Handwritten English vellum indenture dated 1796 during the reign of George III of Author and Designer Richard Payne Knight, of Downton Castle in Hereford. The indenture conveys a dwelling and property in radnor from Knight to Aaron Rogers, a Farmer. Knight signs the document next to a red wax seal. More information and Richard payne Knight is contained at the end of this description. Two blue revenue stamps with insert, tax stamp, and red wax seal on green cloth tag. Fine condition, measures 30 x 21". Richard Payne Knight (1750-1824) was a connoisseur, author and owner/designer of Downton Castle, between 1774 and 1778. Pevsner, in the Art Bulletin for December 1949, traces the origins of the Downton design to Vanburgh Castle and Strawberry Hill. Richard Payne Knight was the grandson of an ironmaster and the son of a clergyman. Pevsner believed he was more interested in sexual symbolism than anything else. This interest is revealed in Knight's book on The Worship of Priapus. Knight wrote a Poem, The Landscape (1794) in which he mocked the 'smooth' style of Lancelot Brown. This led to the 'picturesque controversy' between Knight, Price and Repton. Richard Payne Knight designed a castellated mansion with a picturesque garden at Downton. The architectural style was 'mixed', just as Humphry Repton was later to propose a 'mixed' approach to garden design.

1745 VELLUM DEED SIGNED BY a VISCOUNT NO RESERVE This is an entirely handwritten vellum indenture dated 25th January 1745 in the reign of King George II and is between the Right Honourable John Lord Viscount Bateman of the Kingdom of Ireland who was "Eldest Son and Heir of the Right Honourable William Lord Viscount Bateman ... Knight of the Honourable Order of the Bath who was Eldest Son and Heir of Sir James Bateman Knight, late Lord Mayor of the City of London..." and Samuel Smith of Kingsland in the county of Hereford, a weaver. Other names noted are Robert Chaplin and John Smith. The deed concerns property in Kingsland which is to be let for a rent of 40 shillings each year "and also a Couple of good fat pullets" on the first of January every year. There is one excellent red wax seal by the signature "Bateman". An interesting document signed by a Viscount, referring to a Lord Mayor of London and requiring the payment of an unusual rent! Size. The document is approx. 27" wide x 20" high. Condition. A small tear in the top left margin and some age browning but otherwise in excellent condition with the usual folding creases.

This is a vellum indenture dated 1715 between Rowland Barnes and John Barnes of Much Marcle in Herefordshire and relating to land and property in and around Much Marcle. The name of Richard Gammond occurs. The document is not easy to read but also includes a reference to John Kyrle (The Man of Ross). Quite what the relevance of John Kyrle is to the indenture I haven't made out. 24 x 17" approx. There is a hole in the centre of the document which doesn't really affect the text, otherwise in pretty good condition for it's age. The text side of the document is clean and readable while the outer side is browned with age.
