Two large hand written legal documents on parchment measuring over 28"x24" (72x61cms) dated 1814 and 1853. One is 2 sheets of hand written parchment tied and sealed together, while the other consists of 5 sheets, all the same size, all covered with hand written script, again tied and sealed together. The earlier document is signed by James and John Beswick of Thurston Hough in Saddleworth in the County of Lancaster and is concerned with properties in that area. The second document which comprises 5 full sheets, is between Thomas Bury of the 'Adlephi' in Salford and Henry Radcliffe of Oldham. It appears to be concerned with property in Salford. Both documents are complete with the original wax seals to the bottom edges together with the official Government tax seals and handstamps. They are in very good robust condition with the inner sides almost as good as new. They have been folded in the usual manner and stored and thus the outsides are a little grubby but they are not damaged.

Two handwritten wills dated 1728 and 1776 respectively. Both handwritten in ink on large sheets of handmade, watermarked paper measuring 15.5"x10" (39x25cms). The first dated 2nd January 1728 is the last will and testament of Richard Ward yeoman of Goosnargh in the county of Lancaster. The will is on 2 sheets of paper which are sealed together with impressed and hand stamped government tax marks applied. The script begins "In the name of God Amen" and goes on to leave his property to his wife providing that she does not remarry. The second dated 9th September 1776 is the will of Henry Howarth weaver of Stalmine in the county of Lancaster. Written in three sheets which are sealed together, again with government tax stamps applied. This is a more involved affair with beqests mostly to his wife Mary and daughters, "unto my daughter Rebecca one feather bed with bedding and bedstocks..." The script is written in the old English manner but with patience it can be deciphered and understood and gives a fascinating insight into life over 200 years ago. The wills are in generally very good condition but they have been stored folded and the exposed parts are a little discoloured and grubby. One has a couple of small tears along one fold.

1820-1950 LIVERPOOL/IPSWICH FAMILY ARCHIVE  General Description: This is a marvellous and large archive of 2 families one stemming from Liverpool and the other from Ipswich. The family in Liverpool are the Chappel-Gills. They were cotton merchants, who prospered in the mid Victorian period and became very wealthy, as this archive proves. The family from Ipswich were the Prettys, they owned a place called Goldrood Hall, several photos of it circa 1900-1910, which is now a school. The archive contains masses of personal photographs almost all inscribed with names etc, letters, some from the front from both of the first and second world wars, and newspaper cuttings and postcards from all over the world sent back home. The Chappel-Gills last lived in Montgomeryshire near Welshpool. There are newspapers dating from 1820. There is a super portfolio of a marriage held at Goldrood in the early part of the 20th century, real good photographs etc. The name Carey features throughout the years so they are connected. This is a unique record of a very wealthy family who flourished through the cotton trade. There are many addresses in the archive of where the various parts of the family lived and an amazing collection of photographs of the family on holiday skiing in the 1900-1920 period. The family were connected with the hunting world as there are many photographs of hunts and hounds in Montgomeryshire at Brywnderwen, Bwlch-y-cibau. They also lived at one time at 19 Greenheys Rd, Liverpool 8. Lot possibly includes 200 old postcards, most stamped, addressed and dated.

Two handwritten documents on hand made laid paper, both legally endorsed and signed copies of the last will and testaments of gentlemen from the County of Lancaster. The first one, a folded large sheet written on two sides, dated 4th December 1789 is the last will and testament of one John Rushton, Wine Merchant. He bequeathed his granddaughter £500 (a huge sum of money in those days), the sheet has an official government tax hand stamp applied. The second (written in 1790)is a more substantial affair on six sides, giving details of the last will and testament of 'Corna' Woodhouse. It begins "In the name of God Amen, I Cona Woodhouse of Stalmine with Stanall in the County of Lancaster, Yeoman, being in a poor state of health but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding praised be God ..." It goes on to list many bequests to his family, details and lists of considerable properties and farmlands and money. Both documents are in very good condition but they have been stored folded and the outside parts are a little discoloured and grubby but the main body of the sheets are as good as the day they were written. The paper is quite robust and can be safely handled.

