A very attractive and interesting Bond for
Performance of Covenance dated 2nd May 1749 during the reign of King George
II, concerning Edmund Hankinson of Esbreck in the County of Lancaster Yeoman
being firmly bound to Ann Hankinson of Kirkham in the same County Widow in
One Thousand Pounds of Good and Lawful Money of Great Britain.. Although this
document is distressed along the major folds to the degree of being in two
pieces vertically and those two pieces very nearly being in two horizontally.
However, this is justified by the fact it has been used over a period of 56
years as the receipt of payment of interest on the loan. This is a historical
document with true character displaying a detailed account in different handwriting
over more than five decades. Comprising originally of a single folded sheet
of period watermarked paper approx. 17” x 13” with all text fully legible for
transcription. Bearing a very fine and unusual single red wax seal and a
three six pence embossed revenue stamp. |

BYRON, George Gordon Noel, Lord.: Original legal
indenture recording the sale and conveyance by William, 5th Lord Byron (immediate
predecessor of the poet), of land near Rochdale in Lancashire to John Clough,
clothier, of Spotland. Signed twice by Byron and by his attorney and various
witnesses and dated 20 July 1744. Vellum deed, ca. 22" by 16",
written in a legible hand within red ruled border; folded, some yellowing and
other age marks, one small hole affecting a few letters, but generally in
very good state. With Byron's seal at foot, chipped but substantially
complete. The fifth Lord Byron, here described as 'Baron of Rochdale in the
County Palatine of Lancaster and Lord of the Manour of Rochdale aforesaid'
but commonly known as 'the Wicked Lord', earned a fearsome reputation as a
rake and spendthrift; he killed his cousin in a duel after a drunken argument
and built a folly at Newstead which was reputed to be the venue for
'unspeakable orgies'. Despite these excesses he outlived his son and
grandson, and so it was that on his death in 1798 the title and estates
passed to his ten-year-old great-nephew, the future poet. The present
document adds another piece to the jigsaw of the complex history of Byron's
inheritance: William was only twenty-two when he sold this parcel of two
acres for the sum of £2 8s., reserving to himself and 'his heirs and
assigns..the yearly rent of eight pence of lawful money' - rent which
presumably was to form part of his successor's income. By the time of his
death Wiliam was penniless, leaving not even enough for his funeral expenses,
and the entire income from his estate was swallowed by debts. Eighty years
after the date of this initial sale the poet, after years of litigation, sold
the remaining Rochdale estate for £11,225 to fund his Greek enterprise. A few
months later he was buried in the family vault, his coffin resting on the
Wicked Lord's. |

1865 ANTIQUE DEED HAWKSHEAD LANCASHIRE - NOW
CUMBRIA -.LOW START PRICE AND NO RESERVE MANUSCRIPT COPY TITLE DEED FROM THE
MANOR COURT OF HAWKSHEAD BEING ADMITTANCE OF DOROTHY HARRISON AND OTHERS FOR
RIGHT IN TRUST TO LAND AND CLOSES IN CONISTON QUARTER AND HOLME HEAD. NOTES
OF RENTS IN MARGIN HAWKSHEAD is an ancient market town, situate in the centre
of a warm and sheltered valley, at the head of Esthwaite Water, and
surrounded by the lofty Fells of Furness. "The small round-topped
verdant elevations," says Mr. Baines, "with which the country
abounds, give a softness and beauty to this part of the lake scenery, which
can scarcely be excelled." The construction of this town is very
antique, but there are no authentic records to show either its origin or the
etymology of its name. When Furness Abbey was in the zenith of its splendour,
in the middle ages of British history, a court was held here, at which the
bailiff of Hawkshead dispensed justice in the name of the abbots. The room in
which this court was held is still pointed out over the gateway of the house
called Hawkshead Hall, now occupied by a farmer, about a mile north from the
town; and here the abbot kept residence by one or more monks, who performed
divine service in the church and other places. Though several of the
old-fashioned houses still remain, yet there are many good dwellings in the
town, and some comfortable inns, especially the Red Lion, where conveyances
are always in readiness for visitants and tourists; and it is a matter of
surprise that this central and picturesque town is not more frequently
resorted to by tourists to the lake district. Mannix & Co., History,
Topography and Directory of Westmorland, 1851 IN FINE TO VERY FINE CONDITION

