today), good hind quarters and high set tail heads. Salisbury rented the
shootings on Rum to John Bullough. Bullough bought Rum in 1888, by which time

Hello
this auction is for one Indenture and seven letters relating to the
indenture dated 1867. The letters are all dated before the indenture, they are
all written to the solicitor and some seam to relate to a disagreement
between the two men in the indenture, the other letters seam to be from
people demanding money from one of the men. We can’t be certain of this as
all of the letters and the indenture are written in old English and
calligraphy so it is difficult to decipher the words. The indenture is
entitled ‘Release and Indemnity’ dated 1867. ‘Between Barton John Wheeler of Aldermore Lodge Old
Shirley Southampton Yeoman and William Halcher Barton of Chale Abbey Farm in
the Isle of Wight Esquire…’ It has two pages and one red seal signed by
Barton John Wheeler. When folded it measures approx 9 x10 inches and when
open to full size it measures approx 23 x29 inches. There are also two blue
pieces of paper attached to the document one has ‘one pound fifteen
shillings’ the other has ‘ten shillings’ written on them. At the back of the
paper where they are attached they have a small piece of paper glued over
them with a royal emblem and the letters VR. All indentures are in totally
solid, un-torn condition, when folded exteriors are aged, but good quality
indentures and when opened very bright and clear, please see pics |

Two
fragments of parchment which are separate legal agreements recorded before
the High Court of York and Lancaster during the later part of the eighteenth
century. The large one dated 1780 is an agreement between John Marshall and
Abraham Chamberlain and Ann his wife. The other dated 1776 is between James
Heatly and one Thomas Coupe and is concerning land and meadows together with
farm buildings. The documents are hand written in ink on parchment or vellum
in the old English style and are quite difficult to read but with patience
can be deciphered. One begins "This is the Final Agreement made in the
Court of the Lord the King at Lancaster on Saturday the seventeenth day of
August in the sixteenth year of the reign of our sovereign Lord Geoge the
Third by the Grace of God of Great Britain, France and Ireland, King defender
of the faith" and goes on to detail the agreement. They measure
17"x8" (44x21cms) and 14.5"x9" (37x23cms) respectively
and are both in very good original condition with no damage. However both have
been folded and are somewhat discoloured with age. They are very robust and
can be handled with confidence. From the images, one of the documents refers
to property on the 'Common of Turbary', which is near Bournemouth, previously
in Hampshire but now in Dorset. Other names mentioned include Sir William
Henry Ashurst, [Kings?} Bench, also Robert Parker, Thomas Langtree who, with
Heatly, were the Deforceants in the case. Appears to establish some rights
over the land for Robert. |

Heathcotes
of Hursley, Hants. Large and interesting archive of papers relating to the Heathcote
family and Hursley Park, 18th/20th c., incl. letter copy book of William
Heathcote (1730-36), various scrap albums with engravings, cuttings, recipes,
etc., late 19th and early 20th c. photo albums, etc., together with misc.
books and some modern neatly typed genealogies and family history notes
relating to the Heathcotes and Hursley Park. Hursley Park together with the
Manor and Castle of Merdon had belonged since 1660 to the Cromwell family,
having come to "Tumble down Dick", Richard Cromwell, eldest son of
Oliver. When his two surviving daughters, Elizabeth Cromwell and Ann, came
into the estate, they sold it to William Heatchote. Sir William built a red
brick, Queen Anne style mansion on the site of a Tudor house in Hursley Park,
a former hunting lodge, and started a Hursley dynasty that lasted until 1888.
The earliest item in this archive is William's letter copy book from the
1730s, some twenty years after he took possession of the estate. |

Abstract of Title to a Farm & other property This undated but probably late
18th century abstract lists property transactions - and the parties involved
- spanning the period 44Eliz [ie 1601] at which time the farm was known as
Knoll Hill Farm, to 1746. Very much to do with the Knight family until the
1720s when it was bought by Richard Higham who in turn left it to John Abery.
For the majority of the period covered by this abstract the owners were in
the Reading area of Berkshire though the occupiers were locals [esp the
Bartholemew family]. Manuscript on 7 large paper sheets. (ref 99/205) |

- Deeds to Properties in High Street & South Street These 10 appear to be
all that have survived from an original sequence of at least 22 property
deeds spanning the period 1768-1840.
The 1840 document refers to a house on the South side of the High
Street with coachhouse and stable (formerly a carpenter's shop) and a yard
& garden extending into South Street, also a house adjoining, also three
further adjoining houses, plus a couple of cottages/houses on the West side
of South Street. Brief pencillings on
the fronts of some of the documents indicate the documents concern no's 1-5
High Street - the South Street properties are unidentified but presumably
were/are near the corner with High Street.
All 10 deeds are in manuscript on parchment (some of them quite
lengthy multi-page documents) and cannot be broken up. The collection (ref 4705) |
