bidding on a very old & interesting document entitled "This
Indenture" and dated 24th June 1831. The Document contains lovely Old
Hand written script of approx 5000 words together with a large hand drawn
detailed area map and schedule, spread over 6 pages of old document paper.
The six sheets are fixed together at the base with tiny hand tied bows. This
Indenture will be of special interest to those living within the districts of
Kidderminster, Stourbridge or Bewdley, Within the county of Worcester, As it
outlines the Purchase, Release & conveyance of the Freehold part of the
Kinfare Hill estate with a covenant to surrender the Copyhold part thereof.
The Indenture was made between Thomas Comber Raybold of the village of
Kinfare, in the county of Stafford and William Foster of Wordesley House, In
the parish of Kingswinford, In the said county of Stafford. The contents of
the indenture, detail the purchase of approximatly 200 acres of land in the
village of Kinfare, Comprising of Farm land, Dwellinghouses and forestry,
Some being Freehold (A property held free from duty, Except to the king) and
some being Copyhold (A species of estate or right of holding land, according
to the custom of a manor, by copy of the roll originally made by the steward
of the lords court). The purchase price of £10,000 was agreed for the Land,
which was exclusive of the timber and trees growing therein. Due to the
exceptional quantity of land being purchased, It was necessary for a value to
be placed upon the forestry. The timber and trees were valued at £870 and the
vendor demanded the full sum of £10,870 of lawful money for the entire estate
(An exceptional amount of money in its day). The full page schedule & map
referred to and included within this indenture has been drawn to scale, The
scale being in "chains" which is an old unit of measurement. The
map indicates a detailed study of the lands and boundries of the individual
parcels of land being purchased. The schedule, being part of the map, Details
the "Modern" names of the individual parcels of land, 29 in total
in black ink. Whilst the other half of the schedule lists the same 29 parcels
of land, Giving the "Ancient" names of the fields in red ink. Also
included are six Blue Revenue stamps and Worcester ink "crown
stamps" dated between 8th September 1830 and 25th November 1830. Due to
the vast amount of money involved in this purchase, There is a £75 Blue duty
stamp on the first page, which is a considerable amount of duty to have paid,
which may make the stamp of some rarity and therefore collectable. The other
five pages carry duty stamps of the average value of £1. At the foot of the
document, there is a red wax seal. This is a very interesting and unusual
indenture, Concidering the scale of the purchase,(Possibly one of the largest
purchases of 1830), And the details indicated in the schedule and map. A nice
old original folded document, consisting of six pages. Measures 30" x
24" with clear handwriting and in good condition for its age, Some 172
years old. |

of Kinfare, In the county of Stafford. The Indenture was made between John
Hodgetts-hodgetts Foley Esq of Prestwood in the county of Stafford, Who was
Lord of the Manor in Kinfare and the second son of the Right Honourable
Thomas, then late Lord Foley, Baron of Kidderminster, And James Foster of
Stourton castle, In the parish of Kinfare, In the said county of Stafford,
Who was a batchelor. The contents of the indenture, detail the purchase of 8
seperate parcels of land, Totaling 1 acre, 2 roods & 12 poles in the
parish of Kinfare, As indicated on the hand drawn map set within the text of
the indenture. The sum of £288, 15 shillings of lawful money of Great Britain
was demanded by the vendor, Being the concideration money for the full
purchase of the indicated land. The hand drawn map referred to and included
within this indenture has been drawn to a scale of two Chains to one inch,
This being an old unit of measurement. The map indicates a detailed study of
the lands and boundries of the individual parcels of land being purchased.
Also included are two Blue Revenue stamps and Worcester ink "crown
stamps" dated between 25th September 1839 and 14th October 1839. At the
foot of the document, there are two red wax seals. One of the seals, Located
next to the signature of James Foster, Contains the impression of a
"Coat of Arms", Which suggests his title was of some significance.
Within the indenture, there is also reference to previous indentures, listed
seperately for the years 1790, 1802 & 1822. This is a very interesting
and unusual indenture, Given the unknown coat of arms and referances to the
Right Honourable Thomas, Baron of Kidderminster and mention of "His
Majesty's Royal licence and authority being applied. A nice old original
folded document, consisting of two pages. Measures 30" x 24" with
clear handwriting and in good condition for its age, Some 164 years old. |

