English vellum indenture dated 1796 during the reign of George III of Author
and Designer Richard Payne Knight, of Downton Castle in Hereford. The
indenture conveys a dwelling and property in radnor from Knight to Aaron
Rogers, a Farmer. Knight signs the document next to a red wax seal. More
information and Richard payne Knight is contained at the end of this
description. Two blue revenue stamps with insert, tax stamp, and red wax seal
on green cloth tag. Fine condition, measures 30 x 21". Richard Payne Knight
(1750-1824) was a connoisseur, author and owner/designer of Downton Castle,
between 1774 and 1778. Pevsner, in the Art Bulletin for December 1949, traces
the origins of the Downton design to Vanburgh Castle and Strawberry Hill.
Richard Payne Knight was the grandson of an ironmaster and the son of a
clergyman. Pevsner believed he was more interested in sexual symbolism than
anything else. This interest is revealed in Knight's book on The Worship of
Priapus. Knight wrote a Poem, The Landscape (1794) in which he mocked the
'smooth' style of Lancelot Brown. This led to the 'picturesque controversy'
between Knight, Price and Repton. Richard Payne Knight designed a castellated
mansion with a picturesque garden at Downton. The architectural style was
'mixed', just as Humphry Repton was later to propose a 'mixed' approach to
garden design. |

Kingsland. Other names noted are Thomas Nash, John Parker, Thomas Kington and
Ebenezer Moulson. The revenue stamp, usually blue, is a pale pink which may
be due to fading. There is also an excellent red wax seal with a good
impression of a man's head in profile. UNUSUAL DEED OF EXCHANGE Size. The
document is approx. 22" wide x 16" high. Condition. Some age
browning covers parts of the document and some words along one vertical fold
are, as a result, indistinct but otherwise generally in good condition with
the usual folding creases. |

This is

but also includes a reference to John Kyrle (The Man of Ross). Quite what the
relevance of John Kyrle is to the indenture I haven't made out. 24 x 17"
approx. There is a hole in the centre of the document which doesn't really
affect the text, otherwise in pretty good condition for it's age. The text
side of the document is clean and readable while the outer side is browned
with age. |
