Suggate (Robert, merchant seaman). [Autobiography]. Fifty years since or My Rough Log, manuscript, c. 174pp., 2ff. loose, some other ff. inner margins strengthened, original cloth-backed boards, rubbed, spine defective, folio, 1874. £300 - 500 A lively account of a Suffolk farmer's son who joined as a 'boy' on a collier brig plying the east coast. Later, on 17th April 1830 Suggate joined an East Indiaman "the Lord Lowther … a fine vessel of about 1400 tons … bound for China." After having braved the ceremony of 'crossing the line' they landed in Hong Kong and then proceeded to Canton. Whilst there, an Englishwoman had come from Macao to live with her husband, something that was forbidden by the authorities and "a dispute arose between the English and Chinese and the latter immediately resorted to their old mode of annoyance, that of stopping the trade. To protect ourselves we had an armed boats crew from each English ship in the river, and also a couple of quarter deck guns from one of our vessels, which were planted one on each side of the factory gates."Suggate's journal also includes notes on the English Channel, the islands of Amsterdam and St. Paul's in the Indian Ocean, Hong Kong, Canton River ("opium is a luxury … besides it is forbidden as hurtful to the health, still an immense quantity is sold and consumed, we always knew when our little sampan boatman had been breaking the law by the look in his eyes"), the Zutphen Islands, Cape of Good Hope, Macao, Singapore, St. Helena etc.

1831 ANTIQUE PARCHMENT DEED FARM SUFFOLK.SIGNED BY BARONET. MANUSCRIPT LEGAL DOCUMENT; BEING THE RELEASE OF A FARM AND LANDS AT CRAWFORD IN THE COUNTY OF SUFFOLK. BETWEEN SIR PHILIP BOWES VERE BROKE OF NARTON IN THE COUNTY OF SUFFOLK, BARONET, FORMERLY A REAR ADMIRAL IN THE BRITISH NAVY.. and signed by him AND THE REVEREND WILLIAM ALDRICH OF IPSWICH AND OTHERS BROKE, SIR PHILIP BOWES VERE, BART. (1776-1841), 'British Rear Admiral, was born at Broke Hall, near Ipswich, on the 9th of September 1776, a member of an old Suffolk family. Entering the navy in June 1792, he saw active service in the Mediterranean from 793 to 795, and was with the British fleet at the battle of Cape St Vincent, 797. In 1798 he was present at the defeat and capture of the French squadron off the north coast of Ireland. From 1799 to ,80I he served with the North Sea fleet, and in the latter year was made captain. Unemployed for the next four years, he commanded in 1805 a frigate in the English and Irish Channels. In I8o6 he was appointed to the command of the Shannon, 38-gun frigate, remaining afloat, principally in the Bay of Biscay, till 18,1. The Shannon was then ordered to 1-lalifax, Nova Scotia. For a year after the declaration of war between Great Britain and the United States in 1812, the frigate saw no important service, though she captured several prizes. Broke utilized this period of comparative inactivity to train his men thoroughly. He paid particular attention to gunnery, and the Shannon ere long gained a unique reputation for excellence of shooting. Rear Admiral Broke had his opportunity in 1813. In May of that year the Shannon was cruising off Boston, watching the Chesapeake, an American frigate of the same nominal force but heavier armament. On the 1st of June Broke, finding his water supply getting low, wrote to Lawrence, the commander of the Chesapeake, asking for a meeting between the two ships, stating the Shannon’s force, and guaranteeing that no other British ship should take part in the engagement. Before this letter could be delivered, however, the Chesapeake, under full sail, ran out of Boston harbour, crowds of pleasure-boats accompanying her to witness the engagement. Broke briefly addressed his men. Don’t cheer, he concluded, go quietly to your quarters. I feel sure you will all do your duty. As the Chesapeake rounded to on the Shannon’s weather quarter, at a distance of about fifty yards, the British frigate received her with a broadside. One hundred of the Chesapeake’s crew were struck down at once, Lawrence himself being mortally wounded. A second broadside, equally well aimed, increased the confusion, and, her tiller-ropes being shot away, the American frigate drifted foul of the Shannon. Broke sprang on board with some sixty of his -men following him. After a brief struggle the fight was over. Within fifteen minutes of the firing of the first shot, the Chesapeake struck her flag, but Broke himself was seriously wounded. For his services he was rewarded with the title of Baronet, and subsequently was made a K.C.B'. WITH TWO ESCUTCHEONED REVENUE STAMPS - FIVE WAX SEALS - INTERESTING ITEM FOR COLLECTORS OF SOCIAL HISTORY, LOCAL HISTORY AND GENEALOGY FOR THE BROKE FAMILY GUARANTEED ORIGINAL AND IN GOOD CONDITION ON TWO FOLDED SHEETS OF PARCHEMENT SIZE 29 INCHES BY 23 INCHES

Old Documents Dated 1636, etc. Suffolk These fascinating old documents came from an estate sale here in deepest Devon, England, but relate to Suffolk. I hope that they may be of interest to someone. Some are large - over 32 inches (81cms) wide, and one has three wax seals still attached on paper 'ribbons'. I thinks some of the paper is either vellum or parchment, but I am not an expert in these things. These wonderful old documents relate to various people and places, so here is a list:

1636 Indenture, with wax seals intact with several signatures - Suffolk area

1685 Indenture, Richard Emsdon of Botesdale, Suffolk

1728 Indenture of John Cay of Botesdale, Suffolk

1771 Indenture James of Biddel of Suffolk

A packet of four various others, dated 1762 and thereabouts. Condition of these historical documents is very good. They are all readable, though the old handwriting is at times difficult. All are complete, but some have split a little at the places where they have been folded. In total, there are TEN documents here.
