Recently discovered during a house renovation, this is the most beautifully written young ladies workbook. The frontspiece is signed Mary Thompson Kendal, 19th September 1832 in exquisite handwriting, as is the complete book.Subject headings are : Reduction, Direct Proportion,Practise,Tare and Tret,Simple Interest,Promiscuous ?,Compound Interest,Brokerage,Commission,Insurance,Purchasing Stock,Discount,Single Fellowship and Double Fellowship.
Needless to say hours of effort have gone into this work and it really would put today's children to shame. This is truly worth owning, if only to show your own offspring how lucky they are, when complaining about their homework ! The book is in excellent condition, having marbled board covers measuring 9"x 7.5".

Please take a look at my other listing from the same premises recording the customers accounts from The White Hart Hotel, Retford between 1815 and 1840.

This was discovered along with another handwritten book also listed, during a recent house restoration. Not many items qualify as being unique but this certainly fits into that category. This ledger is a handwritten record of the customer's accounts who stayed at The White Hart Inn,Retford, Nottinghamshire between 1815 and 1840. Also within the book are several letters to the Innkeeper, William Dennett and an original invoice detailing goods and services on offer with prices.
Amongst the numerous guests names are some political representatives of the time, details of whom may be found on several websites. One in particular is a Mr Hornby who was investigated by the House of Lords in1830 after his visit to Retford, where he was accused of buying votes ! His account in this ledger is unpaid and William Dennett appeared as a witness in the enquiry and mentions this fact. This really is history coming to life !

Other accounts are for The Canal Society and Military companies of the time who clearly held functions here.Although the binding is showing it's age the content more than makes up for this and having spent hours researching the inn's visitors of almost 200 years ago, I can vouch that this is intrigueing. Discovered with the ledger were a pewter condiment pot and wine funnel and these are included in the auction as I feel they belong together.

This is a one off unique legal document dated 1897 pertaining to lands in Nottingham and Derby  owned by His Grace the Duke of Portland. This document conatins hundereds of names, to many to list! First let me tell you that I am no expert in this field, but I will do my best to describe the document as accurately as possible! Written in fancy writing the document measures 22.5" X 18", has 8 pages and is made of what I believe to be either stiff waxed paper or vellum which is semi-transparent when held against a light. I am not good at reading this style of writing, and while 100% of the writing is clearly readable I cannot decipher the words!  So bear with me and I will do my best! Words that I cannot make out I will * next to. The large writing at the top of the document "A Memorial to be registered of An Absolute Order No 236 of the Board of Agriculture...." then writing then gets smaller and there is lots & lots of it! So much detail,  people such as Arthur Charles Greville, a late Colonel in Her Majesty’s Army and & Edward Horsman* Bailey of Middlesex! This side of document has an official red two shillings and six pence stamp, which has silver metal the crown part (on the back of this page is a  black stamp with the crown and letters VR* which seems to seal in the  silver metal on to the stamp on the front). The stamp on the front  and has the crown at the top and is  size 1¾” x  1¾” approx

As to the document content, as I said I am no expert, but it appears to be concerning the land/estates of His Grace the Duke of Portland who owned a considerable amount of land in the Nottingham and Derby. These lands are detailed on all 8 pages and categorised by name of lands, Name of Landowner (The Duke throughout the document), the names of the occupiers, the name of the Parish, the name of the county and the total number of acres! This information is also summarised on the last page. Also on the last page is a table with twice yearly payments from 1898 to 1906. Totalling a massive £41,720 plus shillings and pence! Also in this section there is a column relating to repayment of a loan and interest to be charged! Confused? I am! Could the winning bidder enlighten me? The document seems to be concerning the rental of the land to others, but I am really NOT sure! It is signed by and has the red seal of “Land Loan and Enfranchisement Company 18 60”, but I can not decipher the signature!  What ever the context of the document it is original and in good condition with the exception of being very stiff, from being folded up for 108 years! There are some pencil marks on the document as to their nature again, I do not know. Page numbers have been added to the bottom left corner in pencil. Two X at the top of the first page as if to highlight areas which need reading before a signature is taken! When the document is folded up for storage the back has signatures of witnesses?

Huge family Bible printed by Russell and Allen, Deansgate, Manchester 1810. Front page as follows: The Christian's complete Family Bible being a clear, full and universal exposition and commentary on the Holy Scriptures containing the whole of the sacred texts in the Old and New Testament with the Apocypha at Large. Illustrated with valuable notes and annotations theological, critical, moral, historical, practical, chronological and explanatory .....with practical reflections and useful admonitions at the end of each chapter. From Poole, Henry, Wesley, Brown, Coke &c. The whole calculated to enlighten the understanding, purify the heart, and promote the cause of virtue and piety; and thereby establish the happiness and peace of Chrisitan families in this world and secure their eternal salvation in the next". Lovely whole page engraving illustrations .

Label inside front cover reads John and Elizabeth Lamb, Truswell, Nottinghamshire, England. Having done a little research I have found that John Lamb and Elizabeth Gardner were married in 1810 at West Markham in Nottinghamshire which is near Treswell (unable to find a Truswell so presumably the spelling has changed in the last 200 years).

Covers and first few pages are detached and condition is quite tatty. Some of the pages are rather creased and one seems to be missing with a very old note which I can't quite make out about someone having removed the following page. Would be wonderful for anybody able to restore the Bible or for anyone researching the Lamb family. Please note that this is extremely heavy and measures approximately 17" x 10" x 4".