It has an extended pocket stiched into it with ribbon on the bottom of the first page that holds the other 6 pages. The words are all in English and extremely well written and legible Each sheet has a blue Revenue seal with a silver escutcheon attached to it and on the reverse is the normal paper seal with the mark of the monarch on - in this case GeorgeIV. The back of the first sheet of vellum has all the undersigns and a receipt for £100. This really is super piece of history that would form a fantastic set of mounted and framed works. A most interesting English vellum deed dated 1850 along with several related papers pertaining to what appears to be a foreclosure on a fine dwelling on Holme Island in the Palantine of Lancaster. To further add to the intrigue is several references to a stash of wine held by the debtor in his house on Holme Island and in the posession of Joshua Penny and Company. Wine Merchants of London. Some of the papers are of the Wine Merchant. The deed is between John Thompson who appears to be the debtor who currently resides in Calais France, an Esquire, of the first part; and William Feetham Miller of Middlesex, an Ironmonger, and William Shaw, a Gentleman, both of the second part. Five vellum leaves with five blue revenues and tax stamps, and three red wax seals on green cloth tags. An addendum is penned on the verso of one leaf with stamps and seal. Approx 35 papers, mostly receipts, not examined still with old pink cloth tie. Very Good, some mild creasing, measures 27 x 21".

INDENTURE RECORDING A LEASE BETWEEN: SIR ROGER BRADSHAIGH OF HAIGH IN THE COUNTY OF LANCASTER, KNIGHT AND BARONET, SIR PETER BROOKE OF ASTLEY, KNIGHT, HENRY HOUGHTON OF BRINSTOE, ESQUIRE, RICHARD ATHERTON OF ATHERTON, ESQUIRE, WILLIAM DANIELL OF WIGAN, ESQUIRE, THOMAS WILSON OF TUNSEY, GENTLEMAN, HOWARD STANDISH OF STANDISH, ESQUIRE, AND WILLIAM STANDISH SON AND HEIR APPARENT OF THE SAID HOWARD STANDISH OF THE ONE PART AND JOHN BALDWIN OF WIGAN OF THE OTHER PART.

The document relates to the sale (by lease & release) of the estates of Howard Stadish to pay his debts, particularly the sale of a messuage in the Parish of Duxbury, Lancashire, commonly known as Antezargh in the occupation of James Antezargh. This is a very fine example of a 17th century indenture with lovely calligraphy, and 8 signatures and large seal tags (5 still with red wax seals intact).  Very good signatures of Sir Roger Bradshaigh and Sir Peter Brooke. Sir Roger Bradshaigh of Haigh, Knight, was created a baronet in the same year, 1679, having been brought up and educated by James the seventh Earl of Derby, Who, according to Dr. Wroe, the eloquent warden of Manchester, was the "instrument in reclaiming him from the errors of the Church of Rome."  Sir Roger was a member of the old Lancashire family of Bradshaw.  During the reign of Edward III, one of Sir Roger's ancesters, Sir William Bradshaw, made an alteration in the spelling of his name, namely, from Bradshaw to Bradshaigh. Sir Roger Bradshaw was a Member of Parliament and also the High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1679. Sir Peter Brooke, Baronet, owned Astley Hall near Chorley, from 1653, and became High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1674. Very good condition vellum handwritten in English. 30 by 60 cm.

This is a hand-written draft indenture dated 3rd October 1868 between Mary Ann Fox (formerly Dodd - at least I think it's "formerly" she might be becoming a Dodd) of Charlton in Medlock, Manchester and James Elvey of the Isle of Thanet; Thomas Hodges of Ramsgate. Also mentions Robert Godfrey Fox as "murdered"! It is difficult to read the hand writing in places, but seems to be quite interesting. The document covers 4 sides (2 sheets of paper - 16" x 10" approx) with a 3rd giving solicitors and signature details.
