Two handwritten wills dated 1728 and 1776 respectively.
Both handwritten in ink on large sheets of handmade, watermarked paper
measuring 15.5"x10" (39x25cms). The first dated 2nd January 1728 is
the last will and testament of Richard Ward yeoman of Goosnargh in the county
of Lancaster. The will is on 2 sheets of paper which are sealed together with
impressed and hand stamped government tax marks applied. The script begins
"In the name of God Amen" and goes on to leave his property to his
wife providing that she does not remarry. The second dated 9th September 1776
is the will of Henry Howarth weaver of Stalmine in the county of Lancaster.
Written in three sheets which are sealed together, again with government tax
stamps applied. This is a more involved affair with beqests mostly to his
wife Mary and daughters, "unto my daughter Rebecca one feather bed with
bedding and bedstocks..." The script is written in the old English
manner but with patience it can be deciphered and understood and gives a
fascinating insight into life over 200 years ago. The wills are in generally
very good condition but they have been stored folded and the exposed parts
are a little discoloured and grubby. One has a couple of small tears along
one fold. |

Two handwritten documents on hand made laid paper, both
legally endorsed and signed copies of the last will and testaments of
gentlemen from the County of Lancaster. The first one, a folded large sheet
written on two sides, dated 4th December 1789 is the last will and testament
of one John Rushton, Wine Merchant. He bequeathed his granddaughter £500 (a
huge sum of money in those days), the sheet has an official government tax
hand stamp applied. The second (written in 1790)is a more substantial affair
on six sides, giving details of the last will and testament of 'Corna'
Woodhouse. It begins "In the name of God Amen, I Cona Woodhouse of
Stalmine with Stanall in the County of Lancaster, Yeoman, being in a poor
state of health but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding
praised be God ..." It goes on to list many bequests to his family,
details and lists of considerable properties and farmlands and money. Both
documents are in very good condition but they have been stored folded and the
outside parts are a little discoloured and grubby but the main body of the
sheets are as good as the day they were written. The paper is quite robust
and can be safely handled. |

A most interesting English vellum deed dated 1850

foreclosure on a fine dwelling on Holme Island in the Palantine of Lancaster.
To further add to the intrigue is several references to a stash of wine held
by the debtor in his house on Holme Island and in the posession of Joshua
Penny and Company. Wine Merchants of London. Some of the papers are of the

William Feetham Miller of Middlesex, an Ironmonger, and William Shaw, a
Gentleman, both of the second part. Five vellum leaves with five blue

INDENTURE RECORDING A LEASE BETWEEN: SIR ROGER
BRADSHAIGH OF HAIGH IN THE COUNTY OF LANCASTER, KNIGHT AND BARONET, SIR PETER
BROOKE OF ASTLEY, KNIGHT, HENRY HOUGHTON OF BRINSTOE, ESQUIRE, RICHARD ATHERTON
OF ATHERTON, ESQUIRE, WILLIAM DANIELL OF WIGAN, ESQUIRE, THOMAS WILSON OF
TUNSEY, GENTLEMAN, HOWARD STANDISH OF STANDISH, ESQUIRE, AND WILLIAM STANDISH
SON AND HEIR APPARENT OF THE SAID HOWARD STANDISH OF THE ONE PART AND JOHN
BALDWIN OF WIGAN OF THE OTHER PART. The document relates to the sale (by lease &
release) of the estates of Howard Stadish to pay his debts, particularly the
sale of a messuage in the Parish of Duxbury, Lancashire, commonly known as
Antezargh in the occupation of James Antezargh. This is a very fine example
of a 17th century indenture with lovely calligraphy, and 8 signatures and
large seal tags (5 still with red wax seals intact). Very good signatures of Sir Roger
Bradshaigh and Sir Peter Brooke. Sir Roger Bradshaigh of Haigh, Knight, was
created a baronet in the same year, 1679, having been brought up and educated
by James the seventh Earl of Derby, Who, according to Dr. Wroe, the eloquent
warden of Manchester, was the "instrument in reclaiming him from the
errors of the Church of Rome."
Sir Roger was a member of the old Lancashire family of Bradshaw. During the reign of Edward III, one of Sir
Roger's ancesters, Sir William Bradshaw, made an alteration in the spelling
of his name, namely, from Bradshaw to Bradshaigh. Sir Roger Bradshaw was a
Member of Parliament and also the High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1679. Sir
Peter Brooke, Baronet, owned Astley Hall near Chorley, from 1653, and became
High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1674. Very good condition vellum handwritten in

Also mentions Robert Godfrey Fox as "murdered"! It is difficult to
read the hand writing in places, but seems to be quite interesting. The
document covers 4 sides (2 sheets of paper - 16" x 10" approx) with
a 3rd giving solicitors and signature details. |
