[Hewett family] Abstract of Title to [unstated] Property in Moreton Morland & Eagle

This undated but evidently 17th century abstract gives very brief details of land transactions ranging from 18Eliz [1576] to 19Car2 [1668]. William [described as Citizen] was the first of several Hewetts to be involved in these properties and is mentioned as acquiring the lands by conveyance in 35Eliz [1593]. Later on there is hint of a challenge that this 'conveyance' was merely a lease. Little information can be gleaned about the Hewetts, though William had two sons, John and Solomon. William also seems to have had a brother [Sir] John who somehow acquired the rights to the properties. Manuscript on paper which, as folded, became stuck together and has been holed by careless unfolding with the loss of some text. However, abstracts of this age are unusual. (ref 554/26)

[Saxilby] Bundle of Documents relating to Pasture Farm

60 documents, all paper, ranging in dates from 1822 to 1845. The collection consists mainly of letters, notes, invoices etc. Much of the paperwork preludes the sale of the farm by auction in 1844, as a result of which local draper Edward Worthington acquired this 70-odd acre farm for £3250. Tenants include Stanley, Shuttleworth, Hopkinson. There are two abstracts of title (lists of deeds), one of which gives details of transactions going back to 1721, and a poster announcing the sale to be held at the City Arms Hotel in Lincoln on 13.9.1844. The farm is described as being 'bounded by the River Foss Dyke on or towards the North, by the Broadholme Drain on or towards the East and by the road leading from Skillingthorpe to Saxilby on or towards the West'. Old English Indenture of Mortgage dated 9th July 1821 between William Hooker of West Rasen in the County of Lincoln (1) William Brodhurst of Mansfield in the County of Nottingham (2).  It is a Mortgage deed to secure £16000 with interest over property in West Ffiorsby otherwise Ffirsby and also known as Ffrisby.  This may be the old English spelling for the village of Thoresby which is 8 miles from the small town of Louth, 30 or miles from Lincoln.  This cannot be guaranteed however.  This large 2 page Indenture of Mortgage measures some 30" x 25" and weighs 144 grammes.  It has 2 original Government stamp seals on the face of each page with the original black Revenue stamps on the reverse sides.  The original signature and seal of William Hooker is near perfect as if placed on the document only yesterday.  For a document of 183 years of age, it is near perfect condition.  Only the back sheet bears some staining due to age.

Old English Indenture being a hand written Deed of Assignment dated 7th August 1818 of a lease term of 1000 years from 1809 (i.e.nearly 200 years of age)  between John Kelsey of Waddingham Lincoln ffarmer (see old English spelling) and Joseph Baldwin of Lincoln Gentleman (1) William Hooker of West Ffirsby (note old English spelling) of Lincoln Grazior (2) William Smith of West Rasen, Lincoln ffarmer (3) This old English  Deed of Indenture relates to the land in the Manor of Ffirsby alias Ffrisby and comprising part Parish of West Ffirsby Lincoln including land known as Sheep Walk upon the Heath and other land in the County of Lincoln. This 200 year old  Indenture contains 2 hand written pages in black ink and measures 31.5" x 25" and weighs 161  grammes and for its age is in incredible condition having been stored in the same Safe for well over 20 years.  The  original red seals are in perfect condition and the signatures appear to have been written a few days ago.  Both pages have Revenue stamps of £1.5s.0d. sealed onto them and they are near perfect.  On the reverse side of both the Revenue seals is the black Revenue stamps.  They are also in prime condition.  There is some minor staining on the back sheets but this does not detract from the quality of the document.  There is slight thinning on the back page on the folds but this is not detrimental.