Hello
this auction is for two antique indentures. The first is made up of
nine pages of blue paper and relates to ‘the trustees for the sale under the
will of the late John Bourne deceased to certain Freehold cottages or
tenements garden and premises situate at Summer Place North Barbourne in the
parish of Claines in the County of Worcester’. The indenture starts in1854
and has things added until 1879 when John Bourne dies. It measures approx16 ½
x 13 inches when open and approx 10 x 8 ¼ inches when folded, the front cover
has torn around the edges and at one corner the tear goes through all the
pages but on all of the pages the ink is clear and crisp it doesn’t look aged
or worn. The second indenture directly relates to the first in that it is a
four seal Indenture entitled ‘Conveyance’ dated 1879. ‘Between Sarah Mary
Bourne of the City of Worcester Spinster, Edward John Bourne of the City of
Worcester Builder, John James Bourne of the City of Worcester Builder and
Daniel Mason of the City of Worcester Publican’. When folded it measures
approx 7 ½ x 9 inches and when open to full size it measures approx 22 x27
inches. It has four red seals at the bottom and next to them there is a
signature, one for each of the parties that is involved in the Indenture.
There is also a blue piece of paper attached to the document that has ‘one pound
fifteen shillings’ written on it. At the back of the paper where it is
attached it has a small piece of paper glued over it with a royal emblem and
the letters V R. This indenture is in totally solid, un-torn condition, when
folded exteriors are aged, but good quality indentures and when opened very
bright and clear, please see pics |

It is my
pleasure to offer this English, six-page, five-red seal, hand-drawn marriage
settlement / indenture. I would guess it's on vellum, but it could be
sheepskin or some other skin ... I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell them
apart. I've only had opportunity to read a relative few lines of the document
to get the gist of the circumstance, and will attempt here to give you my
interpretation, though it could be far off the mark. There's a LOT of reading
here for you to untangle to define the circumstance! As I understand it, the
document was drawn upon the upcoming marriage of Edward Vincent Wheeler, of
Newham Court in the County of Worcester, to Miss Marian Vashon of Bevere
Knoll, County of Worcester. Interestingly, she was described in the legal
document as "spinster, an infant of the age of 20 years to
thereabouts." She was the daughter of the late Rev. James Volant Vashion
and Mary Ann Vashon. Apparently (and as I said, I could be mistaken on this)
he was signing over control of several estates he stood to inherit to Sir
William Smith and Rev. George Ranier, who in turn would lease them for 99
years to Colonel John Colvin of the Honorable East India Companies. A Rev.
Henry Browne was also involved, apparently as a clerk or representative of
Colvin. In return, the soon-to-be newlyweds and his widowed mother (Anna
Wheeler of Cheltenham in the County of Glouster (sp?) would receive regular
trust payments from the arrangement. Another relative, Frances Wheeler of
Newham Court, would also share in the trust.
The couple would receive 300 pounds quarterly from the trust. At least
that's the arrangement as I guess it. I left much of the truth of the puzzle
-- 97% of it -- for you to figure out. The properties involved included
Kyrewood House and Farm, Eastham Church or Court Farm, a farm in the Parish
of Richford, a farm called Terrills (sp.?) in Tenbury (sp.?), the Hole Farm,
various cottages, orchards and fields (all identified, like "Castle Tump
Meadow"). I don't pretend to understand all the stamps and seals applied
to this document. There are five red wax seals beside the signatures of the
principals (click on third scan to enlarge), plus each page has stamps on
blue paper with metal( see fourth scan), with a stamp stuck to the reverse of
each (see fifth scan). The roughly 21.5x27" sheets are folded at bottom
and tied together with ribbon. The document is in fair to good condition. It
is rumpled and pretty much refuses to lay flat (is that a sign it's skin as
compared to vellum?). Apparently it
was folded long ago, but I'd hate to try to refold it, so it will be shipped
to you flat. The outside sheet has moderate soiling and staining over about
40 or 50% of the surface, the worst of this being a dark dampstain. There's
some light dampstaining or soiling over 10-20% of the last sheet, while the
rest of the pages are mostly clean and white. |
