Turnpike Road. Extensive archive of documents and
ephemera relating to the Ledbury Turnpike Road, Herefordshire, comprising
tradesmans bills, for raising stone for the road, its repair and maintenance,
Bills to Parliament concerning the road, notices to gatekeepers, rates of
tolls, balance sheets, letters and notices from and to the Trustees, a map of
part of the route, printed Acts of Parliament, printed auction advertisements
for the sale of the various goods and chattels of the road in 1871 and many
many more, all cont. in a metal trunk One of the most important and
comprehensive archives for a turnpike road to be offered in recent years.
These unique papers and documents provide the entire history of the road,
from its concept in 1784 to 1871 when the toll houses were demolished and the
toll gates, posts and rails were sold as this, along with all turnpikes, were
overtaken by a national road concept maintained at taxpayers expense rather
than by tolls. The Ledbury Turnpike continues to survive as an identifiable
route . It is now the A438 from |

Remarkable
and extensive vellum indenture dated 1801, regarding the manors of Ross (on
Wye) and Weobley, Herefordshire, an enormous document of 21 large leaves of
vellum signed and sealed (amongst others) by the Marquis of Bath and his
family, the Duke of Leeds, the Earl of Chesterfield, the Earl of Aylesford,
Lady Anne Cecil, Lord Carteret, Earl Bathurst, two schedules containing a
considerable amount of detail regarding land ownership, tenants and their
holdings etc, outer leaf with usual dusting, but inner leaves in mint
condition. A remarkable assemblage of leading figures at George III's court.
This document will yield much important new information on the population of
two important areas of Herefordshire at the beginnings of the 19th c. |

Herefordshire/Worcestershire. Carton containing
approximately seventy vellum documents 18th and 19th c., relating to manors in
the Herefordshire/Worcestershire border areas including Woolhope, Bosbury,
Colwall, Coddington, Longdon Court, Hope Mansell, Barton Colwall and Claines,
many with manuscript plans in pen with colour wash, together with an
extremely interesting 4to manuscript 'Memorandum Book' of 1814 detailing work
to be carried out on a day by day basis, presumably on one of the estates.
The memorandum book appears to have been kept by an administrator of one of
the estates and contains a wealth of information on the day to day activities
of running such a manor at the beginning of the 19th c. |

Royal Letters
Patent in latin of James I, on vellum, granting Manors in Herefordshire,
1623, featuring pen and plumbago portrait of the King holding an orb and
sceptre, within an elaborate inital 'J' and extensive elaborate pen and
plumbago decoration to top margin, lacking seal. Two separate pieces of
vellum, 21x29ins and 10x29ins respectively, both affected by staining and
some cockling in places, but the document remains entirely legible throughout
and the vellum remains strong and sound, with full translation. Rare. This is
a highly unusual patent in that it divides up the manors on the one hand into
copyhold and leasehold land and on the other the demesnes with the manor
houses and the manorial rights. The manors in question lie to the north and
west of Leominster, and the two families involved in this settlement are the
Crofts (of Croft Castle, now a National Trust Property lying betwen
Leominster and Ludlow) and the Harleys of Brampton Bryan and Wigmore Castle.
All of the villages mentioned on this document are surviving communities
today, including Leinthall Earles, Yarpole, Luston, Kingsland, Orleton and
Aston. |
