LIVERPOOL/IPSWICH FAMILY ARCHIVE
General Description: This is a marvellous and large archive of 2
families one stemming from Liverpool and the other from Ipswich. The family
in Liverpool are the Chappel-Gills. They were cotton merchants, who prospered
in the mid Victorian period and became very wealthy, as this archive proves.
The family from Ipswich were the Prettys, they owned a place called Goldrood
Hall, several photos of it circa 1900-1910, which is now a school. The
archive contains masses of personal photographs almost all inscribed with names
etc, letters, some from the front from both of the first and second world
wars, and newspaper cuttings and postcards from all over the world sent back
home. The Chappel-Gills last lived in Montgomeryshire near Welshpool. There
are newspapers dating from 1820. There is a super portfolio of a marriage
held at Goldrood in the early part of the 20th century, real good photographs
etc. The name Carey features throughout the years so they are connected. This
is a unique record of a very wealthy family who flourished through the cotton
trade. There are many addresses in the archive of where the various parts of
the family lived and an amazing collection of photographs of the family on
holiday skiing in the 1900-1920 period. The family were connected with the hunting
world as there are many photographs of hunts and hounds in Montgomeryshire at
Brywnderwen, Bwlch-y-cibau. They also lived at one time at 19 Greenheys Rd,
Liverpool 8. Lot possibly includes 200 old postcards, most stamped, addressed
and dated. |
