within the parish of Alvechurch (e). This document seems to be confirming either the  renting, purchase or inheritance of the said property and land, sorry I can not be more specific, as even though there is a document translating it  from - either Latin or Old English, it is still, for me at least, difficult to understand. (This translated copy will accompany the Indenture as it was found with the document ).  On the reverse there are lots of signatures, possible witnesess or would be tenants?, plus the date.(which reads 1 March 1586  28 Eliz - which refers to the 28th year of Queen Elizabeths reign). The  indenture starts "This indenture made the first of Marche in the eighte and twentith yeare of the reigne of our soveraingn Lady Elizabeth (1 Mar 1585/6) by the grace of god Quene of Englande France & Ireland defender of the feithe" (this spelling is from the translated document). At the bottom of this Document there are three signatures which look like - Thomas Coombe, Ales Coombe and Robert James, these names are mentioned in this Indenture.  The document is completely original, either on parchment or old paper, there is one small perforation on the second fold down and can be seen in the photographs.  It measeures 12 1/2" wide x 16".

PARCHMENT SALE INDENTURE – 1757. 123g 87x70cm

Between John Yapp of Tidney, Whitbourne, Herefordshire plus John Ingram of Bewdley, Worcestershire (exectors of Ann Woodhouse of Clifton Upton Teme, Worcestershire), and Charles Holland of Cleobury Mortime, Shropshire, and Benjamin Thomas, Clerk, of Sergeants Inn, Chancery Lane, London, whereby Holland pays Ingram and Yapp £270 for a property called Church Gate with meadows and orchards at Middleton on the Hill, Herefordshire. This appears to be a re-assignment of a 500 year mortgage between Jeremiah and Mary Shelton plus Alice Sheppard and Richard Horsnett after Horsnett defaulted. Parchment, hand lettered in clerks copperplate, red boundary lines, embossed stamps, wax seals. Top edge cut in wavy ‘indenture’.

Labelled on back 'Assignment of Mortgage to [Possessor???] the Inheritance in Trust for Benjamin Thomas'

Signed and sealed by John Yapp, John Ingram, Charles Holland and Benjamin Thomas on the bottom edge

John Ingram must be 'The most important Bewdley pewterer in the late 18th century' (Bewdley Museum)

'After inheriting his uncle’s business in 1767 John Ingram (1731-1799) operated the pewter manufactory successfully, but he had at least one other industrial interest. In 1768 he was identified as a brassfounder when he was made a burgess of Bridgnorth, in Shropshire, a few miles up the Severn. John Ingram probably lived in River House, on Riverside South in Bewdley, a dwelling which belonged to the Ingram family'
