A
really old indenture in the reign of George the Second, relating to a house
(or houfe as in the script) and garden in Stratford
upon Avon dated 15th October 1733, the property of 'Champney's
and wife' (Elizabeth and John). £12 changed hands. This is a little over a
hundred years after Shakespeare's death and Stratford would not have been
much changed in that period. The language is archaic and difficult to
understand especially with the s's being written f.
This on yellowing parchment paper with seals by each of the Champneys' names (Elizabeth has a mark, not a signature
as she obviously was illiterate) at the bottom, in very good condition. In
some places Champneys appears to be written Champnoys - spelling was a little haphazard in those
days, particulary with surnames. Measures approx 27
x 16 inches. Also mentions Joseph Broom |

lovely large old deed / indenture, dated 16th February 1805, in the forty
fifth year of the reign of George the Third and just seven months before the
death of Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. Beautifully handwritten on vellum
it relates to a Messuage and Garden in the Rother Market,
Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire. The principal parties involved are Mr John
Broom, Mr Charles Stevens (a tailor, spelt taylor) and Mr John Barnhurst.
Witnesses were Richard Roberts and William Featherston.
It appears to relate to the will of Joseph Broom, grandfather of John. There is a lovely blue duty stamp for one
pound and ten shillings and 4 seals at the bottom. Naturally, this is
browning with its 200 year age. There are fold creases but no tears. It measures
24 inches by 30 inches. |

Beautiful printed vignette of the initial 'T' starts off this important
Indenture This is a major document concerning the sale of the famous Manor of
Alspath (also called Meriden) plus other land.
There are six seals with signatures belonging to Elizabeth Holbech, Anthony Bloxham and
William Halford, amongst others. Also still in
place (and incorporating the silver tag) are the two Revenue Stamps on the
blue strip. The Manor of Alspath is famous for
being once held by Lady Godiva who rode naked through the streets of
Coventry. This is in excellent condition for a manuscript nearly 3 Centuries
old. There are 28 full lines of script written in the English of the day and
despite some areas of fading I believe the whole document is decipherable.
One small hole on the letter 'n' 4th line down does not hinder translation.
The text itself is in the clearest handwriting I have seen for a document of
this age, which should also help. This document was handwritten in Old
English with a quill pen using sepia ink on vellum (calf skin) parchment. (Unusually
the texture of the animal skin is very noticeable along the whole top rear
portion). The whole document is in sound condition even along the folds,
there are no tears on these folds which is unusual for its age. The good
condition is due to it being kept folded for centuries. This is a very thick vellum and can be unfolded with ease without
fear of it tearing. The document starts :- |

genuine old legal document dtaed 23rd October 1854. It is all hand written on vellum
parchment which was in typical use during that time. I rescued it from being
thrown out of a solicitors office. It measures
approx.65cm wide and about 43cm deep. The writing is perfectly legible and
quite easy to read although the words are a bit esoteric. It is a deed which
has the effect of transferring back to the borrower certain land which was
transferred to the lender as security for a loan of £200. This was before the
modern concept of a mortgage which was introduced in 1925. The deed is made
between William Joseph Woodhams of Napton Warwickshire, who had loaned the money, and John
Smith of Flecknoe who then repaid the money and
took the land back. The land is near Flecknoe,
which, as you may know is near Rugby in Warwickshire. A John Charles Read is
also mentioned but I can't work out why. The document has sealing wax seals
and bears a stamp duty imprint from Southam for
five shillings. It is in very good condition. It has been stored folded but
it probably hasn't been looked at for a hundred and fifty years. |