ELIZABETHAN INDENTURE TRIPARTITE BETWEEN THOMAS
STANDISH OF DUXBURY, LANCASHIRE, ESQUIRE EDWARD STANDISH OF STANDISH, LANCASHIRE WILLIAM FARRINGTON RICHARD CHISNALL RICHARD SHUTTLEWORTH THOMAS HOUGHTON OF BRYNFOLES NR WHELETON ALEXANDER RIGBY OF BURGH "the said Thomas Standyshe hathe marryed and
taken to wyffe Margarett the reputed daughter of Sir Richarde Houghton Knight
deceased" Dated 26 June in the 23rd year of the reign of Elizabeth I
1581 This single page document in English sets out the complex
inheritance rights to Thomas's properties of Margaret's and Thomas'
children. There are also a group of
what appears to be trustees also having an interest in the properties. Thomas Standish's properties included: The Manor of Heapey The Manor of Whytell in the Wooddes (Whittle in the
Woods) The Manor of Duxbury And all other messuages, tenements, etc, of Thomas
Standish lying and being in Duxbury, Heapey, Whittle in the Woods, Heath,
Worthington, Claughton, Longton, Croston Burrow, Standish, and Anglezark. This document will be useful to anyone with an
interest in the old Catholic families of Lancashire such as the Houghtons and
Standishes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The years 1580/81 were of significance as this was
the time of the Jesuit leader Edmund Campion's stay in Lancashire (he was
executed later on in 1581). It is
interesting to speculate that documents like this indenture were created to
make it difficult for Elizabeth I to confiscate lands from known catholic
families such as the Standishes. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Standish family had held a share in the manor
of Heapey since 1300. Part share of the manor of Whittle le Woods was
granted to Gilbert de Witul in the reign of Henry I, who subsequently passed
it onto Richard le Butler, and through his ancestor John Butler de Rawclif,
into the hands of the Standish & Anderton families. The Anderton family
transferred their portion of the manor to Mr. William Crooke. The other portion moiety described as Whythall in
the wood, was passed from Warin Bussel through Richard Fitton, onto the Lee
family, and subsequently to Sir Richard Hoghton through his marriage to
Sibil, daughter of Sir Henry Lee. The Houghton and Standish families have been
associated with William Shakespeare (reference the recent Michael Wood BBC
series on Shakespeare). One of the
family members at the time, Alexander Hoghton, wrote his will in August 1581
naming William Shakeshafte (taken to be Shakespeare by some historians). Members of the family were also friends of
Dowager Countess Alice, widow of Ferdinando, 5th Earl of Derby, who, as Lord
and Lady Strange in the early 1590s, were patrons of Strange's Players, who
performed some of Shakespeare's early plays.
Handwritten in English. Creasing, dust marking and some faint text in areas
around the folds. Signatures of all parties with vellum seal
tags. Only one still retains the
intact wax seal. |

Indenture recording the settlement by Thomas
Standish after his marriage with Margaret Houghton, between THOMAS STANDISH
OF DUXBURY, LANCASHIRE, ESQUIRE, and EDWARD STANDISH OF STANDISH,
LANCASHIRE. Dated 20th October 1579 in
the 21st year of the reign of Elizabeth I "the said Thomas Standyshe
hathe marryed and taken to wyffe Margarett the reputed daughter of Sir
Richarde Houghton Knight deceased" This two page document in English and
Latin sets out the complex inheritance rights to Thomas's properties of
Margaret's and Thomas' children. There
are also a group of what appears to be trustees also having an interest in
the properties.
This document will be useful to anyone with an
interest in the old Catholic families of Lancashire such as the Houghtons and
Standishes. Document has extensive creasing and some tears, but all text is
readable. _______________________________________ The Standish family had held a share in the manor
of Heapey since 1300. Part share of
the manor of Whittle le Woods was granted to Gilbert de Witul in the reign of
Henry I, who subsequently passed it onto Richard le Butler, and through his
ancestor John Butler de Rawclif, into the hands of the Standish &
Anderton families. The Anderton family transferred their portion of the manor
to Mr. William Crooke. The other portion moiety described as Whythall in the
wood, was passed from Warin Bussel through Richard Fitton, onto the Lee
family, and subsequently to Sir Richard Hoghton through his marriage to
Sibil, daughter of Sir Henry Lee. _______________________________________ The Houghton and Standish families have been
associated with William Shakespeare (reference the recent Michael Wood BBC
series on Shakespeare). One of the
family members at the time, Alexander Hoghton, wrote his will in August 1581
naming William Shakeshafte (taken to be Shakespeare by some historians). Members of the family were also friends of
Dowager Countess Alice, widow of Ferdinando, 5th Earl of Derby, who, as Lord
and Lady Strange in the early 1590s, were patrons of Strange's Players, who performed
some of Shakespeare's early plays. _______________________________________ |
