Turnpike Road. Extensive archive of documents and
ephemera relating to the Ledbury Turnpike Road, Herefordshire, comprising
tradesmans bills, for raising stone for the road, its repair and maintenance,
Bills to Parliament concerning the road, notices to gatekeepers, rates of
tolls, balance sheets, letters and notices from and to the Trustees, a map of
part of the route, printed Acts of Parliament, printed auction advertisements
for the sale of the various goods and chattels of the road in 1871 and many
many more, all cont. in a metal trunk One of the most important and
comprehensive archives for a turnpike road to be offered in recent years.
These unique papers and documents provide the entire history of the road,
from its concept in 1784 to 1871 when the toll houses were demolished and the
toll gates, posts and rails were sold as this, along with all turnpikes, were
overtaken by a national road concept maintained at taxpayers expense rather
than by tolls. The Ledbury Turnpike continues to survive as an identifiable
route . It is now the A438 from |

Remarkable
and extensive vellum indenture dated 1801, regarding the manors of Ross (on
Wye) and Weobley, Herefordshire, an enormous document of 21 large leaves of
vellum signed and sealed (amongst others) by the Marquis of Bath and his
family, the Duke of Leeds, the Earl of Chesterfield, the Earl of Aylesford,
Lady Anne Cecil, Lord Carteret, Earl Bathurst, two schedules containing a
considerable amount of detail regarding land ownership, tenants and their
holdings etc, outer leaf with usual dusting, but inner leaves in mint
condition. A remarkable assemblage of leading figures at George III's court.
This document will yield much important new information on the population of
two important areas of Herefordshire at the beginnings of the 19th c. |

Herefordshire/Worcestershire. Carton containing
approximately seventy vellum documents 18th and 19th c., relating to manors in
the Herefordshire/Worcestershire border areas including Woolhope, Bosbury,
Colwall, Coddington, Longdon Court, Hope Mansell, Barton Colwall and Claines,
many with manuscript plans in pen with colour wash, together with an
extremely interesting 4to manuscript 'Memorandum Book' of 1814 detailing work
to be carried out on a day by day basis, presumably on one of the estates.
The memorandum book appears to have been kept by an administrator of one of
the estates and contains a wealth of information on the day to day activities
of running such a manor at the beginning of the 19th c. |

Royal Letters
Patent in latin of James I, on vellum, granting Manors in Herefordshire,
1623, featuring pen and plumbago portrait of the King holding an orb and
sceptre, within an elaborate inital 'J' and extensive elaborate pen and
plumbago decoration to top margin, lacking seal. Two separate pieces of
vellum, 21x29ins and 10x29ins respectively, both affected by staining and
some cockling in places, but the document remains entirely legible throughout
and the vellum remains strong and sound, with full translation. Rare. This is
a highly unusual patent in that it divides up the manors on the one hand into
copyhold and leasehold land and on the other the demesnes with the manor
houses and the manorial rights. The manors in question lie to the north and
west of Leominster, and the two families involved in this settlement are the
Crofts (of Croft Castle, now a National Trust Property lying betwen
Leominster and Ludlow) and the Harleys of Brampton Bryan and Wigmore Castle.
All of the villages mentioned on this document are surviving communities
today, including Leinthall Earles, Yarpole, Luston, Kingsland, Orleton and
Aston. |

A scarce local history document, providing considerable information on the
enclosure of land in the Ledbury area during the latter days of the reign of
George III. |

Two vellum indentures dated October 16th and December 23rd,
1758, granting a charitable trust for helping the poor children of Ledbury, Herefordshire,
both written in a fine legible chancery hand, signed and sealed by all
parties. The first document is a bargain and sale from Robert Biddulph to
Michael Biddulph and others as Trustees of Charitable Life and the second is
a similar document from Mr and Mrs Skynner. They detail provision of funds
for the good of poor children, and for the appointment of an honest and able
school master to teach eight of the twenty-four poor children of Ledbury -
who should only be male. There is also the buying and distribution of shifts
for the poor etc. |

Commissioner of the Poor Law and requiring the sale of properties in the
Parish of Mathon near Ledbury, Herefordshire, 4pp, folio, dated March 2nd
1837, in excellent condition and with wafered seal, stamped 'office copy',
together with a printed document dated 1886 relating to the Poor Laws A
document of considerable interest, it orders the sale of 8 properties to
raise money for the administration of the workhouse. Presumably these were
the properties seized from people who could no longer pay their way in life
and were summarily thrown into the workhouse. |

VELLUM DECLARATION of identity by HEMMINGS of LUDLOW with schedule and PLAN.
This lot consists of 2 items. The first is a vellum "Declaration of Identity"
by Richard Hemmings who states his knowledge of the property described in 2
schedules on the vellum sheet. It is dated 10th June 1852. The second is a
plan, slightly smaller than the vellum, drawn in great detail on thinnish
special paper of all the property described in the schedules. The property
concerned is Showers Farm in the parish of Kingsland, Hereford. Some of the
references in the plan are very interesting. There are at least 2 pieces of
the property marked "Queen Anne's Bounty" and also Watling Street,
the Roman road, is shown on the plan. Ownership of most of the parts of the
area is noted, including Lord Bateman, and this plan could possibly yield
much useful information about distribution of property and ownership of it at
that date. Size. The document size is approx. 31" wide x 27" high.
Condition. The vellum is in excellent condition with the usual folding
creases but the plan is missing a very small, marginal area in the top left
corner and also has the usual folding creases as it was included inside the
folded vellum. |

VELLUM DEED. EASTHAMPTON HEREFORD & PLAN. This vellum indenture is dated
14th July 1856 and is between George Davies of Easthampton in Hereford, a
carpenter and Elizabeth his wife (nιe Watkins) of the first part, John
Ruberry, a mason and Milbrow his wife (nιe Watkins also) of the second part
and Samuel Sampson of Leominster, Hereford, a Law Stationer of the third
part. It is written in an excellent, very readable script. The transaction is
stated in the filing notes to be a "Deed of Partition" and it would
appear that an area of land which was jointly owned by the two wives (under their
father's will) is being split into two so that each of the two families can
deal with a separate section of the property. There is an excellent small
plan, hand coloured, of the property on the verso which was drawn by F.
Harris of Leominster. There are also witnesses' signatures, a receipt and a
declaration. There are 5 red wax seals by the five signatures, each seal
having an impression of a letter H and there is also a blue revenue stamp for
one pound fifteen shillings. Size. The document size is approx. 28" wide
x 23" high. Condition. In excellent condition with the usual folding
creases. From the image - mentions land in the occupation of Robert Mason;
the parish of Shobdon; land in the occupation of James Watkins; land in the
occupation of John Hopton. |

involves a house which is coloured pink on the plan included in the document
and seems to be on the road between Presteign and Mortimer's Cross almost
next door to Shobdon School. There are 4 red wax seals and a blue revenue
